@@bookcafepodcast I did a paper 40 years ago on the image of Quebec and French Canada in picture books for the English-Canadian market. It was the same depiction: no modern French-Canadians doing modern things, no lawyers, no doctors, no truck drivers, no bus drivers, just people driving horse-drawn sleighs through snowy streets or baking bread in outdoor ovens, or exploring the wild spaces in Canada. That's changed today, of course, with so many kids in Early French Immersion or French first language schools where they learn from French-Canadian teachers and use French-Canadian trade books, although I gather that there's a lack of French-Canadian media in these classrooms as our schools starve EFI and even, probably, French first language schools. If Canadians can emerge from 2 solitudes so can the people of the former British protectorate of Palestine. It's too bad the colonial power, the U.K. didn't charter a better course back in 1917, right? Strangely, the Canadian national motto is "ad mare usque ad mare" (from sea to sea). How different is that from "From the river to the sea"?
Yes, you're right. What the British did in Palestine is in stark contrast to what they did in India, i.e. they took the trouble to sit multiple times between both Jinnah and Nehru. I'm astounded as to how Palestine was botched given that they did a comparatively better job with India. I even raised this point with Prof. Dr. Ilan Pappé. Regrettably, he was not so familiar with the partition of India. And I think this is where the gap is. Palestine scholars need to study the partition of India to get a better idea of what *should* have happened. -Omar
@@bookcafepodcast The sub-continent of India being handed over by the British to Indians and Pakastanis (sp?) is not really comparable because the population is so much larger in the Indian sub-continent. I would compare it to the making of what is now Newfoundland and Labrador into a Canadian province. The population is smaller--1/2 million and the territory larger, but in 1948, there were 2 referenda to see whether Newfoundland and Labrador wanted to join Canada, stay as a colony of the U.K. or become a separate Dominion once again or, possibly, join the U.S., although Newfoundlanders never voted on that idea. In the case of the British protectorate of Palestine, no referenda were held. The Jews of Europe just marched in and the Arab Palestinians were pushed out. Brutal.

In the 90s "transfer" was spoken of on the news on a daily basis, "to make Israeli lives easier". And Blue Box and Tantura (x400 Palestinian villages), Israeli movies, clearly show "transfer" was in the original documents planning Israel from Europe well before 1947.

@@bookcafepodcast Yeah, I heard. I was informing as to what I heard and saw living in modern Israel. When pro-Israelis or those on the fence hear of this, it's helpful that Israelis corroborate they heard and saw the same with their own little ears and eyes. Of course, Israel keeps Israelis from seeing its crimes. But they talk about them on air as if it's normal. Abnormal is the new normal in the military Israeli society where almost everyone is a soldier and no one even thinks remotely like a civilian anymore. That's why you hear Israelis discussing discrimination with such coolness and ease. It's a plan, not concerning a people. This is what Israel has intentionally created and how we are where we are with Israelis committing atrocities without even activating their moral compass and refusing. They lose a leg murdering children and get an iPhone.

