    I was on a dive recently, and there were several new divers going out to do open water check dives. Once we got to the dive site and everyone was ready to get wet, one by one the students jumped into the water. Around the 4th or 5th diver in the water I noticed one of the students a few yards from the boat trying to get a hold on his cylinder and reg, which was floating about two feet away from him....... seems he forgot to check his tank strap before diving in and was now near panic as he watched his life support taunting him from 2ft away.

    Commercial Diver here. Technically pure O2 is toxic at 30 feet, but for short periods of time. If I remember right, around 45 minutes. We use it for decompression if we are surface supplied, we can change the gas mix if we are operating off of gas flasks. O2 is also used to 60 feet of pressure in a hyperbaric chamber for treating DCS and AGE.

    I'm a Norwegian, and in Norway, we do dry suit diving pretty much all year-round. One way of telling if someone's a newbie: They surface with their legs first. This can look quite funny, because having so much air in your feet makes them fall off your actual feet, so it looks like you've broken your leg :P

    On boat dives, not swimming a bit away from the boat after entering the water and making the OK sign thus creating an accident waiting to happen for you and the next diver jumping in.

    Tunnel vision: the ability of the newbie diver to completely forget their dive buddy while descending to 40 meters chasing that dolphin unicorn they just saw.
    Crocodile Dundee: the newbie diver who carries the biggest knife strapped to the outside of their leg and refers to it as "shark defense".
    Sticky fingers: the newbie diver who feels the need to take home a souvenir and snaps off some coral because "it's so pretty!"

      Let's see if I can oblige :)
      Zoo Keeper: The newbie diver who thinks that loggerhead is the family pet and wants to hug it and love it and squeeze it and pet it...
      Sandstorm: The newbie diver who spends the entire dive on the bottom and kicks up enough silt to blind the rest of the group.
      And a bonus one...
      Selfie: The newbie diver who is so obsessed with staring into their camera lens to get a shot of themselves underwater, they completely miss the dolphin unicorn swimming alongside them.

    i was diving in ras mohamed egypt in one of my first dives i descended with my snorkel in my mouth to 3 meters and the i kept asking my instructor my regulator is not working and he switched it for me😂

  • @21mozzie

    When I first dived, I unconsciously kicked upwards. When I tried to descend, I couldn't sink, no matter how much air I let out of my BCD.

    You still haven't mentioned my favorite newbie mistake. Swimming out on a shore dive with the snorkel in their mouth and they are so excited to go diving they don't switch to their reg. I've had to remind many a newbie of that.

  • @Catty0117
    @Catty0117 ปีที่แล้ว

    One I've seen a lot is forgetting to purge your regulator before removing it from your cylinder, so many o-rings were popped during my open water dives!

  • @ignitionxvi
    @ignitionxvi 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    I think the cylinder 180 degrees comment meant with the valve facing away from the diver, rather than towards, so the reg ends up backwards swinging in from the left. Which would definitely be a newbie mistake.

    Newbie diver waiting peacefully for the dive ladder to clear on the "inside" part of the ladder having the boat hull about to pound his brains out...signs didn't work so instructor grabed him out from his BCD a milli second away from the next trough.

  • @Rabbitone1000
    @Rabbitone1000 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Good video. However, I would add some more critical mistakes:
    1) Not assigning a buddy for the dive.
    2) Not checking the fitness of your mask to your face.
    3) For men, diving unshaved at least at the nose/upper lip area.
    4) Not practicing enough clearing water from the mask. This is critical, as water in the mask is a major cause for panics.
    5) Not pumping enough through the first 10 meters of descent this is when the pressure in the ears is most felt. Personally, I exhale through the mask during the descent. It is a like a contact pumping that reduces the need to pump to almost none.
    6) Too much weight that is a major cause of all type of consequences such as too fast descent, increased pressure in the ears, waste of air and others. If you are stuck with too much weight, inflate your BCD a little to counteract the overweight.

    • @Dudecifer
      @Dudecifer 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s funny, I personally discovered on my last dive that exhaling through the nose helps equalize! I learned that from not shaving and having to clear my mask for the 2 dives that day.... Mask leaked like a sieve with a big old beard and mustache :(

    Once the dive is over, some divers place their gear all over the boat, and leave no space for other divers. Some also sleep after the dive taking all the space with no respect to other. (My name Ibrahim)

    I have got one that nobody mentioned and I have to confess that I made this mistake twice. When assessing, a diver needs to let some air out of the BCD which I tried to do to no avail because I forgot to put the BCD deflator in the upright position and shoot to the surface without the safety stop. Ops!

