A former Ford employee (their ex-test driver) once told me this story. After Montreal debuted, he and his colleagues from AMC, GM and Chrysler traveled to England. There they tested the Montreal, Stratos, 512, Countach and several British cars, plus the Swiss Monteverdi and the French Alpine. The verdict was not encouraging. All these cars could spelled the end of the Mustang, Camaro, Corvette and all American legends. So when they returned to the States, they called in Nader and a group of corrupt officials and senators. Who threw a tantrum called “non-compliance with standards”