this is true. like any indigenous people, it's not important what nationality a person is but whether others accept them as human and deserving of rights. Even those trying to liberate themselves from occupation are in essence fighting to have their rights observed, including the right of self-determination. And those who are denying rights to the indigenous people in general usually have something to gain by denying those rights, such as land, resources or favour of the occupying power. So you are right but I think he's proven that it's important for a community to own it's name and culture. Indeed cultural genocide and dehumanization are essential components of ethnic cleansing, and it is telling that those who deny these rights also justify the physical murder of individuals. As a contrast you can look at the genocidal eras in North America, where observation of a particular tribe is entirely based on whether a person feels that they have legitimate rights as humans and therefore as a community. while indigenous people were still being hunted, their communities were not recognized. where the indigenous population was supported to survive, their culture including language waa also recognized e.g. Inuit of Northern Canada
Hello, thank you for this feedback. A few points to share: 1. The Palestinians are not seeking the extermination of Jews like the Nazis were. 2. The Palestinians are the indigenous population because they've been living in that region for the past 2,000 years. The Jews who have had a presence in Palestine are also included amongst this indigenous population. 3. The Palestinian Jews, Christians, and Muslims never had any problems during Ottoman rule. 4. The problems started when European Jews adopted Zionism as a nationalistic ideology and started coming into Palestine en masse with the blessings of the British who were the administrators of Palestine from 1918 to 1948. 5. Given that there's now a third generation of Israelis living in that land and a third generation of Palestinians who are disenfranchised, the best compromise is to go for an ODS (One Democratic State) where everyone between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea are given EQUAL RIGHTS. 36:00 actually reviving is not an accurate term - the language was reconstructed and many linguists (including Israelis) consider it a constructed language - see Paul wexler for example and Zuckermann - the latter went on to say that it shouldn't even be called Hebrew but rather Israeli - and that it is not a semetic language but semito european - a mishmash of primarily yiddish - arabic - aramaic and 'biblical hebrew' - honestly I'm surprised many people miss this point - "hebrew was dead" even in Babylonian times - that's why many Jewish prayers are in Aramaic - that's why Aramaic was the lingua franca during Jesus's time - to purport that a language that was dead even back than is today revived is absurd -
Hello, thank you for the feedback. Yes, excellent point! "Reconstructed" seems to be the better way to put it. Given that neither Zach nor myself are linguists, we went with the word "reviving" as that's how it was always portrayed in the history books. I was aware of Arabic and Yiddish's influence on Hebrew (or Israeli as you put it) but not so much about the other languages. Would make for an interesting discussion if we could get a linguist on the show. Agreed as well about your points regarding Jesus and Aramaic. Thanks again for sharing all this info! Thanks for your reply - unfortunately this whole idea of 'revived' is perpetuated everywhere and most people don't call it out - so I don't blame you guys - but the distinction is important - because 'revived' implies this 'unbroken' link to the 'land' going back 2000 years - it's a part of zionist myth making- for example in wikipedia it says "Hebrew is the only living Canaanite language today." which is absolutely preposterous - canaannite - phonecian and so forth are all dead languages - there are no longer any native speakers (that is what dead language means) - so you can't even know what the language sounded like - anything you come up with is pure speculation and reconstruction - and that was the case with Hebrew - I think it would be great if you guys tackle this - because very few have addressed this angle - and like many things related to the history of Palestine you will find those who spread lies and those who dig to find the truth. @@bookcafepodcast
This is simply wrong. Most male Jews in most places and most periods of history were literate or semi-literate in Hebrew. Thus, it was never a dead language like Latin where only the princes and clergy could speak it, thus constituting 2 percent of the population max. There is not much different between Biblical Hebrew & Modern Hebrew. The verb tenses has been subtlety changed and verb order has changed. Plus, new words for new modern inventions. That's it
Zack is correct, that history and what is happening in Israel today are separate issues. He just doesn’t understand Palestinians broke that law on Oct 7th. International Law: Neither the civilian population as a whole, nor individual civilians, may be attacked. Attacks may only be made against military objectives. That doesn’t get brought up too often does it. Everyone hates seeing the weaker kid get beat up, but in this case the weaker kid needs to stop killing people, bus bombings, firing rockets randomly with the ideology of from the “River to the See”. Yasser Arafat had a chance at peace, they could not close the deal or stop the terrorist. Everyone wants to omit that piece of history. That leads us today.
Hi, thanks for this feedback. We did not get to discuss the events of October 7 in great detail because this episode was focused more on his 2017 dissertation. However, if you search for Zack on TH-cam, you'll find that he's given numerous interviews about the events of October 7. Zach does not condone what was done by Hamas on October 7. Even Hamas themselves recently put out a statement admitting that mistakes were made, vis-a-vis they were looking for hostages as bargaining chips but that there were innocents who got caught in the crossfire. As Hamas is a non-state actor, I'm not sure about what laws apply to them. But as Israel is indeed a state actor, they are held to international law. Prof. Norman Finkelstein spoke numerous times of Israel using Palestinians as human shields by putting them up on Israeli tanks, getting them to walk in front of Israeli soldiers to trigger mines, and so forth. And finally, as Zack has said in other interviews, October 7 didn't happen in a vacuum. It's a tipping point that is a direct outcome of 17 years of siege, a collective "punishment" for the people of Gaza for electing Hamas in a free and fair election. So in effect, the law was broken by the Israeli state and continues to be broken everyday with the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing. The suicide bombings are long over, and if you cared enough about the trajectory of this situation--including the ongoing development of Hamas rather than simplistic propaganda---you would know that Hamas has proffered political solutions to Israel several times over the years. Israel has refused all political solutions since the First Intifada, and only implements (and responds to) military ones.
I see you are one of those who never gets the memo and repeats the same lie . Palestinians have been butchered prior to Oct 7th without a peep from you or the rest of the Zionists. You are one of those who when you see smoke assumes it caused the fire. And not the fire causing the smoke. It’s embarrassing honestly. Hebrew was in heavy use over the past 2000 years in writing, reading and prayer by every Jew. In the Midrash, compiled by the Rabbis in Tiberias before Islam, they called the Holy Land "Palestini" when speaking about famine there.
Exactly. But Zachary has a completely different opinion on this matter. To be honest, it was the "last straw" for me. Is Hebrew almost a copy of Arabic? This is historical nihilism. Rubbish...
Just to clarify: Hebrew was certainly a language of Liturgy for 2,000 years. But not a spoken / vernacular language. So what I've written above and what Zach said is perfectly compatible. The guest shortens the etymology of the word „Palestine“. Antique Hellenists (Herodot ~ 450 BCE) used to eponym lands by the names, its inhabitants used for selfdescription. In the case of the kingdoms of Judaea/Israel they translated litterally the meaning of „the one, who wrangled with god“ by the greec word for „wrestler“ πάλη (used for olympic wranglers) πάλαιστος = palaistos. But the name might also be coined by hellenstic jews after 325 BCE. Anyhow if Arabs began in 1965 describing themself as PLO, by „Palestinians“ they use the hellenised word for Israelites.

this is folk etymology and there' s no proof whatsoever that Herodotus meant to the kingdom of Israel with the name, specially because in Herodotus times that kingdom had long disappeared. The most accepted origin of the name if from Peleset, a name which appears in Egyptian documents of the time of Ramses III as a people ( part of the Peoples of the Sea ) defeated by Egypt and which settled in what was later to be called Palestine, much before the Hebrew conquest of Canaan. For more coincidence, the Pelesets seems to have come from around Ancient Greece and had rapports with Mycenae, so it is not impossible that Herodotus heard of their existence 800 years later.
Pretty obviously, Judaism, Christianity and Islam have many points in common. Some of these hated Arabic-speakers in Gaza will have very similar DNA to many Israelis. This is a civil war with the U.S. principally supporting 1 side at the rate of 11 million American dollars a day with more to come. It was also supporting UNWRA until quite recently so what is going on in the Middle East? A lot of foreign interference, it seems.
Hi, thank you for your feedback. Yes, you're right about that. Many of today's Palestinians are Jews who converted to Christianity and Islam. It's a civil war like you said. And even from the point of view of the religious texts, the Jews are descendants of Israelites while Arabs are descendants of Ishmaelites. So it's as much a family squabble as much as it is a civil war. By the way do feel free to subscribe to the channel. We have a new episode out where we speak to Yasser Arafat's biographer. The Palestinian identity is a geographic identity referring to the people who inhabit that region. But what's in a name? The core of the matter is equality. While Zach is probably right about the bits that he talks in isolation from each other; he is not able to coalesce these bits into a coherent case for Palestine as an old Nation. This strengthens the hands of those who argue it as a case of neo-nationalism. He also does not mention the subliminal religious hatred at play between Islam and Judaism for which former would be given greater credit.
The last part - about documents, discussions behind the closed doors, etc. is very interesting. I am sure, that all arab archives are open for researchers and they prove that arabs never attack civilians and that their goal was to create an independent palestine!

