How to Use a Refractor Telescope

- In this video we demonstrate how to use a simple refractor telescope on an AZ mount. This telescope was from Costco for about $200 (for some reason, they don’t list this online, you had to go into the store). It is similar to the Omni 102AZ, the Explore Scientific 102 series, and the Skywatcher Startravel series.

Love these explanations for “the rest of us” who are casual users. I have the Celestron version of this same telescope. The tripod ain’t great but it’s fine for sometimes use. Thanks as always John.
Looks like my Omni👍
Thanks!
Thanks for all the information. My daughter got me a telescope for Christmas and although I’ve always wanted one, I have no idea how to use it. Lol
Thanks for explaining viewing and photographing are different. Mine came with a setup for my phone, and I really want to take pictures, but I think it’s best I learn to use the telescope first.
I’m definitely going to check out more of your videos.
Merry Christmas!
Merry Christmas!
Yay new video
I have a question I have a normal manual Finderscope so. Once I mark the planet in middle of the cross section do I need to realign my telescope to left or right or I just need to adjust the focal length thanks in advance I'm a amateur telescope user do like to know more about It thanks in advance❤❤❤❤
You need to center the object in the telescope and then realign the finder.
This was the most helpful video for usr i found lol thanks
Thanks!
WE LOVE JOHN
I have a Bresser (maker of Explore Scientific I think) 90/500 refractor. Very light and portable and allows me to see bands of Jupiter and rings of Saturn (but not a ton of detail) and deep sky objects. And its cheap. Also use an AZ mount. Can carry tripod and scope easily and setup in a couple of minutes. Would like a bigger scope but I have a wife.
When I bought my Dobsonian, my wife got leather boots. It worked out.
@@LearnToStargaze Haha.
I had a difficult experience yesterday even while "red flash lighting" your book, its a great book. However, i opted to go for the starsense explorer app but even that was off a few meters I did try my best to view some DSOs following your book probably because its a full moon out there but hmmm ill update this as the moon wanes.
The darkness of your sky is by far the biggest determinant of how much you can see. If you look at a light pollution map, most Messier galaxies don’t start to show until you reach the blue zones. And you generally want almost no moon for observing DSOs.
@@LearnToStargaze Yeap thats very logical though even some bright star clusters were not on target it seems until I used the starsense app
I do really want to get use to your book though.
hey i just got a aries explorer one and the view is blurry plus the focuser isnt working, can you tell me how to fix it please?
You might want to visit your local astronomy club or simply send the telescope back. That scope doesn’t seem to be all that functional in the first place.
Hi John, I see that video was done 5 months ago. First thank you for the tips. So last week I picked up a Celestron NexStar 60 GT at a yard sale for 40 bucks came with two eye pieces the tripod with computerized mount and a nice carrying case. Got it for wife for she has been wanting a telescope. After I got it home, I made sure that the motor worked at first it did not but did get it to move. My question is what some of the first things are I should do after buying a used telescope i.e. cleaning and such what not to do when cleaning and what add Ons can I add to this telescope. If you have a video that talks about such things when buying a used telescope could you let me know would appreciate it. thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
Brad
Hi! I don’t do anything in particular. I just clean lenses with an eyeglass cleaning kit. For technical issues, it’s important to take these to your local astronomy club as the internet generally does not help here.
@LearnToStargaze Many bottom end of range scopes from name brands use lower quality diagonal mirror and eyepieces.
Frequently the eyepieces are of a cheaper design in addition to being of poorer quality, such a Hyugens and Kellner.
Plössl is the standard 'good' design of eyepiece nowadays.
Significant improvements can often be made by improving the attached accessories, for not too much money.
I myself bought a svbony Dielectric mirror, 7-21 zoom eyepiece and 32mm Plössl eyepiece. They seem to be quite good for the money.
I can't compare them to top quality because I don't have any of those, but the svbony stuff is markedly better than what it came with.
These are parts that can be used on your/her next scope as well, if you decide to upgrade.
Add ons I'd suggest are good quality diagonal mirror and Plössl or zoom eyepieces.
The attached parts sold with basic scopes are often of lower quality and less efficient (cheaper) design, even if the tube and objective lens are ok.
I went with a SVBony dielectric diagonal mirror and 7-21 zoom eyepiece. Also a 32mm Plössl. Relatively cheap and seem quite well regarded on TH-cam astronomy channels.
I have a Orion 127Mak and these bits were a significant improvement over what came with it.
Quick question. I am viewing with exact telescope from Costco. I have an astigmatism in my eyes. Should I be wearing glasses to accommodate for this? Also. I have only been viewing from inside my house as it’s cold out in January here in Canada. Regardless i am having difficulty focusing on Jupiter. It seems like a bright white ball. Is that bc of my telescope? Or is it bc I am viewing through the window of my house? Or bc I can’t focus it good enough to compensate for my astigmatism? Any thoughts or tricks would be great.
Hi! You can’t use the telescope through a window. Too many reflections. But you’ll have to test it with and without glasses to see what works best for you. Good luck!
Telescope can compensate for near or far sightedness but not astigmatism, chose eypiece with long eye relief.
Looking out a window gives heat waves like looking down a road in hot weather like a mirage that gets magnified also .
@@gerryroush8391 thank you. I will try it.
I have a question. I have been having a nexstar 4se telescope and its pretty descent. I was thinking of getting an 8se and selling the 4se because i live in new york. But i also like starsense. Please tell me what i should do. Thank you
The 8SE is pretty great, if you already are familiar with the 4SE, you’ll probably really enjoy the 8. Remember, Starsense doesn’t track or anything, and you’d need the 8 inch dob to match the aperture of the 8Se.
If you have the budget, I highly recommend the Evolution 8 over the 8se. Much better mount/tripod. Many think the SE mount is undersized for this 8in scope. The Evolution has a higher weight rating, internal rechargeable battery and built-in WiFi.
I'm guessing you don't have very dark skies. Do you take your 4se to dark sights? If not, you might want to consider EAA so you can actually see stuff. The easiest/cheapest way is to get the ZWO SeeStar 50.
Should I get Celestron Astromaster 130 eq or a Refractor of 102 mm?
102mm
Is the Orion Starblast 102mm refractor a good telescope?
Hi! The optics are okay, it might be a bit challenging to point on that mount.
John did you ever get that 102mm Explore Scientific refractor fixed? That is a cool scope!
Yes! I used plumbers Fix-it-stick bonding puddy! (Scott never did send the replacement parts like he said he would during the video).
@@LearnToStargaze Good to hear. I love a long achromat. Lets say Scott was too busy and forgot lol!
I laughed so hard at that 😂 6:54 also when was this scope in stock at costco? I'm looking to get one like that, unsure about getting a 600mm or 900mm 102 from galaeyes, wanting to look at nebula and galaxies
Nebulae and Galaxies are mostly a function of how dark your skies are, less the instrument.
Buen teléscopio
Nice.
If you get a barlow lens with your "beginner" scope chuck it away.
Ahh that explains it then! I will do yes, thanks for the advice.
Dont throw it away.. i fully dissassembled barlow.. took just the lens and using with 20mm eye piece.
Its basically working like 1.25x zoom now.
As u know barlow lens have the tube to increase the focus length. Remove the tube, u basically reduce focus length. And u can still get some value from it
