Hello Brent, Glad to see your content non-stop for the past 2 weeks... Im a Brazilian marine, currently off duty, i was serving in the SOF (OpEsp) as your country designates and have done some interexchange with you guys in FL, by Miami, dont remember what the unit was. With great pleasure if you Desire i can send you one of our combat uniforms, the one we use here, and as you may be aware are controlled by the Government here. It is made for the coast line usage and river banks, aswell heavy jungle. It is made of a lighter color and a different pattern than what our army uses. Stay safe.
@@Brent0331 Very different, we have 3 patterns, one for the army, that you made the video, one for the Air force, that is a lighly blue camouflage and the navy one. We, marines, are not separated from the navy, its a special branch inside It, for economical reasons, If we were separated like the US, we wouldnt have the funds to self mantain, as the defense budget is not a priority here. And the navy camouflage is only used by the marines, (CFN), we are 12.000 only, the army is 400 hundred +. And the navy itself utilizes the solid blue, for the Sea operations and land bases.
hey dude, didn't get a chance to say this in person but it was real dope watching you do you're thing in the field during the spring semester thanks for pushing us and imparting some warrior wisdom to the team. hope to catch you next spring Starbucks
Thanks brother, it was an absolutely pleasure to train with you hard chargers. Unfortunately I wont be able to make the spring semester due to military commitments. Next year for sure!
this is an awesome overview of field gear and kit. I've shared this with friends in hopes they will benefit from the wealth of information presented here. this is also very affordable, no crye $300 pants (not that there's anything wrong with crye $300 pants) but the goal is to get as many civilians training and this equipment rider is very low cost and accessible. thanks brent0331 for posting and keep up the good work! one shepherd looks awesome btw one day plan to attend.
I was in the army for five years (infantry and got out in 2010) and this actually looks fun. Just not financially sensible for me unfortunately. I miss shit like this honestly.
I hear you brother, that's why I go. The FTX is the biggest driving force for me to come to these events, there is nothing like force on force against real opposition fighting at real combat engagement ranges.
Damn, SonoftheDawn. 'Cause One Shepherd really likes to tap into the experience of our veterans! I do understand the issue of costs. It's always going to be a problem, too! All I can say to that is (1) life is one continuous expense, but well worth it; and (2) One Shepherd is an all-volunteer nonprofit school, so you're never going to find this quality at a lower price. Commercially this training will literally run you x3 times, x5 times, or even more expensive. When you're ready...join us!
@@christopherlarsen7788 I really want to do this. I have all the gear, and uniforms, etc. WV isn't that far from me really. Could make it in 2 days. Are most people there ex military? Or is it a good mix?
@@vermontvermont9292 - Just an FYI...the drive all the way north from Burlington, VT to the BSR facility in WV is just 9 hours. Do-able. Yes. It is a good mix. Roughly 1-in-4 of our Warriors are prior service military veterans. Another 1-in-4 are young Warriors who are preparing to enter military service. The other 50 percent of our Warriors have never served in the military or emergency services, and likely never will. But they also thrive in the One Shepherd Regiment and our Warrior-Leader school. I think you'll find a home here. Join us.
Prior Canadian Forces, the OD rain gear are trash... any sort of sustained rain (not days but hours) they will leak threw and you will be soaked.. however our new cadpat rain gear is legit. I would recommend maybe something else in OD thats quality, or seriously spray it down. Side note I enjoy your channel, and the training at one Shepard looks hella fun.
For the alice pack try getting itw plastic 1in replacement buckles adding them to the pack straps everywhere possible ovinnovations has a kit even OD green!
Thanks. And correct. Tactical Tailor has an ALICE pack overhaul service in which they replace all of the buckles with Fastex buckles, plus reinforce all of the stress points with extra fabric sewn, and add a pull-cord storm flap to the top. I had it done to two Medium ALICE rucksacks and was very pleased with the outcome.
@@christopherlarsen7788 I'm talking about using a wire cutter and cutting off the strap things adding itw replacement buckles or getting the ovinnovations buckle kit DIY stuff!
@@HannibalsSurplusReviews - Ah. Understood. I'm not much of a DIY kind. I tend to royally mess up good gear that way. But I know lots of guys in One Shepherd who truly excel at that sort of skill.
@@HannibalsSurplusReviews - One of these days, right? I have helped with One Shepherd videos. You can hear me in our ALICE Rucksack video on TH-cam. Plus, I'm featured in a couple other One Shepherd videos. I also helped with both of Brent0331 face camouflage videos.
I recently picked up a couple of field jacket liners. Those little buggers are awesome! Got a small in my 65 and a medium that I wear indoors. Looking for one of the desert parka ones with the pockets.
Brent0331 amen! I liked to never found a small. Tons of rothco around but the actual surplus liners are pretty beat up when I find them. Got the 65 jacket and liner keeping me warm in chilly Wyoming atm.
You hero! I was looking through here for this! I'd love these in a Mitchell pattern but thats probably asking too much. For anyone else looking for these. Searching "elastic boot blouser camo" in google brought them up.
These are super helpful videos. I'm coming to 1S for the first time in fall 2021. Any chance you could do a gear video with the ultimate basics of what somebody needs when they're first starting with the two-day Warrior Basics course? I got the field gear rental and know I need uniforms... but I'm sure there's a lot of little things I'll overlook. I don't know what I'm doing, and that's why I want to check out 1S. I'd appreciate your insight. Thanks, man!
Not many manufacturers who make decent gear still make anything in actual OD. It's usually that darker "Ranger Green" color instead. Do they accept that as a substitute insofar as web gear is concerned?
Short Answer - Ranger Green is acceptable. Long Answer - One Shepherd is strict about the uniforms because we’re quite proud of our traditions. However, when it comes to field gear, we are much more relaxed. Our philosophy is that a Warrior must be comfortable in their fighting load, so there is very little standardization. Our principle concern with field gear is “Identification of Friend or Foe.” And for this purpose, ANY SOLID GREEN WORKS - OD Green, Ranger Green, even Foliage Green. Okay?
I love these gear videos. It's great for people who are into surplus gear and the outdoors. I tried looking up the video on insurgent uniform camouflage tests recently but I couldn't find it. Was it deleted?
Outstanding, thank you Sir! I will be attending ASAP. Most of my gear is current issue type in Foliage/ACU or Coyote so I have to purchase a lot of new/old stock. I look forward to meeting you there.
Fun4Sinclair - Heads up. If you want to jump onto the mass uniform order and SAVE $85 (40%) on uniforms, then "reassemble" my TH-cam-friendly email and contact me! Larsen.TCM (at) gmail.com Plus, solid green does the trick, regardless of whether the gear is OD Green, Ranger Green, or even Foliage Green. Yeah, foliage is a bit light, but it will still do in a pinch. Cool?