To the host: I noticed your English was excellent. Are you a Bangladeshi/Canadian? You have a great channel. I'll be watching more of your videos, but also trying to get this slaughter ended from Kingston, Ontario.
Hello, thank you for your question. I did my undergrads from the University of Windsor, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. But apart from those few short years in Canada, I've not lived anywhere else except Bangladesh. The reason I have full command over the English language is because I'm a product of my country's English medium education system. There isn't a whole lot of kids in Bangladesh that get to go to English medium schools, mainly for economic or cultural reasons. So my school education has a lot to do with the privileges which I grew up with. A lot of times, the kids who go to such schools do so with the idea of settling abroad someday. But Bangladeshi society changed since I graduated and there's just as much opportunity within the country as there is outside it. Thanks again for the question; I'm glad to have an opportunity to talk about myself for a change. 🙂 -Omar
Hello new here, 1. 44:00 Its sounds like you argue that the idea of "Transfer" was a taboo topic, which it was not. it was heavily debated throughout the 20's century in mainstream media and local media mainly since the 6 days war. before the 6 days war the idea of transfer was different in meaning, because most of the transfer plans were made to help refugees of war to flee, which were the losing Arab forces (Jordanians, Egyptians, Syrians and so on.. a quick reminder that many of the "Palestinians" at that time had something similar to IDs from those places). 2. 49:00 The point is that is impossible to evaluate how much of an impact a certain cause had on the flee of Arabs after Israel independence, you do right that Israel had alot to do with it, and some of it even intentionally as u mentioned, but how do you know if most of them fled mainly because of "a zionist masterplan?" what makes you think this reason was stronger than the aftermath of losing a war? or an Arab leader whos calling his people to flee safely? the evidence for all of the above are presented and known. the only way to prove this is to find how Israel did it at that time *Systematically* (like the nazi germany) but there is no evidence at all for that. 3. 47:00-48:00 Does expelling people who fought against you during the war can be considered as "Ethnic cleansing"? Most of my family from my father side experienced an ethnic cleansing, their stories don't even get resemble to this one. The point is that there are many times in history were a certain type of people got expelled from their birthplace, but they were never judge as ethnic cleansing (e.g Comm China-Taiwan, Expulsion of jew from Spain and so on..) 4. 43:00-51:00 I do agree with the sentiment that there were some intentions and actions from Israel that were immorally imposing an Israeli dominance over the Arabs, but we need to remember that: a) Israel was and still is to some extent, on a constant war with her Arabs neighbours, and wars always brings out the extremes even from the most democratic nations, so you could always find extremist ideas (and sometimes even actions) if u really were looking for it. b) If you look at the bigger picture, from 70+ years of the existence of Israel, it seems like the immoral actions, ideas and ideologies are a drop in the sea after all, as they also appear in other healthy and democratic nations.

