I have been using Obenhauf's LP for 7yrs now with great results. Re: "this 4oz container would last your entire life" I have gone through 3-4 of those 4oz containers and at least one of the 8oz containers over the last 7+yrs.
Well you must have lots of leather goods and use them a lot. Hats off to you sir.
Black Owl Outdoors Not at all Sir. Get back at me after your first year of use and we shall see how much you have gone through, and if that first 4oz container of yours is still on track to last your entire life
I bought Obenauf's for my Brooks bicycle saddle and ended up using it for lots of stuff (yup, it smells good !) - I really like to use on my micarta knife handles because it makes them more grippy and I like the it darkens them some. Thanks for another good video...
Hmm, never thought about it putting it on micarta. I may have to try that.
The heat from your hands will help it penetrate. You can run it on your palm first to get some heat into it before applying.
that's what she said!
Obenauf's is the best that I've found for leather.
Obenaufs LP vs. Snow Seal.
Pros and cons?
Will this product be good for s black leather coat?
The quality of this channel, footage and content wise is amazing! why do they have such small amount of subs?!
How long should I let it dry for? I plan to use this on some of my leather work shoes and hiking boots.
+watsyurdeal Really depends on how much product you apply and environmental factors. If I’m doing multiple applications, I’ll wait a few hours in between and then let it sit overnight. Hope this helps.
Nice, thanks for the vid. Where you mentioned the cleaning of your leather boots, how do you do that and what products if any do you use? Thanks in advance
I like bacon grease. I've tried sno-seal, beeswax products and neatsfoot oil, but bacon grease is free and works for me.
You can't beat free.
Does it cause any problems or does it basically act like rendered tallow?
+Sitric Brave it will darken and soften the leather and protect it from drying out. I've been using it for two years and haven't seen any negatives
Bacon grease or anything like olive oils will go rancid. Ask anyone at a leather tannery or store and they'll tell ya that.
Not a good idea. The bears will eat you.
I use mink oil and it looks very similar in consistency to Obenaufs. Smells real good too, but not sure how much different it is compositionally.
I have used some mink oil in the past. Good stuff for sure.
Mink oil is trash.
Silly question here, am I supposed to polish the boots first with kiwi polisher or does Openhauf take the place for kiwi polish ?
Never use Kiwi again, only LP, it takes care of everything
You won't need kiwi polish after using this stuff. If you want a slight sheen after you've applied the Obenhauf, then after applying it if possible allow the product to dry for several days, then buff with a horsetail brush. If you need to use the shoes the same day that you applied the Obenhauf, then after applying it, wipe the leather surface with a clean, dry terry cloth towel and then proceed to buff with a horsetail brush.
The only treatment my fire boot ever got was a brush down and hand applied obenaufs lp.
Do you have any experience with Obenaufs Leather Cleaning Cleanit spray? Does it work well or is there some other cleaner or soap you would recommend?
Can you add a polish on top of this?
What brand of boots are those?
Got it and use it.
is it good for a 400 buck black jacket?
its pretty good I use it about every 3 months
can we use this product on redwing heritage chukka 3141 oil tanned leather boots? i mostly wear boots for casual, dinners and weddings parties.. do you still recommend this product?
Redwing has leather care specific for each of their boots. Check their website.
What boots are those?

What can I use on my light brown cowboy boots that won't change the color
Bick 4
Do I need to condition my boots before applying this or will this work as a conditioner as well?
This most definitely will condition your leather. You don't need any additional conditioners with this.
Which is better the LP or the leather oil from obenauf's
The lp helps with keeping water out also. Its heavy duty. The oil would be more for summer and whatnot just to keep the leather nice and hydrated. If you're doing a lot of walking through the snow or know you'll be getting them wet then a coat or 2 of heavy duty lp will do you good. Summer I'd just use the oil
I use this on all my leather I get it on amazon
Thanks for the tip. I don't know if they sell that one in Norway, but I will have a look around I need something like that :)
- Martin
You should can get it on amazon or ebay, I just got mine.
l go thru a tub of obenauf's each year. l use it on all my leather except my leather jackets. I've tried most all leather products, since l have tons of leather items, and obenauf's is the best by far. most of the other stuff is temporarily lasting junk.