Going Bananas - Good question. And I realize you've asked Brent, not me. But if you'll allow a "second opinion" I'll offer mine. I have a handful of friends who are hardcore hikers. They'll disappear for a month, two, or even three just walking the Appalachian Trail, or the Sierra Nevada, Rockies, or even the Pyrenees of Spain. The point is that they plan these excursions carefully...and for the most part, they absolutely despise military gear. Why? Well, military gear is way overbuilt. It's heavier and thicker than commercially available hiking gear. The reason is simple - it's because the same rain parka the US Army issues me for the jungles of Panama, I also use in boreal forest of Norway. So, not only is it overbuilt to handle a wide variety of climate zones, but also, it still has to function after I've spilt gun cleaning oil on it, crawled through the mud and stones, and got momentarily caught on concertina razor wire! A packable rain parka for hiking the Sierra Nevada Mountains doesn't need to be anywhere near this durable or resilient. So it can be super light and efficient at what it's meant to do - keep me dry. And if you're thinking, "That's just the rain parka as an example. What about others?" Okay. The exact same engineering applies to rucksacks, sleeping bags, flashlights, cooking utensils, digging tools - virtually every single item a serious backpacking hiker would carry. It's the same. Cool? Military needs don't equate well to civilian camping and hiking needs. Honest.
@@christopherlarsen7788 Ill just want advice, and ill take it from anyone with the knowledge. Im looking for the essentials for being able to spend some time in the wild and just stay away for i while and get away from civilization :D
@@goingbananas - Don't get me wrong...you will definitely see Soldiers and Marines using civilian gear at times, particularly the hardware such as stoves, lights, tools. The civilian stuff is lighter in weight, and that's a very much welcomed attribute! But the other way around is rare. Okay, maybe the novice hiker will use military gear. After all, surplus military gear can be purchased CHEAP! So, the reality is that many campers and hikers start off with military field gear. But over time, they tend to get rid of all of it, once they can afford the lightweight civilian stuff. Yeah?
Brent0031 Who makes your lbv88 I'm looking at a fireforce tactical lbv88 they currently sell an olive drab version. Was wondering if you had any experience with it.
Jay Pease - I've not had any experience with the Fireforce Tactical brand. However...if they follow USGI specs, then their product should be USGI. And I can speak to that because I've used the LBV88 in both Woodland and ODG version, straight pockets and slant pockets. They're solid performers! Again, as long as it is USGI specs, you should be good to go.
6:26 try Crispi Sahara. They are VERY light and comfortable in warm weather 26:46 IMHO better to use trash bags - they are WAY lighter What about thermal vision ? why you prefer "night vision" over "thermal" ? 24:19 IMHO better to use usual tourist backpack with a camouflage cape on top. Thus you combine the comfort when wearing from tourist equipment and at the same time stealth from the cape. Or you can buy TASMANIAN TIGER - Raid Pack MKII (TT 7714) - it does not have metal frame (extra weight)
Thanks for your input, trash bags do work. In regards to thermals they are far more expensive then night vision devices (even NVGs are expensive), took me a couple years to save up for the ones I have. Usually thermals are weapons mounted and not head mounted like these PVS-14s. So even if I had a thermal optic it would be on my weapon while I wore PVS-14s on my head, same way the U.S. military employs NVGs & thermal optics. I appreciate your suggestions, in regards to the pack, for me there have been very few packs that I have found that work well in conjunction with the wearing of web gear. The Alice pack to this day is the only pack I that I have personally hiked with that interferes the least with my gear. I think a lot of that has to do with the design of that aluminum frame (which which practically nothing).
Love the gear lay out vids man. Are you gonna be attached to the OD Green squad or the Woodland Camo squad this time? and will you attempt to do any videoing either in the training phase or the field combat phase?
I will video as much as I can, but probably not as much as last year. I literally had hours of footage last year to put together that 3 part series. As an instructor I'm not going to be able to run the camera quite like that again.
Nice setup! Only thing i would add is a folding saw. Would love to join that training❤ What's with food? Do you bring your own or get somthing to eat there? Greetings, GR🤘
Thanks for that very kind answer! Wow, that sounds amazing!❤ The price is more than fair for all the goodies and stuff... You even get hot showers there? Awesome! Also i am sure its learning on a high class level! Going into class with Brent as instructor would be epic 👍 If i will be over there in the right time of the year i am sure would love to join you! Have a lot of fun over there🤘
Well, Resmed User...depending on exactly where you live in Alabama, you're just about the same distance from the spring semester at the BSR facility in Summit Point, WV as you are from fall semester at the CMTC facility in Ulman, MO. In both cases you should expect a 10 to 12-hour drive. Long? Sure. But the first day of training doesn't begin until Sunday morning. So, you have all day Saturday to drive to the training facility. Plus, the last day of training ends late on Saturday evening a week later. So, you have all day the following Sunday to drive home. See? We did that on purpose for people who had to drive a full day to training. Join us. And hey...bring a friend. It makes the drive a bit easier.
Brent it has the bwc for the 4-28-29 does this mean to be there the morning of 4-28 or the night befor. it would be very helpful to know this on account of travel times. Thanks.
Redbeard - Good question. We prefer you arrive ANY TIME on Saturday, 27 April. We protect the Saturday (27 April) immediately before the training semester as a travel day. Likewise, we protect the Sunday (5 May) immediately after the semester as a travel day. An advanced party will hit the ground Saturday, 27 April to begin setting up tents. If you arrive early, please feel free to join us! But of course, that's not required. YOU MUST SHOW NO LATER THAN 8AM SUNDAY 28 APRIL FOR FORMATION. Cool?
Great video, and a very in depth explanation. But I had a question if we can’t go out and spend the extra money to buy lbv vests, can we come with our plate carriers that we have setup, or specifically for One Shepard they want lbv’ so. Also, my plate carrier is coyote brown can I just spray paint over it to be OD greenish? Thanks
I'm going to try to get some yes, I doubt it will be on the level of what I did last year. I had hours of footage last year to make that 3 part series.
24:47 is my ruck packed up before stepping off for the FTX. My sleeping system was packed inside the ruck inside the WP bag so no need for an additional WP bag for it because it will not be on the outside of the ruck by itself. In my whole career in the Marine Corps as a grunt, I've never needed/used a candle or tea light in the field, that seems like more of a SHTF/roll out piece of gear, I have flash lights and NVGs to see in the dark. I have 550 cord in this video, that is dummy cord.
@@Brent0331 I was in a german airborne unit for almost two years (never deployed) and when i was outside over night and "rested" i used a tealight since basic regulary for heat, food, drink or sometimes to start a fire but you can also "waterproof" your clothes with a candle (never used it to see). Always had at least one (mostly 3) in my pants or jacket. To the end i came up with pocketwarmers and rangerbands but somehow the tealights stayed. The extra rubberised sleeping bag cover is for the case that you are in your bivvy and/or sleeping bag in a alarm or observation post with your boots on so you don`t destroy and/or dirty the bag. I get that you can use 550 cord as dummy cord but people who haven`t done such things don`t know that. I lost a few things in basic (ABC stuff because of the bad pouch) and almost a letherman (fell out of its pocket when exiting a vehicle) before i learned about the small tricks even when i think that the things are secured. I like your stuff and am always willing to learn.
Do you know about the polartec USMC 100 pullover jacket or the ECWCS GEN III silkweight/ USMC silkweight long johns available in coyote??? Also condor outdoor has a OD heavy weight tactical fleece jacket!
They are putting a bulk order in through the organization if your attending the semester, something like $120 dollars for a whole set (top, bottom & boonie). If you're attending the semester I would try to get in on that, email them through the web site to get the details. I acquired all of my stuff through Ebay, both new and used and got great deals on all of it.