@@bookcafepodcast Thanks you sr, i can see you really care about your YT community and trying to reach everyone. admirable There are many questions i pose in my comment and i know they were directed to Zach, but i'd love to see you give a try and tackle them. gl!
Hi, thank you for your kind words. Greatly appreciated. 🙏 I can try, though my opinion would be based on whatever the historians have already written in their books. 1. Regarding "transfer", Prof. Dr. Ilan Pappé states in his book "The Ethnic Cleansing Of Palestine" that this idea was mooted much earlier on, as in the 1930s. You've stated that it came more into prominence after the Six Day War which is not entirely accurate. Plan Dalet is usually seen as the Blueprint for Ethnic Cleansing, and this plan was mooted pre-1948. And as far as my own opinion goes, when trying to create a Jewish-majority state inside an Arab-majority country, I cannot think of any other method that can do this apart from ethnic cleansing, ESPECIALLY since the Arab population was unwilling to leave their towns and villages. I also say this based on the history of my own people from the Indian subcontinent. The "transfer of population" that we saw in 1947 during the partition of India where Hindus and Sikhs migrated to India and Indian Muslims migrated to Pakistan is what I understand to be a legitimate form of "transfer" because both populations knew that two new states were being created and hence they decided to transfer themselves WILLINGLY. This then is *not* a case of ethnic cleansing. Whereas the same was not true in the case of Palestine where the Palestinian Arabs didn't want to leave at all and were subsequently prevented from returning to their homes. I wish more Israeli and Palestinian historians would also study Indian History. They would have been able to connect the dots more easily to see what went wrong during the partition of Palestine and what went right (relatively speaking) during the partition of India. 2. Regarding your second point, the question I would pose is this: is it possible to have a Jewish and Democratic State if that state has a minority Jewish population? If your answer is "yes", then I will agree that there was no "Zionist masterplan". But if you state that it's impossible to have a Jewish and Democratic State without there being a Jewish majority, then you can be rest assured that there was certainly a Zionist masterplan to ensure that there was some sort of transfer / ethnic cleansing being mulled. And further proof of this is that David Ben-Gurion was quite apoplectic after the 1967 Six Day War which happened at a time when he had already retired from politics. He couldn't understand the point of the war and why the Israeli Generals would want to capture *more* territory (and hence absorb a million more Arabs) after he had worked so hard to expell 750,000 of them in 1948. So in a strange way, 1967 was an undoing of the events of 1948 and the Jewish-majority state that Ben-Gurion was striving for. 3. Regarding your third point, as far as my own knowledge goes, "administration" can change frequently, but the lives of the PEOPLE don't change at a granular level. So be it the Ottomans or the British or some other Empire, the PEOPLE who live in their towns and villages continue to live their lives and earn a living. The only thing that changes is to whom you pay your taxes. With 1948, we see an event where the new administration (i.e. Israel) wants the land but without the people in it. This is a unique version of "Settler-Colonialism". South Africa was also a Settler-Colonial State, but the White South Africans had a dependency on their Black population to maintain a symbiotic Economic relationship. In the case of Israel, the Israeli Jews do not want their Arab population. This is as per what Prof. Dr. Noam Chomsky said in his book "On Palestine" co-written with Prof. Dr. Ilan Pappé. And in the case of the late great Prof. Dr. Edward Said, he said it even more bluntly: "The Israelis would be very happy if Palestinians would just vanish from the face of the Earth." 4. I don't think there is any problem between Israel and it's Arab neighbors in present day. Egypt is an ally as is Jordan. Both are dictatorships / monarchies. And both are in power due to Israeli backing. The *people* of Egypt and Jordan are a different issue; the people don't want to be complicit in the ongoing atrocities against the Palestinians. Which means that their governments are not representative of their people. The Palestinian issue is an easy one to solve in my opinion: i.e. we need to have both Israelis and Palestinians surrender their conflicting causes of self-determination and agree to live in "One Democratic State". One Person. One Vote. This is what Nelson Mandela wanted from the very beginning in South Africa and this clarity of thought about what he saw as the end goal is one of the reasons (amongst others) why Mandela was successful in South Africa whereas Yasser Arafat was not. Although Palestine and South Africa aren't completely analogous, there are some instances of overlap. Mandela also had a willing partner from his counterpart Botha who also realized they needed to live together and be a state for all the people who live within South Africa. I don't think we'll see Israelis think that way anytime soon unless there's a drastic change from the international arena. Apartheid survived up to 1990 due to US support. Take away the US support and Israel will transform itself into a Secular Democracy for ALL the people who live between the river and the sea. I've tried my best to answer your question. Hope this helps. Thanks again for supporting the channel. 🙏 Regards, Omar
@@bookcafepodcast 1. I said that before the 6 days war the idea of transfer was a little bit different, one version which was NOT the prominent one was the version of "Tohnit Dalet" (Plan Dalet, that is also why it doesnt last too long as a systematic approach), but the prominent one was a version of transferring war refugees, which is ignored by many anti-Zionist historians. Regarding the assumption that the Arabs wanted to stay under Israel ruling after the 48' war but got kicked out, there is 100,000 cases of Arabs who wanted to stay and under Israel ruling and got full citizenship, Israel did give the option to MOST Arabs that lived under her territory and did not took part in the war against the state. But you do right, there is also cases that Israel kicked out Arabs without a justification, but again, they are drop in the sea compared to the 100,000 other cases. 2. The question is kind of misleading. because you first assume that the Jews did not have a majority in 48' before kicking the Arabs, which is incorrect. you can look up for the un resolution in 48's and see for yourself. So if i rephrase your question correctly, then it should be "is it possible to have a Jewish and Democratic State if that state has a majority Jewish population, and more than a million of war/holocaust/pogroms jewish refugees that are on their way. The answer is OfCourse, YES. Regarding ben gurion admitting on working hard to create jewish majority, you can directly read the text from "Hamahon LeMoreshet ben gurion" that this quote was referring to, if you read it carefully you can tell that the "hard work" was mainly directed at the Israel effort to make home for Jewish refugees, and not for the expelling of Arabs. the rest taken out of context. 3.Im not sure you answered my question, Is it ok or acceptable for a nation (or for the ones who are ruling the nation) to kick out individuals or groups who want to harm them? i think you again make the assumption that Israel back then did not want all the Arabs just because of majority concerns, which is reductive (there were, again, many reasons for the Arabs flee). You can check the protocols of the Kneset since 48' till today and see for yourself, the jewish majority was one and relative very small concern compared to the others that have been debated over the years (mainly because the answer to that already planned in the "Aliyah" solution). 4. Jordan and Egypt are not the only Israel neighbours (Syria? Lubnan' n Hezbolla?), even if i take the "Leadership Aliance" which is only practical one between jordan&egypt it still leaves you with at least 3 different threats to the existence of Israel from her neighbours. which is almost unprecedented to a nation in modern time. whether you agree that Israel is living in under constant threat by her neighbours or not, don't take my word for it, look up for the Hamas and Hezbollah charters, ask Palestinians in gaza and judea&somria, ask egyptians, jordanians, lebaneese, turkish, syrians and so on. The one state solution was my dream and ideal as well, more or less as you described it, but its kinda like communisim, the idea is apealing until you see whats going on in communist regimes, same goes for the idea of one state solution, it is very appealing until you understand what's going on there in reality. you can take a peek if you like www.youtube.com/@CoreyGilShusterAskProject

