    Thanks for video. Just tore my son's 2001 Honda 400ex down last night. It was turning over slow despite replacing one way bearing and starter. Much to my consternation the crank and piston stood erect when jug came off. Crank is discolored blue telling me it is heat seized. Still rotate, barely, by hand.
    As a result I have been scouring internet for upper and lower rebuild/big bore/stroker kit. This particular kit is one of the two I had already narrowed possibilities to. Looks like I too will be purchasing and building along.
    Tore my 2004 Yamaha Warrior down as well my son blew up when riding. It too was a result of crank bearing failure. Jug cracked, piston broken, but fortunately case not cracked. Trying to focus on the positive. Looks like I will be installing upper and lower rebuild/big bore/stroker kit on it as well. Going to be a busy and expensive winter!
    New subscriber and look forward to following along with your build while I do my two. Already purchased some goodies for Warrior that are going on too; like oil cooler and new shifter. Already put new Banshee front shocks and 300ex rear on Warrior; makes it sit and handle better for 50yo, 6ft, 240lb man than factory. Never thought I would be so excited to put 300ex shock on anything let alone improve rideability without breaking the bank.
    Been out of quad scene for about 25yrs. Built big bore/stroker, 411cc, 1985 Honda 350x engine in 1999 that I put in 300ex I had. Took swingarm off 350x (little longer), put front wheels on backwards (little wider), and Works shocks all around. Smoked stock 400ex back then with extra gear (350x was 6spd). I was just physically too big at 6ft/220lbs for 300ex frame. Hoping for similar performance out of my 2004 Warrior once it is finished. Warrior fits my body type much better than 300ex; especially now after minimal modifications.

      That's just what comes along with these older bikes bro. I have other videos splitting and rebuilding 400ex bottom ends that should be very helpful for you

      @@garagemcmatt measured piston on 400. 440 Franken kit of some sort in it already. For 440 she must have been tightening up since I purchased in April. Based on previous Honda ATVs I have owned, this should have performed better than it did as a 440. Or, stock starter just struggled with higher compression piston.
      Anyhow, thought I would be catching up with my Warrior 400 rebuild. In light of new info and 465 kit going on 400ex I will still get smoked in the open by my boy! Thanks again for video, comment, and info.

      While I'm waiting for parts, bought winch and light bar for my 1998 Kawasaki Prairie! Put new tires on the old girl this spring; finally replaced factory, Dunlop, bologna skins! Always tell friends and family they picked the wrong 400 when they choose the Honda 400ex over the Kawasaki 400 Prairie! And she at least isn't blown up!
      These new mega quads with independent suspension and 4wd (Can Ams, King quads, etc.) make trail riding challenging when they are rutted up and the old Prairie is stuck from high centering with live rear axle! Wading through mud and water with come along was getting old to drag her out! Can't throw this machine around by hand like the Warrior and 400ex. Bring it into 21st century with an electric winch and handle bar mounted LED light bar! The Prairie 400 May not be a sport quad but she is reliable; and still running at this point. Happy new year!

    Ever run a crf450r timing chain? Thats what i run in my stroker 440 build and its pretty much bullet proof. It didnt require any mods. It fits in the stock guides but its 2 full plates wider per link.

      @@garagemcmatt also just a heads up. The hotrods cranks right out of the box are at or above the service limit out of true. I shipped mine out to crankworks to be balanced and trued. Had to have mine balanced for my custom 87mm stroker piston. I stroked the 416 bore for reliability. With your 465 build you will be needing a minimum of a 39mm carb. It will benifit greatly from a 41 or 42mm though. The stock 400ex carb will be incapable of properly fueling it. I tried with my build and had a 230 main and a 60 pilot and still couldnt keep it from being scary lean.

      @garagemcmatt  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@brentpfeiffer4043 I'm going to true the crank myself. I was looking at a 39mm fcr or a lectron, I'm not sure which way I'm gunna go with the carb yet tho

    • @brentpfeiffer4043
      @brentpfeiffer4043 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@garagemcmatt Great idea! My research confirmed that hotrods doesnt make a bad product. Most of the early failures were from being shipped not secure enough. When crankworks sent me my crank back it was like chissling a fossil out of rock. It was wrapped and spray foamed and wrapped and spray foamed and inside a box full of packing peanuts. Wrapped that in bubble wrap and in a second box lol. They made absolutely sure it could be used as a football and not hurt anything. I measured mine at .010 out of the box. Had crankworks confirm my findings. They measure it at closer to .009. But the factory service limit was like .007 or .005 something of that nature. (Its been 2 years since my build). When i got it back from crank works it was at .002! Keep up the good content man! Bringing back the 400ex for sure! Here i thought i was the only one crazy enough to drop that kind money on one lol