Hi Brent0331, I have two questions about your gear. 1. Is it not problematic to have an unmarked Medkit if someone else needs to work on you and they need to find it? 2. Any benefits of using the Esbit stove compared to a small gasburner, other than size?
@@Brent0331 My bad, did not see the medical emblem! In my unit (not US) we need to have it in our left lower pant pocket if unmarked. If we do have a pouch, it must be clearly marked and on the front side of the body.
Man, the force on force during the FTX is just a blast. Obviously if you breeze through my channel you'll see that military oriented training is my passion. They have a saying up there at 1S, and that is "1S is all the fun shit and none of the dumb shit". If you have served in the military and partaken in any type of formal military training you'll know exactly what that means. I have fun going up there.
@@Brent0331 - That's the same reason so many vets keep coming back. Plus, as SonoftheDawn said, veterans add an element of gravitas to the One Shepherd Regiment by imparting their knowledge and experience to the civilians of our program. Just good stuff!
USGI Woodland (ECWCS) parkas are easily found online. Often the best sales are on eBay. But at any rate, they are plentiful! The OD green parka is a bit more difficult. I guess I was kind of expecting you to go with a Primary Arms optic, are there some rules on optics so it can be fair or they allow whatever is similar to actual issue optics?
That TA-31 has a ACSS Aurora reticle in it. Its the ACSS that im all about, PA puts the ACSS in a lot of their optics that's why I use them. However, I've said time and again that ACOGs with ACSS reticles are my primary go to. There's no rules on optics that I'm aware of, one guy had a thermal last semester.
Not exactly like a U.S. woodland environment but Panama, Grenada, there's been operations in the Philippines against jihadists there, parts of northern Afghanistan in the mountains are very woodland like in areas.