Since the Arabs of Palestine had already been killing and raping Jews - Zionist and pre-Zionism alike - from before then, I think that they might have felt that the civil war that the Arabs started rendered that a bit redundant. That said, the Arabs who stayed in what became Israel, were given full citizenship, and are one in every 5 Israeli citizens.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. In every conversation, there's a sequence of events: first narrative, second narrative, and so forth. The Arabs and Jews who lived under Ottoman rule did not have any problems with one another. Problems started with the Zionist project that looked to displace one population at the expense of another with the blessing of a superpower (Britain). The same superpower that set these rules down via the Balfour Declaration created a monster that they soon lost control of and turned a blind eye to. -Omar
Palestinians called Palestine Southern Syria ( moreover established a Palestinian newspaper called "Southern Syria" about same time) only to oppose to the British Mandate? If this is the case then clearly the Palestinian identity was no more than a regional identity akin to being a New Yorker or Texan. It would be like Quebec independence proponents start referring to Quebec as Western France only to express their wish for independence. What is clear is that Arab Palestinian ( Iraqi, Syrian, Lebanese etc.) identity started shaping along the Sykes-Picot partition lines only around 1918 and came to a full self-realization in 1948 during Naqba ( it ironically repeats the Jewish story of the Babel exile )
@nbach2202 yes he sure is. We were hoping to have him on the show, but we've not heard back from him yet. Hopefully we'll have Miko Peled at some point in the future to talk about "The General's Son."
Palestine and Palestinian perople is the greated inbvention of late 20s century. The absorption of the term " #Palestinians", " #Palestinian_people" also took several decades and only from the mid-1980s did it become a more common term among the Arabs of the "Territories". The UN formally adopted the term "Palestinian people" already in the late 1970s, at the urging of the Soviet and the "non-aligned countries" bloc. The fact is that in UN resolutions 242 (at the end of the 1967 war) and 338 (at the end of the 1973 war) the "Palestinians" are not mentioned at all. At that time they were still decentralized terrorist organizations, with Islamist ideologies in different political colors, whose entire goal was to serve as a vanguard of The armies of the Arab countries against Israel, as Fatah (the founding organization of the PLO) was established at the end of 1964 by Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser at the urging of the Soviet Union, which ideologically, organizationally and strategically pushed and backed the move. It should be noted that "Palestinian" leaders have always denied the existence of a Palestinian people, until the matter eroded and they began to believe their own lies. There are still Arabs who deny the Palestinian thesis.
A couple of videos I have seen today are going to mess with the head of a Queen's University engineering prof, if he bothers to look at them. He's swallowed the Israeli bait hook, line and sinker. There's another local guy, probably Jewish, who also spouts the Israeli propaganda ad nauseam
„Uti possidetis iuris“ is a principle of international law, on which the State of Israel was established in 1948, covering the land of Cis-Jordan including Gaza. That was no „invention“ nor a „myth“. Any „History“ is based on established Law. It seem that is not in the scope of the guest.
Was there a referendum in British controlled Palestine before the decision was made to create Israel? By coincidence, or because the U.K. was out of money and had rebuild its own country, Newfoundlanders were asked in 1948 by 2 referenda whether they wanted to 1) join Canada, 2) stay under a commission of government or 3)become a Dominion once again. The first referendum didn't support joining Canada which is what the great powers wanted so a 2nd referendum was held and this time, becoming a province of Canada narrowly won. Why wasn't a similar process followed in British-controlled Palestine. Why didn't the Palestinians get some say in what would become of Palestine after the British left|?
I d like for more healthy debates between the 2 camps and let listeners to figure out themselves. What i can agree on is that the British's handling was simply bad. I d love to see the pro palestinian intellectuals to acknowledge the radical figures from the Arab side very early on at the fall of the Ottoman Empire, those who hated the jews and their migration to the territory and also the Pan Arab nations who supported these radical figures. Because for many decades, i ve listened to many historians, intellectuals who side w Palestine, but it never sticked w me because there s no logic in their extreme vilification of Israel. On both sides, you have radicals, who dislike one another w passion. But the hatred is much more common among palestinians than vice versa. When i met a palestinian family in my country, awaiting for their canadian visas, from his account, it became clear to me than UNRWA is among the main actor, culprit of their misery and the continuous hatred. These so called palestinians who never knew the land, nor desire to live there, and how their refugee status has been abused, utilized unlike the normal intl refugee status, in order to perpetrate the hatred toward Israel and refusal of acknowledging the jewish state, they ve been used as political pawns....that was crystal clear to me and it fits the many puzzles if one simply thinks logically
Hi, thank you for your feedback. I agree with you that the British handled Palestine very badly. And this is in contrast to what they did with the partition of India, which too was horrific, but comparatively better than what we've seen in Palestine. You've said some very balanced and logical things. A public debate would help to settle the matter, especially between Prof. Dr. Benny Morris and Prof. Dr. Ilan Pappé, both of whom represent the two different viewpoints vis-a-vis whether there was a conscious plan for transfer / ethnic cleansing or not. This ‘stupid’ has a PhD in what he’s talking about so has done quite extensive research. And the NOTHING that you mention is called scholarship. I would revise your statement of non fact and offer a counterpoint with evidence to his arguments. Otherwise, your comment is quite empty and designed to provoke.
The Arabs who lived in the Ottoman Empire were never “Palestinians” or “Lebanese” - they were Arabs, citizens of the Empire. And the Jews who lived next to them in this province of the Empire were the same. in Palestine under the mandate of the British Empire, passports were given to both. If we tell the story of the struggle of the Arabs of Palestine against the Jews and against the Jewish settlers from Europe, then we must start with Hitler and Khomenei. And continue the activities of the KGB of the USSR and several Arab aggressions against Israel. And the subsequent seizure of Palestinian lands by Egypt and Jordan, and then the betrayal and expulsion of the Palestinian Arabs by Arab countries.
