    24x14 is my favorite kick size. Great low end and excellent punch. Going deeper only gets woofy

      All kicks should be 14” deep, unless they’re smaller than 18”

    I just finished my day watching our 3 year old grandson, which my wife and I do 3 days a week. I hurried home to watch this unboxing, as I saw it was in my que this morning, but I didn’t have time to watch it until tonight.
    How fun and exciting that must be, finally getting a new kit after such a long wait. I went through this wonderful experience back in 1965 when I got a brand new Slingerland set that I bought with my saved up paper route money. That was a once in a lifetime experience, and I sure wish I could remember it better. Since then I have gotten 2 other sets, but both were used, but it was still exciting.
    Thank you for sharing this momentous occasion with all of us and take care, Mike.

      That’s the best part: He had the exact sizes and finish I wanted (satin walnut) in stock! I was going to order them from another shop, which was quoted as 6-8 months. But, I was perusing Reverb one Saturday morning and there they were. I had them by the next Friday.

    The kit is beautiful and the excitement is palpable (and that logo is soooo retro cool!).
    Regarding the narrative starting around 4:15, in response to a recent video from Mapex at the 2024 NAMM show, I commented on one of their Saturn kits and mentioned I thought it was very nice but I'd made a firm decision to only consider kits where the toms mount directly on the kick drum. One of the marketing managers at Mapex responded personally and said that they are rethinking the virgin bass drum approach as so many people have told them they prefer their toms mounted on the kick. Just my two cents.

    Gretsch manufacturing and distribution are now owned by GEWA as of last week for those who don’t know.

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm aware, hopefully they can put in some practices and procedures to help with the efficiency of custom orders, but I suspect their influence will be greater one the mass produced import lines.

    • @rkaylor5769
      @rkaylor5769 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    • @malonedrum

      @@rkaylor5769 are you sure Hal Leonard is continuing their distribution? I asked an industry person last week and they said they weren’t sure about that side of it. Hopefully GEWA can help improve efficiency on any side of it.

      @@malonedrum It stands to reason Roland would dump Gretsch. They only wanted DW. That’s fine by me given Gretsch’s heritage. When Roland acquired DW, Gretsch was the one that concerned me because DW is moving in an entirely different direction, but Gretsch lives off their old-school legacy. Sonor, Gretsch, and Ludwig’s bread and butter…

    Great video, Mike! Though I moved from Green Bay to New England in 1985 when I was 18, I am still a huge Packer fan. I also happen to have bought a new Broadkaster kit 5 years ago (22/12/16/ 6.5X14). It's the 135th Anniversary kit in Dark Emerald lacquer over ribbon mahogany. That makes Corey's the 2nd most beautiful Broadkaster kit I have seen. That 49ers game was great a disappointment as the rest of the season was a welcomed surprise. Can't wait for next season!

    My heart sank watching the pillow go into the bass drum and hearing "after getting the kick muffled ..." After attending a Keith Carlock clinic, I'll never muffle a kick again. Imagine getting a near $1,000 bass drum and not letting it ring. (No criticism, just observation).

    • @malonedrum
      @malonedrum  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I love Keith’s sound, but I wouldn’t call it universal. I have nothing against muffling a kick, no matter the price.

      Small staff at the Gretsch USA factory, supply chain issues, and overwhelming interests is what I'd guess. It's very typical for Gretsch lately on custom ordered kits. It's not ideal, but it's not really their fault.

      Ha, we'll he gave them to me before the first playoff game, so none there, and the last 2 minutes of the final game was testing me, but overall if you told me I'd get to watch this young team with a first year starting QB make it to the playoffs and play 7 excellent quarters of football against the two top teams in the NFC, I'd be quite happy.