    #9. Family being well above average greatly lowers your learning curve. Your dad being a pro diver will lower your learning curve. Everything from opportunity to dive, hereditary traits, and a human encyclopedia to pull answers from are all at your disposal. Not to mention his friends who are always around talking to him about diving. Most stories aren't good stories. Usually major mess ups that you don't have to learn the hard way. This is why pro athletes have children that become pro athletes.

    Nice series of videos which, I think, after part 22, we would probably have covered the subject!!
    - Once back at the ladder of the boat once you take of one fin off, don't let go the ladder. It will make it hard to swim back especially with some current...
    - The same way that on your last tip of Part 2, there are the divers that completely forget their weights! Back to pre-dive safety check
    - The "Where is my..." diver. Instead of constantly looking for your stuff, keep control of your ALL your gears location and close together. It will be much easier to locate, I swear!
    - Forgetting your computer of failing to ask/rent one. Especially at the beginning of your diving career, you need one computer per diver rather than one for the whole group...
    - Inflating your BCD to ascend to the surface... would be the best way to make your responsible instructor very very nervous! As I recommend to my students: "Fin your way up and deflate your BCD by small bursts to prevent the air expansion in the bladder"
    - At the moment of disassembling gears, not putting the dust cap on the first stage and, obviously, putting the whole reg in fresh water!!! AAAARRRGGGG!!!!!
    - That diver who forget that in speedboat, there is "speed" and OFF goes the hat!!!!
    I'll be back once you have done part 3 with some more...

    "Never swim against the current"? If the current isn't super strong a lot of divers will swim against it at the bottom for their first part of the dive, then it's easier to get back to the boat or where you began at the end. I just finished my open water diver course and that's what they taught us anyway. Thoughts?

  • @MrSur4k1
    @MrSur4k1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    After telling your divers for the 3rd time not to put their mask on the forehead, it falls off and is gone. But hey, it's their equipment...
    Or before going on the boat, you ask them several times if they get seasick. Of course they don't and throw up in the surface interval.

    So diving is something I've always been interestered in since I was little, if i go to some place that does rentals and junk will I need to get certified? Cause if i enjoy it as much as im interested in it I plan on going to a school to be a commercial diver and they give certifications as well. I apologize if this is a commonly known question

    • @vdlcinc
      @vdlcinc 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      without being certified, you are limited to shallow dives. it's like deciding if you want to be a race car driver by going to the carnival and riding the bumper cars. for example, you won't know anything about buoyancy control, safety stops, and many other aspects of diving. if you are that interested, get your open water certification, that will allow you to dive... you won't regret it. if you end up being a commercial diver you will need additional certifications anyway.

    • @gabi7332
      @gabi7332 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Always get certified! you'll enjoy diving so much more if you are confident in your skills and are safe. also, once you go to less sketchy dive shops, they won't let you borrow gear or let you take more advanced qualifications if you haven't got your OW

    Here's some tips for everyone- avoid diving deep on air until you've assessed your tolerance to nitrogen narcosis (with an experienced and dedicated buddy). Figure out your ideal weight requirement before going out on the real dive. You should be slightly negative. When beginning your descent, kick on the surface while you dump your entire BC, then descend. When you reach your depth, you can bump your power inflator a touch to get neutral. Enjoy avoiding 30 minutes of work cleaning the seawater out of your bladder. Purge and breathe all second stages before entering the water. Don't dive alone. Stay with your buddy. I could go on for days. Any questions, ask away!

      This might be too late but I dive in a 7mm in 17-18°C water comfortably. If you are diving in winter, you might want something thicker as you always want to be warmer over colder. Also, don't be afraid to check out 2 piece wetsuits that are mostly targeted to spearfishers because they allow you to double up on your core whilst still having movement in your arms and legs on the boat. If you dive in summer though, go for something thinner! It will save you money and allow for a much more comfortable wetty.

    In taiwan some divers don't know how to swim and they get their PADI certificate... WT#@!

      That’s PADI instructors breaking the rules. PADI requires the student to be able to swim unaided.

      As Yggdrasil42 said the PADIOW student is require to swim 200m or snorkel for 300m AND perform a 10mn float in water too deep to stand.

    #1 Rule for open water diving!!!!! Leave your mask on your face, regulator in your mouth until on the dive platform or boat. Many drownings occur at the surface when a diver with their mask on their forehead, regulator floating behind them get hit in the face with a wave, or kicked by another diver!
