When OG Canadian John Candy as Uncle Buck's freeze-framed at the very last with his wave to his niece, John Hughes really captured his fare-thee-well to us all...👋🥹
You know he’s a good guy straight from the beginning bc he literally drops everything and heads over at 2am to help his brother, who he obviously isn’t close with. Uncle Buck is awesome 🩷🩷
This was my grandpa's favorite movie. When he was dying in the hospital, they had him in a dark room and everything was stale. My mom rented a vcr and this movie and put it on for him and his mood changed instantly. He livened up and when from morose and giving up to happy and cheerful. I am thankful to this movie for this.
That end freeze when John Candy waves and smiles always makes me tear up. Such a talented man with such a tormented soul. He's truly missed! Also, Shanice is played by Amy Madigan. She did play Kevin Costner's wife in "Field of Dreams" and she's married to actor Ed Harris in real life.
Ed Harris is a great man and husband. Hollywood wanted him to do salacious roles and he would not do them because he felt it would dishonor his marital vows. Hollywood quit offering him roles after that and he is fine with that. He played John Glenn in The Right Stuff who would not tell his wife to meet on camera with President Johnson because she had agoraphobia. Johnson ordered his staff to tell John Glenn to 'order' his wife to meet with Johnson and he refused. It could have lost his astronaut status but he cared way more about his wife. Who knew he played character roles? Great man.
Uncle Buck was made during a brief period in the late 80s and early 90s where Hollywood was properly utilizing John Candy before he started to slow down before his death.
I'm sure it's been mentioned, but this WAS before Home Alone and was actually the movie that got Macaulay Culkin the Home Alone gig, specifically that "I'm a kid, that's my job" exchange with John Candy. Seeing a kid that young hold his own with comedy great John Candy convinced John Hughes that this kid could headline a movie on his own.
Uncle Buck has one of my all-time favorite endings. The song "Rythm of Life" is used to perfection, and the freeze frame on Candy waving is like him saying goodbye to all of us. Gets me every damn time.
The closet full of junk that comes crashing down is a trope that is _older than television._ It originates with a radio comedy called _Fibber McGee & Molly,_ which had a running gag that Fibber would need to grab one thing before he left, and it was always in the closet, which would always lead to a cascade of sound effects as everything inside crashed down on him.
Uncle Buck, a classic that never gets old! John Candy is one of my favorite all-time actors! There are a few people I remember exactly where I was when I heard they died 😢
This movie is seared into my brain from childhood. I watched it for the first time in years (decades even…I’m old), and I was reciting every line. A great John Hughes comedy.
A few movie facts.....the role of Uncle Buck was originally offered to Danny Devito but he turned it down. Some other big names were considered including, Bill Murray, Rodney Dangerfield and Kurt Russell before they went with Candy. John Hughes recommend Macauley Culkin to director Chris Columbus for "Home Alone" (which Hughes wrote) and he got John Candy to be in that, too. Amy Madigan (Chanice) and Gaby Hoffman (Maizy) were in "Field of Dreams" together, as mother and daughter, which came out the same year as Uncle Buck (1989). Just like "Planes, Trains and Automobiles," the ending still shot is of John Candy smiling at the camera (also directed by John Hughes).
@@brianjensen3047 I'm sure she has already seen Home Alone btw I saw Gremlins in the theater when it first came out and have never watched any of the Home Alone movies, outside a few scenes.
"Aww! Look at him!" 🥰 John Hughes loves a freeze frame on John Candy. Now that he's gone, they feel like tributes to a great comedian who spread a lot of joy.
My sister is having a new baby soon and we all couldn’t be more excited. My parents and sister have told her daughter to call me “Uncle Buck” cuz they know even if I’m a little out there, I’d have no problem cussing out a school official if they disrespect my niece or nephew. John candy was an absolute gift of a human being and I’m so thankful we still have these little time capsules of him.
The scene of him basically threatening to knee cap the boyfriend with a power drill still sticks with me. At least, I'm remembering it as knee caps. Edit: My memory of the film combined the hatchet and power drill scenes.
Uncle Buckle and Planes, Trains & Automobile showed to us that John Candy had so many, many more roles left to do and I think he would've won an Oscar at some point.
3:47 The actress is Jean Louise Kelly. This is her movie debut playing Tia Russell. Her film career would eventually land her to play Sara Kazansky (Iceman's wife) in TopGun: Maverick
Hi Cassie! Re "tweety bird noises"; in old timey cartoons, when a character was knocked out, they would put a flying circle of tweety birds above them making that noise.
The oldest daughter stared in an early 2000 CBS comedy called Yes Dear. If you haven't seen it, you can find some episodes on TH-cam. Funny show. 😂😂😂 *edit* I forgot. I'm pretty sure the girlfriend and the youngest daughter were in Field of Dreams as mother and daughter.
I loved that show! Back during the pandemic, I fell in love with the TV show Snowpiercer, and it has Mike O'Malley (Jimmy) from that show. He's aged a little, lol I'm not sure where the rest of the cast are now.
GREAT MOVIE!!! LETS F'ING GOOOOO!!! :) I grew up on this movie and it was quoted year around in my house! 😂🤣😂🤣😂 We lost a real one with John Candy :( 💔😭
Subscribed to this channel and I can't believe she hasn't reacted to this film. One of my favourite comedies from the 80s and will be looking forward to the reaction.
It’s easy to get distracted by franchises that here supporters are all big fans of. She’s got an enormous list of requests/recommendarions to dig herself out of, so smaller films like this don’t get the votes like another installment of Star Trek 🤷♂️ I’m just glad to see she finally got around to reacting to it
The actress who played Marcy is Laurie Metcalf who played Jackie in the comedy show Roseanne, and Sheldon's mother in The Big Bang Theory. Her real-life daughter plays Sheldon's mother in Young Sheldon. She looks JUST like her mother
I forget that he's gone, he was a one-of-a-kind! Between this Planes Trains Automobiles and his other small roles everywhere he was a grand man love your little lightsaber extra, LOL
You've seen Shanice/Amy Madigan and little Maisie/Gabby Hoffman before. They were both in 'Field of Dreams' with Kevin Costner, in the same year as this film.
My all time favorite of John Hughes movies. I've been a fan of Mr Candy my whole life (I'm 54), he was such a good family Man in real life. No wonder John Hughes wanted him in so many of his movies. RIP John Candy.
Cassie, Buck lives on the North side of Chicago, near Wrigley Field. His brother and family live in a North suburb. (the actual house is in Evanston, IL about 8 miles away). That's why the bowling alley was in such close proximity.
That part when he brings the cat inside but turns around to put it back out then gets locked out by the kids always makes me think of the Flintstones when it happens to Fred. Also, Amy Madigan (Chanice) and Gabe Hoffman (Mazy) acted together in Field of Dreams while McKulkin and one of the school children Anna Chlumsky were in My Girl together.
One of my favorites growing up. This came out before Home Alone. John Hughes got the idea for Home Alone when Miles was interofating Chanice through the mail slot.
I miss John Candy. 😔❤️
It’s a shame he wasn’t alive to see The Cubs Win The World Series

