Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th Generation Fan Replacement

  • *** UPDATE: The fan that I bought has already started to loudly fail again as of mid May 2018, so if you can get the part for super cheap via Ebay or another vendor, I'd suggest it! No sense on spending big bucks if it's gonna fail in a few months.
This video goes over the replacement of a fan on a Lenovo X1 Carbon 4th generation model, specifically type 20FB. The fan replacement part is 01AW976 - I bought it off Amazon here: www.amazon.com...
I used Arctic MX-4 Thermal Paste and 70% isopropyl alcohol. You can definitely choose whatever thermal paste you prefer; I bought mine on Amazon. In terms of the alcohol, it's probably better to have used a concentration that's 90% or higher, but I didn't have it on hand and was itching to replace the fan.
And of course, I should have been using an anti-static grounding cord around my wrist so I didn't fry any of the parts, but unfortunately I no longer live close to a Fry's Electronics.

Nice video for Gen4. One tip that will help you the most: To prevent CPU turbo boosting which is the main cause of the crazy CPU throttling up/down constantly -> change Window Power Plan's CPU Max Performance setting from 100 to 99%. It should make the X1 runs much smoother.

Thanks for the excellent video tutorial H0llie! My X1 Gen 4 fan was wheezing fiercely and following your instructions I was able to change it out with no problems. Getting the battery disconnected and reconnected was the hardest part of the process. I had bought the M4 thermal paste as you recommended, but surprisingly my $35 ebay replacement fan came with a strip of (dry) grey thermal paste on it already so it turns out I didn't need the M4.
On a separate note - I hope my daughter grows up to be as tech savvy as you!

Hmmm you might want to remove that old thermal paste with isopropyl alcohol and reapply new stuff. I mean, it'll probably be okay if you don't, but applying it fresh /really/ helps with the thermal conductivity. Glad the video helped!

Very, very useful video. Laptop had the same fan problem and this video told me everything I needed to replace it. Thank you for speaking clearly and telling me exactly what I needed. Thought maybe the camera could have been closer to the laptop but I managed to make it out fine in the end. 10/10.
In case anyone else wants to know:
Think I got rinsed for the fan. Found it on Ebay. Cost around £75 total including customs tax since it came from China. Still, better than paying for a new laptop.
Kind of a shame the fan is so lame. I bought Thinkpad specifically because of their rep for reliability. I've only had it just over two years as well...
The key I think is really not to use fan intensive programmes. It's only from doing so that I first started getting fan jamming, and eventually it broke entirely so the laptop refused to turn on at all (said' Fan error' on startup). So I'm gonna keep this laptop strictly for low intensity software. And will probably get a Mac next time, much as I prefer Windows they just keep letting me down...
    Anyway thank you again!

Massively helpful video. I'm looking this up because a user has a problem with this model and the fan. I may get Lenovo to do the work, though, given the poor quality of the fans, that way it is their fault at least.

When I pick up my 4th gen, there's a horrible grinding noise. I assume the case flexes a little and the fan makes contact with something.

OK, just got the fan off. Hmm ... the metal sticker bit wasn't on straight, and a bit of it had been pushed down into the blades. Other than that it looks OK. Guess I'll save the unit for when my replacement craps out in a few months, then put it back in with the sticker straightened out, and see if it works.
**edit** Although there was a fair amount of black dust on the copper surface under the fan. So maybe the blades got chewed up a bit.

    • @h0llie_h

Unfortunately in the case of this laptop fan, I would have had to have made a "large volume order" to get the part directly from Lenovo. Since the part isn't manufactured by Lenovo, it's good enough to look up the part number via Lenovo's website support.lenovo.com/us/en/partslookup and then check on Amazon. I've included the link to the one I bought in the video description!

I imagine that after you've popped it off once it's easy to do it again -- but the first time, I don't have a sense of exactly how and where force needs to be applied, because I don't exactly understand the geometry of the thing. Felt like I was applying a fair amount of force popping it up with my fingernail on the right corner, and pushing from the back slightly towards me -- didn't budge.