Hi, thanks for your feedback. If I may...? There's a difference between ethnicity and nationality. And to hit home this point, I'll give an example from my own background. "Bengal" is a geographical region in North-East India. The people who come from this region are an ethno-linguistic people known as the Bengalis. Bengal region today is shared between the Indian State of "West Bengal" and the sovereign / independent nation-state of "Bangladesh". Bangladesh did not exist before 1971. But that does not mean that the Bengali people didn't exist or that the geographical region of Bengal did not exist. Similarly, "Palestine" is a distinct geographical location which is now shared between "The State of Israel" and "The Palestinian Territories". The existence of a modern nation-state doesn't invalidate the geographic identity. Hence, "Ottoman" is a nationality as is "Lebanese" and "Palestinian". But whereas the Ottoman nationality no longer exists, it has since been succeeded by the "Lebanese" nationality and the "Palestinian" nationality. We do ourselves a great disservice if we get bogged down in semantics. The core of the matter is neither one state or two states, but EQUALITY and EQUAL RIGHTS for all the people who live between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea. We recorded an episode with Isrseli journalist Gideon Levy who articulated this point quite nicely. Do feel free to check out that episode. 👇 📚 Book: The Punishment of Gaza ✍️ Author: Gideon Levy 🎧 Podcast: th-cam.com/video/C7Tkny47fXs/w-d-xo.htmlsi=WIevkI3KjSKFI2u0 Regards, Omar
A few facts which show how biased this clown is: (1) The fact that he keeps referring to the Arabs living in the land as "Palestinians" during the 1920s and 1930s when in fact they themselves did not identify as "Palestinians" at the time, but only started identifying themselves as "Palestinians" as of 1964. (2) Why is it that the Ottomans ruling the land is fine, after they conquered it from other people - meaning, he is ok with the fact that this is considered muslim land despite the fact that the muslims conquered it from other people, yet when the British conquered it -- its "colonialism". What is the difference between the "colonialism" of the British to that of the Ottomans? The Mamluks? The first Muslim conquests?? (3) Why does he put some emphasis on the name "Palestine", when he knows very well that the people now known as "Palestinians" only started identifying as Palestinians in 1964, and without mentioning that the vast majority of these people moved to the area between 1850 and 1947 from surrounding arab areas. This is shown clearly by most Palestinian surnames showing where they are from, and also you can learn this by studying statistics of the population under both the Ottomans and the British. Most of them moved here. They are not indigenous.
Hello, thanks for your very extensive comment. We welcome contrarian viewpoints. I won't go into all the points you've mentioned; will leave it for others on the thread. However, I'll just make a small comment on British colonialism since I live in the Indian Subcontinent and we've been under British colonial rule for 200 years. The main difference is that British colonization is "exploitation colonization". India was exploited economically solely for the benefit of the British. Before the British came, India was the richest country in the world with close to 25% of the world's GDP. By the time the British left, India was the world's poorest country. And where I'm from - Bangladesh - formerly the Province of Bengal, went from being the richest Indian province to the poorest. You can find out more about this from the book "An Era of Darkness" by Dr. Shashi Tharoor. The book also goes by the name "Inglorious Empire" in some regions. The Mamluks and the Ottomans were also empires, but whatever they did benefitted the Empire as a whole, not just the metropole. Hope this helps. -Omar
@@bookcafepodcast Sorry, but that is totally irrelevant under the circumstances we are discussing. In this case, the Mandate was established from the beginning with the clear purpose of conveying it to other people, whereas originally the idea was that Jordan would be the Arab state and Israel the Jewish state. There was on issue here of taking advantage of the land. And its irrelevant to my point - the Arabs conquered the land, they are colonizers of the land. They did not own it any more or any less than the British once the British conquered it.
The Arabs became a regional power after the advent of Islam and conquered the land known as Palestine some 1,400 years ago. Perhaps the question we should be asking is how long one has to remain in a patch of land to be considered 'indigenous'. The Arabs who first ventured into that area in 636 CE have had countless generations of children that were born and brought up there. If you say that no length of time would make a people indigenous and hence why the Arabs are not indigenous, then I would be interested to know what we are to make of the patriarch Abraham who himself came from Ur of Chaldees (modern day Iraq), after which his descentants - both Ishmaelites (Arabs) and Israelites (Jews) have been living in that piece of land for generations. To deny one set of people from being indigenous and and not the other seems puzzling to me. -Omar
@@bookcafepodcast That is incorrect. The land changed hands a number of times following the original Arab conquests, and the Ottomans were Turks, not Arabs. They ruled the land for 400 + years, and it is very well documented that during such time, the land was very sparsely populated, with number of between 150-200K. If you check population statistics of the Ottomans and of the British, you will see that the vast majority of Arabs who became known as "Palestinians" in 1964 moved to the land between 1850 and 1947. So that is hardly hundreds of years, save for a smaller number of "Palestinians" who do have that history, as do some Jews who have always stayed in the land. By the way, I am all for a two state solution. However history shows that is has always been the Jews who have been willing to agree to a two state solution, and always the Arabs who have refused and preferred a violent solution. These are just facts. From 1936, 1947, through to 2000 and 2008, that has been the case. So now people come and point fingers at Israeli society which has become right wing, without understanding, that in the 90s and early 2000s, there was a large majority in Israel for the two solution. That changed solely due to the actions of the Palestinians, who each time refused peace and turned to terrorism, suicide bombers in pubs, cafes, hotels, bus stops, stabbings, shooting etc etc. Can anyone really blame Israeli society for no trusting the Palestinians anymore??? How many times can you hold your hand in peace and get punched in the face without deciding you have had enough???
I'm sure the Ottomans were Turks my friend, there's no disputing that. My point was that the Arabs entered that land in the year 634 or 636 CE and there has been an Arab presence there ever since. The Ottoman Turks came much later. If you recall, even the Kurdish leader Saladin had control of that region at the time of the Crusades (predating the Ottomans) and he allowed Jewish and Christian pilgrims to visit Jerusalem in peace. We will have to agree to disagree on how sparsely populated the land was. Regarding the one state or two state solution, if you have time do check out our other episode with Andrew Gowers, Yasser Arafat's official biographer. In a nutshell, Arafat and the PLO wanted one democratic state from the very beginning where all Jews, Christians, and Muslims would live together under a secular democracy. The two state solution was conceived by the UN as a solution to the Arab-Jewish conflict, but at no point did Israeli Prime Ministers ever consider having a Palestinian state next to an Israeli one. And this is a bipartisan issue amongst both the Israeli right AND the Israeli left. Ben-Gurion was never planning to accept two states and he was from Labor. Nor was Menachem Begin and he was a right wing Likud Prime Minister. It's a complex reality and for sure the Palestinians have their faults as well, I agree with you on that. All the same, do check out the episode. Maybe we can discuss some more afterwards. @bookcafepodcast At a time when Palestine was not exist? Postmodernists narrative, rather new one! That time they called Jesus as "Jesus of Nazareth." The territory name "Palestine" was given later, by the Romans in the second century AC, after the Jewish rebellion, in particular, to abolish names such as "Kingdom of Israel" and Judea, Samaria etc. So, Jesus was not "Palestinian", he was born by Jewish mother and had Jewish disciples and lived among Jews.