5 years early to boot...
I agree. RIP John Candy. You are deeply missed.
It brings tears to my eyes every single time !
Freeze frame at the end of Planes Trains and Automobiles hits me equally as hard
@Yinzinnati: Yes! John Hughes also immortalized John Candy's smile at end of Planes Trains & Automobiles
...& 2 years before U.B: in 1987!🥹💧

"I loved my father".
I love the "Then why did you move away from him?" line.
I feel the same way about that freeze with John Candy - it's an iconic picture, and reminds me of the talent we lost.

The younger daughter here (Maizy) also played Amy's daughter in Field of Dreams.
Loved John Candy since the beginning of SCTV. R.I.P.

As a Canadian, I can tell you that John Candy was a national treasure! 🇨🇦

I like to think he had the Best Seat🤔

@ he would be sitting next to Bill Murray since he was actually at the Game
one of the best feel good movies of the 80s. So wholesome.
R.I.P John Candy. You'll always be a legend.
This is one of my favorite movies ever. It’s so underrated in John Hughes’ catalog. John Candy was one of a kind.
Fun fact: Macauley Culkin is now older than John candy was when he died
Yes! Another great movie from 1989! There was just something about that year that brought so many great movies.
the ending always makes me tear up john candy will always be my favored actor
I'm so happy you picked Uncle Buck, my favorite John Candy film.
People around my age (50), often lament getting older. I always give one simple reply: I NEVER want to imagine a childhood without John Candy movies
Recognize Uncle Bucks girlfriend she was Annie the wife in “Field of Dreams “ and the little girl is the daughter Karen from “Field of Dreams”!!
That’s how they came up with “ if you call him, he will come”
Crap, I never noticed that was the same little girl.
@@skipskatte That little girl was also in Sleepless in Seatle with Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan
Uncle Buck, a classic that never gets old!

Whenever I think of John Candy, I think of the great outdoors. Which was the first movie I saw him in.❤
Uncle Buck was first. And that scene with the mailbox gave John Hughes the idea for Home Alone. 😃
This movie is seared into my brain from childhood. I watched it for the first time in years (decades even…I’m old), and I was reciting every line. A great John Hughes comedy.
I highly recommend The Great Outdoors and Who’s Harry Crumb? Such amazing John Candy films!!

Me and my dad used to watch this movie all the time when I was a kid, we used to quote it to each other all the time… Good times
This film led to one of the all time Christmas classics being made...Home Alone
True, John Hughes said he got the idea for Home Alone while filming the door mail slot scene.
@@RobertJuzstone this is the all time classic, - Home Alone is overrated. Watch Gremlins instead in December or tons other.