Where's that waterproof camo tarp though? lol don't leave home without it. For boots I'd recommend ones with stitched soles. Those won't come off as easily. I recommend the Irish setter ELK TRACKER Style 880 Men's 12-inch Waterproof Leather and Insulated Boot. They have Memory foam, steel shank etc. I wear them everywhere I go. Just go larger on the size chart rather than smaller. According to their size chart I was A 9.5 even though I wear 10.5 or 11 on every other brand I buy. I shoulda stayed with a 10.5 as the 9.5 were initially too small. Oh yeah and goodluck with the airlines, let us know if you need bailing out of the cavity exam after they charge like 250 dollars for the luggage. lol Wish I was there.
@@TheBKnight3 I shoulda had something like that to avoid all the lost footage in the field. But.. I would look into something cheaper. Western digital makes one and same with Seagate. Just glancing at it the gnaarbox is 250gb for $399 and the western digital is 500gb for $270. If you go with a HDD instead of ssd it'll be even cheaper.
@@Brent0331 I initially had planned for June Semester, but it seems that I'll have to stick with Fall this year. Doesn't mean I can't look for bargains, just snagged an auction for a used gnarbox yesterday.

Brent, I'm a former Army Guard 13B Field Artillery Cannon Crewman, 19E Armor Vehicle Crewman and 44B Metal Crafter. I'm 56. What age range does 1 Shepherd cut off their training at?
There is not really a set age limit as far as I know, I'm 53, well past my prime and I was able to train there the last 2 semesters, you definitively need to be in some sort of OK shape but don't need to be a body builder or something like that. BTW, I wasn't te only one in the 50's either. Come down to train with us! You will love it!
Just like he said, I don't know if there's a cut off but there are plenty of guys in their their 50s that have trained out there over the past two semesters I've been there.
No cut off age, Douglas. Which side of the sod are you on - the topside or the below side? Hey, if you're still on the right side of the sod, then join us! One Shepherd always welcomes vets such as yourself.
dang 1 state away from there and kid needs me here still got combat rifle but hey, family first daddy has to make sure his kid is fine. then also those who are my support of adopted parents helping since kids mom is not help. thanks to all service members out there and god bless.
The TRU has an ACU cut to it. The two uniforms used at 1S are the woodland and OD uniforms (woodland for BLUFOR and OD for OPFOR). Think of this more of a formal organization and learning institution as opposed to lets say a big air soft event where people show up wearing all different types of uniforms and gear.
@@eveliinatistelgren172 - ACU is allowed. And some of our Warriors use the Velcro-backed One Shepherd tape and name tapes. It's all good as long as it's the right color and in the right place. As Brent said, even the ODG has a wide variation of shades. Nothing to be done about that - it's just different manufacturers. Also, the TRU is Tru-Spec's commercial name for ACU. Just like the Tac-U is Propper's commercial name for the ACU. So...ACU, TRU, Tac-U...all the same. Yeah?