The first reference to Palestina was during roman times. No official document IN HISTORY until 1964 refers in any way to Palestinian. The local population referred to the area as Syria. The descendants of the judean kingdom are the Palestinians of today. DNA backs it up. Jews of old very Palestinians who practiced Judaism. Nothing else. Today we have those who converted to Christianity and those who became Muslims. But they are the same people of the land.
Which Hebrew? Ancient one or the newly created one? Hebrew was not main language of ancient Jews, Aramaic was. So how would they have named philistines in Hebrew and not Aramaic?
I agree that many of the 700,000 Jews who lived in the land in 1012 did superficially convert to Islam. The population dwindled over time, many returning to their Jewish religion and most of those who had completely converted moved to other countries. The area, most often referred to as Southern Syria, became a disease stricken wasteland. It is true that some of the population who can trace their roots back, as can I, share some common DNA indicators. At no time was anyone called or known as Palestinian until after the Great War. The increase in population of the Arabs (to be distinguished from the few non Arab natives) was due to the migration from many adjacent countries. Interesting fact: the ancestry of Mahmoud Abas the dictator of the PA and hated by the local population as "not one of ours" can be traced to Jews who lived in Saffed, one branch of whom converted to Islam.@@dondiegodeazambuja9410

Brutal.
I agree that the two partitions are not completely analogous.
I just came across your Podcast, and I have some of these Books. Both Miko Peled & Nurit Peled Elhanan, Ilan Pappe, Im so Greatful for the Links to many more. Thankyou for so much information. Subbed

In the 90s "transfer" was spoken of on the news on a daily basis, "to make Israeli lives easier". And Blue Box and Tantura (x400 Palestinian villages), Israeli movies, clearly show "transfer" was in the original documents planning Israel from Europe well before 1947.
Hi, thank you for your feedback.

Wow. It's very distressing to hear that.

If the ''Palestines'' won't change 😞 than No. Israel can't live next to arab Nazis. Sorry.
this is true. like any indigenous people, it's not important what nationality a person is but whether others accept them as human and deserving of rights.
A few points to share:

👍
Zimmerman is the Ilan Pappe of languages. The guy invents fake data to support his absurd thesis and degenerate hypothesis.

Israel's been violating international law since '67. The occupied have a right to defend themselves.
Yes, absolutely.
Every occupying power can expect to see some form of resistance from the indigenous population, be it Gandhian or an armed struggle.
In 2024 with the copious amount of text, you still come up with this ? It says you are not up to speed or very ill informed. Both of which is embarrassing considering the times we live in.
Knowledge is the key to understanding this complex conflict. Enjoyed

Yes, no doubt Hebrew was a language of liturgy over the past 2,000 years.
Exactly. But Zachary has a completely different opinion on this matter. To be honest, it was the "last straw" for me. Is Hebrew almost a copy of Arabic? This is historical nihilism. Rubbish...
Just to clarify:
Hebrew was certainly a language of Liturgy for 2,000 years.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

Hi, thank you for your feedback.
I would suggest Prof. Dr. Rashid Khalidi's book "Palestinian Identity" to get a clearer picture.
All identities are man-made. The Palestinian identity is a geographic identity referring to the people who inhabit that region.
But what's in a name? The core of the matter is equality. If Palestinians could live under a democratic Israeli state nobody would mind in the least bit.

But I don't remember any mention of their access to arab's archives, only to the israel's ones. And if information is coming from one side only, then there is a good chance, that the overall picture is very distorted.
E.g. if two persons are cheating, both claim them to be good, and you publish information about one party cheats, then the impression will be that the one person is good (no information of his cheats) and the other one is bad (we have a verified information that he was cheating).

