    Im not a railroader so I am only asking for curious reasons but if the gates came down why did they have to use a flare at the road?

      likely because a lot of people tend to jump the crossing. also i know this comment is years old lol

    Those road flares! When we were kids the local here would light them just for a short train to cross the road. After the train went by we would go pick the flare, looked like a stick of dynamite LOL

    +Millenniumforce *Seems there was a bit of confusion around that just-replaced switch.* At Time 3:12, the CSX foreman tripped the gates and wigwag via manual override, and the Amtrak brakeman still dismounted and tossed two lit fusees, remounting as the locomotive reached the points.

    • @smokyp17
      @smokyp17 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No the 2 workers got killed because of miscommunication during a shift change. With watchmen protection shit still happens when trains are doing 125mph. CSX has no safety rules for that, plus the train engineers are required to blow their horns when passing a work group.

    • @25mfd
      @25mfd 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      All railroads have what's called "Form B protection" for these types of track work situations. All trains running on the affected subdivision will have a copy of that form B when they go on duty. They also have yellow/red boards trackside, two miles from the work area. Two miles out, the train calls the foreman in charge of that form B and asks for permission to enter those working limits. If granted, the train is allowed to go through. The foreman also tells the train at what speed they can come through and any other special instructions. Such as extra whistle at the crossing or whatever. The foreman can grant the train permission for maximum authorized speed or as little as 10 mph through the working limits. These form Bs are the one area where guys get into BIG trouble. Train and track crews must be DILIGENT at ALL TIMES.

    • @smokyp17

      That would be the air drier opening up momentarily to purge condensing water (from humidity in the air) out of the air reservoirs. When air is compressed it heats up and turns humidity in the air into a liquid which can reek havoc on an air brake system. Hence why air driers are common on locomotives, semi trucks, and basically anything that uses big volumes of air in it’s air braking system. It’s hard to tell in the camera angel but it did spray out just ahead of the workers. Had it not it would have been nothing more then a blast of water vapor which given the heat of the day they were in probably would have felt good. Most units blast the water vapor downwards. It was odd seeing a unit blasting it out sideways.

      When Amtrak is required to manually flag a crossing, such as what was demonstrated in this video, road flairs are used regardless of if the crossing has active protection or not. Doesn't make much sense I know but we do what the rules we are given states for us to do. Not what we think makes sense.

  • @trainboy4024
    @trainboy4024 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    For people who don't work for the railroad, every morning or evening or whatever time we workers come on duty, we are issued track bulletins. It tells us where to stop, slow orders, what needs to be flagged, and special instructions. This video show what we call train coordination where the train is within the working limits of MOW, which has the priority over that section of track. It is dumb for who actually doesn't understand what's going on to call railroad employees idiots, when they are keeping the track maintained so trains can actually run. Millenniumforce, I like some of your videos, but please ask what's going on before making a title like this.

    Why did the Amtrak conductor put out fusees when the gates were already lowered by the track worker and he had his red flag? When we did work on track under load, the trains would request permission to pass from the crew foreman and were allowed to proceed at restricted speed through the work zone. The conductor would flag the crossings with a red flag, but I never saw one use fusees like in this video.

      What is OSHA?

    • @Henry5623
      @Henry5623 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      OSHA has good ideas for impractical situations. Hence why it takes crews twice as long to do something today as it would have a generation ago. Yes you could argue things are "safer" but having worked for UP for over 18 years now I'd argue things are no safer now then they were in the 80's. If anything the constantly changing rules and unforgiving nature of the consequences for rule infractions cause you to be more paranoid and fearful of breaking a rule and getting suspended or terminated as a result rather then working safer. As a consequence efficiency gets slowed down and then the industry starts looking for ways to do more with less to pick up the slack. Which leads us to the PTC era of railroading we are current in. As a consequence it leads to even higher stress levels for those of us lucky enough to still be employed in a industry that is more focused on cost reduction and reducing liabilities then it is securing it's long term survival or the employment of the employees who sacrifice so much for this industry. In short OSHA has good ideas for impractical solutions. You can't be perfectly safe yet perfectly efficient yet that's what we are forced to try to do.

  • @Cornfed_Off-road

    Wow, you must assume that those workers didn't know exactly when that train was coming thru, I assure you that their radio dispatch tells the train exactly how fast, how far and for how many hours they can travel along with any possible delays, heck even the train axels are monitored for heat, so ya, the train didn't chase anyone. Not only that but Amtrak travels on bnsf, csx or union Pacific tracks and because of that Amtrak is regularly late because the track owners will take president thus stopping anyone using the tracks including to make repairs..

    No wonder trains don't run on time in the US. Passenger trains wait for freight trains and now this. Never happen in Europe where the trains are on time right to the minute!

    What a stupid system ! The level crossing should protect both road traffic as well as the trains.
    Here we see the track maintenance machines crossing the road without any warning to oncoming cars except a weak anaemic beep! Highly dangerous. At least a lookout is to be posted with a red flag to warn road traffic.

    There should be some sort of communication between workers and train dispatcher.
    Are this workers blind and got plugged ears or they just ignoring the train?

    • @Henry5623
      @Henry5623 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Dispatch was fully aware a track gang was issued authority to be working in the area. Consequently every train crew operating through that particular area would have advanced warning of what mile post the track gang would be working at. On top of that a slow order was issued for any rail traffic in that particular area; hence why Amtrak approached and left so slowly. Not to mention they had to stop and manually flag the crossing anyway. The workers not only knew the train was coming long before it got there but also knew it would have to stop well short of them to flag the crossing. No one’s safety was at risk hence why the workers didn’t clear the area any sooner then they did. Hopefully that clarifies things a bit.

    Those workers should have signaled with there hands acknowledging the approaching train. This is simply ignorant and dangerous.