Would you put this on boots that have already been polished?
Christopher O'Dalaigh it helps to not polish them for a while, in my experience
I have a question about where you prefer to get your leather. I'm looking for some really thick stuff to use in the soles of some shoes I'd like to make. Any advice appreciated.
I would just find some thick vegetable tanned leather. No less than 10 oz. If you don't need a lot, look on ebay and the like.
Hi there!
Thanks for this!
Just an urgent question. What would you suggest for wallets making wallets more pliable after dyeing with oil dye? Is obenauf recommend for both sealing and making the wallet water resistant? What you suggest for sealing my acrylic painting designs on veg tan leather plus making it more pliable? Thanks in advance!
Obenaufs will work as a top coat and will make the leather water and scratch resistant. Definitely will make the leather supple as well. I don’t do any paints so can’t comment on that.
Black Owl Outdoors Thanks alot for your response! Much appreciated!
Do you do the exact same thing for sheath maintenance?
pretty much
Yep pretty much as long as your sheath isn't covered in mud, dirt, etc.
I’m in mud almost everyday heavy mud and my boots are dry after work everyday would this help me from having to care for them everyday it gets to be to much? Full leather redwings is what I have
Moto_Bodman might need rubber boots for that or muck boots
Thanks for the share Krik
No problem. Thanks for watching.
What do you think about mink oil? I hear it rots stitching. Curious to know your thoughts and how you compare it to Obenaufs.
I think its myth to increase sales on other brands mink oil was used for many years but I can say it makes your leather a bit too soft so not too much maybe once a year or less
looks great but seems not available in Australia. its $22 for the tub and $37 shipping from the states. youch :(
There are other very similar products about, Snow Seal and the stuff that Scarpa make for their boots are two off the top of my head that are available at local retail outdoor equipment shops. Also try rural supply stores that stock horse saddlery. There are many products out there that are a variation on this theme.
+ce4130 Hi, thanks for the reply, I really appreciate that. Good to know we have some equivalent local options.
+EarlyMist It would be worth researching a bit, I'm sure they are not all created equal, but very similar at least.
Dang it's definitely not worth that much if you can find other care products. Like the person said before, check out your local tack shops and farm stores.
whats a good one to use for lighter colored boots? i dont mind it getting darker, just not by a whole lot
Nice vid bro..thats help me..keep it up...
Why does it leave white residue in the crevices of the leather?
Zultan have the same issue. I thought it was sweat. Gonna switch to mink oil and see if it continues.
My guess would be the wax in it builds up on the laces creating that residue
It means that there was an accumulation of it there that has solidified. Easy way around that is instead of applying with your finger, apply with a toothbrush, specially around all of the crevices. That well drive it in better and prevent accumulations. After you're done applying it, you can then wipe the toothbrush off well, and then go over the crevices again with the dry/clean toothbrush to make sure there are no accumulations left.
Just a little dab will do! Haha. I'll have to try some of this.
It really is great stuff. And works well in the cold winter for dry hands!
Put some on my boots today. It brought my worn, beat to death boots back to life. Great stuff!
Now... I am a crazy mofo I want to condition the inside of my boot as much as I can also then let it dry for several days before wearing it. Good idea?
Spartacus 92 No
are you familiar with Leather Honey? if not, check it out.
No I'm not familiar with it. It's an available product?
+Black Owl Outdoors yup, Amazon carries it.
My whole life? that’s a pretty long time for a 4 oz container
I typically get maybe 1.5 to 2 year's out of a tub
Can I use WD40? :)
WD40 to treat your leather!
Roberto de Bem No
sno seal!
+Michael DeLuca "sno seal" contains petroleum, and petroleum is said to accelerate the break down of leather and the thread used in leather products.
You keep mentioning "designed for woodland firefighters" when it wasn't. It was created by ac woodland firefighter who wanted to create a product that would help outdoorsman make the most outta their boots.
i'm nowt a turtle.
Btw first
those boots are garbage! any boot that is only glued to the sole is trash
is it good for a 400 buck black jacket?
What boots are those?