Hello new here,
1. 44:00 Its sounds like you argue that the idea of "Transfer" was a taboo topic, which it was not. it was heavily debated throughout the 20's century in mainstream media and local media mainly since the 6 days war. before the 6 days war the idea of transfer was different in meaning, because most of the transfer plans were made to help refugees of war to flee, which were the losing Arab forces (Jordanians, Egyptians, Syrians and so on.. a quick reminder that many of the "Palestinians" at that time had something similar to IDs from those places).
2. 49:00 The point is that is impossible to evaluate how much of an impact a certain cause had on the flee of Arabs after Israel independence, you do right that Israel had alot to do with it, and some of it even intentionally as u mentioned, but how do you know if most of them fled mainly because of "a zionist masterplan?" what makes you think this reason was stronger than the aftermath of losing a war? or an Arab leader whos calling his people to flee safely? the evidence for all of the above are presented and known. the only way to prove this is to find how Israel did it at that time *Systematically* (like the nazi germany) but there is no evidence at all for that.
3. 47:00-48:00 Does expelling people who fought against you during the war can be considered as "Ethnic cleansing"? Most of my family from my father side experienced an ethnic cleansing, their stories don't even get resemble to this one. The point is that there are many times in history were a certain type of people got expelled from their birthplace, but they were never judge as ethnic cleansing (e.g Comm China-Taiwan, Expulsion of jew from Spain and so on..)
4. 43:00-51:00 I do agree with the sentiment that there were some intentions and actions from Israel that were immorally imposing an Israeli dominance over the Arabs, but we need to remember that: a) Israel was and still is to some extent, on a constant war with her Arabs neighbours, and wars always brings out the extremes even from the most democratic nations, so you could always find extremist ideas (and sometimes even actions) if u really were looking for it. b) If you look at the bigger picture, from 70+ years of the existence of Israel, it seems like the immoral actions, ideas and ideologies are a drop in the sea after all, as they also appear in other healthy and democratic nations.

@@bookcafepodcast Thanks you sr, i can see you really care about your YT community and trying to reach everyone. admirable
There are many questions i pose in my comment and i know they were directed to Zach, but i'd love to see you give a try and tackle them. gl!
Hi, thank you for your kind words. Greatly appreciated. 🙏
I can try, though my opinion would be based on whatever the historians have already written in their books.
Dr. Edward Said, he said it even more bluntly: "The Israelis would be very happy if Palestinians would just vanish from the face of the Earth."
Regards,
Omar

Thanks. Will surely check it out.
And Miko Peled 'The General son'.
He's the brother of Israeli's literary professor you've interviewed recently.
@nbach2202 yes he sure is.

„Uti possidetis iuris“ is a principle of international law, on which the State of Israel was established in 1948, covering the land of Cis-Jordan including Gaza. That was no „invention“ nor a „myth“. Any „History“ is based on established Law. It seem that is not in the scope of the guest.
Hi thanks for the feedback.
Could you explain what that phrase means?
@@bookcafepodcastYou can probably google it. It's Latin, but maybe, you know that.

On another note, you may find our other episode with Prof. Dr. Nurit Peled-Elhanan to be quite thought provoking as well.

This is myth as we saw in the episode. Emperor Hadrian used the word Palestine because of his love for Greek culture.
Which Hebrew? The newly minted one? Palestine predates this Hebrew so the only way Palestine could have meant invaders was if it was created by Zionists. Hebrew wasn’t the official language of Jews. It was temple language. Jesus spoke Aramaic just like the Jews of his time. So off with your tosh

Thanks again for supporting the channel, we really appreciate it. 🙏

That's one of the myths that has become accepted as truth.
In reality the word Palestine has been in existence since ancient times.

He makes it up as he goes. There are no coins, there are no governments there is no history. The Palestine Philharmonic Orchestra was Jewish. The Palestine Post was Jewish. The first reference to Palestina was during roman times. No official document IN HISTORY until 1964 refers in any way to Palestinian. The local population referred to the area as Syria. It was the British, who believe in studying Latin, who used the name Palestine in 1917. They were unaware of any boundaries so they used the words "in Palestine".
Hello, thank you for the feedback.
You're welcome to your opinions even though Dr. Zachary Foster has given many points to counter that narrative during the episode.

He did not provide actual arguments to dismiss these so called myths, only statements that were particularly vague. Do you not find it particularly interesting that the PLO was founded in 1964 after Arafat goes to the Soviet Union as a guest of the KGB? It was also after that the planes started to be hijacked.by the PLO and other "Palestinian" terrorists groups. Was he awarded a doctorate or did the University aske for better proof because you did not introduce him with a title? @@bookcafepodcast
Bingo, there are ignorant people all around acting as academia. I would ask this Book Writer what ANZAC are and what they did. He has no idea. Lost in his own rhetoric. No wonder the world is woke as batshit.
Ignorant children, acting as if they know everything. The world is doomed.

If he did get a degree from this, it's pretty shit academics. Even my undergraduate research saw more scrutiny.
He shows no understanding of International law. Philistines (phlishhtim in Hebrew) comes from the Hebrew words POLESH which means invader. Those who were called Philistines could have been a number of different groups invading from the sea during the Judean Kingdom period.
Hello, thank you for the feedback.
Every historian on both sideshas good arguments.
Perhaps a debate will be more conducive to settling this question. We'll try to arrange one soon.

@@dondiegodeazambuja9410It would be wonderful if these peoples recognized that simple fact. There is no need for Israel to repress the Arabs living amongst them.
More and more fabrication
