Lava breaks out from established tubes when there is a surge in the supply which the tube can't handle or the tube becomes blocked by the collapse of the roof and walls. In this case there was surge in lava about four to six weeks prior. The tube was about seven miles long from the source to the ocean. As of today, March 15, 2010, the lava is once again on the surface about four miles from the ocean after the tube became blocked at the beginning of the year. This happens a few times a year.
On my hikes I would typically take about one hour of video and select a few minutes of the most interesting clips, otherwise it would be very repetitious. Also, I selected the clips which would be different from my other videos. Another important factor is that ten years ago it would take me two hours to upload a three minute video because of the low speed internet where I lived in Hawaii. If the internet dropped out I would have to start over again.
Looks like me after eating taco bell :P In all seriousness, very good video. Great footage! I knew I subscribed to your youtube channel for a reason :) Hope to see more!

I used a Canon PowerShot SX10 IS, which was a very simple and inexpensive camera available at the time. I hiked about three miles to the lava flow and walked around the area taking videos and photos which I found interesting. It is not as complicated and dangerous as Discover, National Geographic and other media companies would have you believe.
There is a description under the video which explains where it originated and what is going on. You can also find more useful information on the links which I provided.
The lava turns black when it hardens into rock, so everything you see in the video including the sand is made from hardened lava. All the Hawaii islands were formed from lava.
Lava has a silvery color immediately after it cools down to a solid. Often there is a silvery crust on the outside surface but there is still liquid lava underneath. The color gradually becomes darker as the solid rock cools and eventually becomes almost black like the surroundings after many months.
@@hayaeman6118 the basalt lava in Hawaii is a mixture of many minerals and elements such as iron and magnesium which may be silvery when in the pure state as it comes out of the earth and crystallizes into a solid. But these elements are quickly oxidized when they react with the oxygen in the atmosphere specially at very high temperatures. For instance, the exterior of an iron bar may be dark and rusty on the outside, but if you cut out a section, the interior will be bright and shiny. Once exposed to the oxygen in the air, the shiny part will oxidize and become darker and even rusty over a period of time.
The poor ocean needs help of someone.please help her coz when you help someone up the hill you get nearer to the top yourself. Respect the nature, Respect the nature.
Small flows like this are relatively safe to approach. As you get closer you can feel the intense heat on your face and exposed skin similar to being close to an oven or campfire. It is this intense radiant heat that keeps you at a distance that your body can tolerate for a few seconds while you take a picture or video and then you retreat to cool off.
In truth, it seems like an excuse, but if the water does not take the name of the fire, then the water does not take the name of the fire. It is said that Kovansa has happened in the country.
The lava flows “whither so ever it lists” dazzling beautiful! PWG