Hello Brent, Glad to see your content non-stop for the past 2 weeks... Im a Brazilian marine, currently off duty, i was serving in the SOF (OpEsp) as your country designates and have done some interexchange with you guys in FL, by Miami, dont remember what the unit was. With great pleasure if you Desire i can send you one of our combat uniforms, the one we use here, and as you may be aware are controlled by the Government here. It is made for the coast line usage and river banks, aswell heavy jungle. It is made of a lighter color and a different pattern than what our army uses. Stay safe.
Awesome brother, thanks for reaching out. Is the pattern different then that of the Brazilian lizard I featured in a different video?

The secret of the silkies and the jacket liner is out. Waiting for a price hike now. Thanks man.

I replace my boot laces with 550 cord. You're a good guy to learn from. Thnx
Thanks brother.
OUTSTANDING TUTORIAL Sir !!
Semper Fidelis
Thanks brother.
this is an awesome overview of field gear and kit. I've shared this with friends in hopes they will benefit from the wealth of information presented here. this is also very affordable, no crye $300 pants (not that there's anything wrong with crye $300 pants) but the goal is to get as many civilians training and this equipment rider is very low cost and accessible. thanks brent0331 for posting and keep up the good work! one shepherd looks awesome btw one day plan to attend.
grenade pouches are also great for stowing your shooting gloves or a your headlamp and a bandanna.

@@christopherlarsen7788 well I think I just might then.
Prior Canadian Forces, the OD rain gear are trash... any sort of sustained rain (not days but hours) they will leak threw and you will be soaked.. however our new cadpat rain gear is legit. I would recommend maybe something else in OD thats quality, or seriously spray it down.
Side note I enjoy your channel, and the training at one Shepard looks hella fun.
always love seeing your loadout!

They're great, get them while you can!
Brent0331 amen! I liked to never found a small. Tons of rothco around but the actual surplus liners are pretty beat up when I find them. Got the 65 jacket and liner keeping me warm in chilly Wyoming atm.
Those camo elastic velcro band are 1990's boot blousers
Appreciate your service, Semper Fi.
Thanks brother.
Not many manufacturers who make decent gear still make anything in actual OD. It's usually that darker "Ranger Green" color instead. Do they accept that as a substitute insofar as web gear is concerned?
Yes they do.
Are you talking about the desert camouflage effectiveness video? That one features a Taliban outfit in it.
@@Brent0331 Yup, that is the one, thanks.
I mistakenly remembered it as a separate video.
Any plans on testing out solid grey colors by the way?
@@BlackMetalVengeance Not currently, there seems to be a never ending list of things to film.

Great video - a good reminder for what to bring into the field. Are folks able to ship gear to One Shepherd prior to the exercise?
I believe so, I want to say some guys did that last semester I'm not 100% sure on that though. I would email them through the website to find out.

Larsen.TCM (at) gmail.com
Plus, solid green does the trick, regardless of whether the gear is OD Green, Ranger Green, or even Foliage Green. Yeah, foliage is a bit light, but it will still do in a pinch. Cool?
Bernt have you made any video with good gear for camping and the essentials that can be good to bring on that kind of adventure?
Yeah?
I haven't brother. Regular hiking, camping is really something I dont really do outside of the military. Dr. Larson's comment is spot on.
Brent0031
Who makes your lbv88 I'm looking at a fireforce tactical lbv88 they currently sell an olive drab version.
They are VERY light and comfortable in warm weather
26:46 IMHO better to use trash bags - they are WAY lighter
What about thermal vision ? why you prefer "night vision" over "thermal" ?
Hell yes been waiting for another review like this!!
Hope I didn't disappoint.
@19:45 what is the radio in use there? have you done a video on that piece of equipment? Is it provided by one shepherd or is it personal item?

Love the gear lay out vids man. Are you gonna be attached to the OD Green squad or the Woodland Camo squad this time? and will you attempt to do any videoing either in the training phase or the field combat phase?
I will video as much as I can, but probably not as much as last year. I literally had hours of footage last year to put together that 3 part series. As an instructor I'm not going to be able to run the camera quite like that again.
I added mine to bullpup frame and hand specked camo pattern which mix to my other stuff.
Cool brother.

I wished there was shepherd one in Alabama. I wonder if ppl shown up with bdus and Adidas shoes

No extra rubberised sleeping bag cover for the bivy bag/boots?
The same with candle or tealights and dumee cords.
@@Brent0331
I was in a german airborne unit for almost two years (never deployed) and when i was outside over night and "rested" i used a tealight since basic regulary for heat, food, drink or sometimes to start a fire but you can also "waterproof" your clothes with a candle (never used it to see).

1. Is it not problematic to have an unmarked Medkit if someone else needs to work on you and they need to find it?
2. Any benefits of using the Esbit stove compared to a small gasburner, other than size?
That medic kit is marked with a medical emblem on it. Only benefit I can think it the size and weight. The Esbit style takes up hardly any room.
@@Brent0331 My bad, did not see the medical emblem! In my unit (not US) we need to have it in our left lower pant pocket if unmarked. If we do have a pouch, it must be clearly marked and on the front side of the body.

We do, too, brother. We do, too.
Join us when you can. One Shepherd will be here.
Darn good information video. Why, though, would a 17 year Marine go to Shepherd 1 training? Consider UPS-ing your gear. Best

Man, the force on force during the FTX is just a blast. Obviously if you breeze through my channel you'll see that military oriented training is my passion. They have a saying up there at 1S, and that is "1S is all the fun shit and none of the dumb shit". USGI Woodland (ECWCS) parkas are easily found online. Often the best sales are on eBay. But at any rate, they are plentiful! The OD green parka is a bit more difficult.
@@Brent0331 If it's just so everyone is the same then it would make sense to adopt a uniform with nametapes. (ACU)
Yeah?
Interesting video
Thanks
