My heart melted *really early* into this. The second the show was able to reframe "You've Got a Friend In Me" to be from Andy's perspective, I *knew* this was going to be great.
Even though this was 9 years ago this explains the movie really good and is just a cool musical.
The actress who played Sid brought him to life in a way that Pixar didn't. Yes, Sid was menacing in the original but this....she added a touch of punk rock and a little bit of craziness to the roll that made Sid even MORE menacing. And with the part where Sid became a small toy....that was amazing.
He was a stereotype in the movie. In this musical he is a regular troubled kid who attends an art class.

And it has some backstory too; in the play his mom is somewhat verbally abusive towards him, a far cry from her relatively soft-spoken self in the movie. (But even in the movie it’s heavily implied that his dad’s an alcoholic, and there’s even a fan theory that when drunk he may have become violent and to say the least, might have taught sid to destroy toys.)

Everyone else is amazed at this overall production. I'm just impressed with how educated Sid is in classical arts!
The fact that these actors spent eight years on a Disney Cruise Line doing this musical is crazy.
Edit: It turns out I was wrong - the actors did change from time to time. By the time the musical closed in 2016, the show featured an entirely different cast.

This is... pretty good. I'm impressed. The performers are very committed to both the personalities and physicality of the characters, and those puppets are freaking amazing. Wish someone told the girls who played Andy and Sid that "childlike" does not necessarily have to mean "intolerably squeaky", however.

@@jessiahfx6228it would’ve been really careless to ask a kid to tour around on a cruise ship for up to six months. I don’t really know how much knowledge you have of the Disney cruise ships which is where the show was recorded but usually actors cycle between two shows toy story would’ve been the main show of the cruise that was shown one night and they would’ve been a smaller side, one that would’ve been shown on the other night. The people playing Andy in this show could’ve played Mickey Mouse the next day! Just depends on the scheduling. Also it’s out of budget to cast an actual kid for just one show.

And I heard this was going to replace the Aladdin Musical Stage Show in California Adventure back in early 2010s, but they didn't and kept Aladdin Musical for several more years. At least Frozen had the excuse of being a musical and could work with the stage effects

One Toy 22:55 is a underrated song of this musical of my childhood favorite movie It also showcases Woodys inner demons and his jealousy
It's cool that they got Rex, Hamm, and Potato Head's movie VA's to record new lines for this. And Slinky's VA is the actor who voices him from Toy Story 3 onwards, since the original actor passed away.

Oh my god, Hamm and Rex's voices. Seriously, when Hamm said "Hate to break up the staff meeting, but...", that sounded like it was pulled straight from the movie.
Hamm, Rex and Mr. Potato Head have the same voice actor who voiced them in the original movie.
I kmow Hamm’s voice actor reprised his role for this but yeah...that particular line? That WAS lifted right from the movie.

I actually don’t hate this, even if it’s not as good as the original, but it is one of the few that stays very close to the original. Also, I’m surprised that Hamm’s voice is very close, along with Mr Potato Head’s, and Rex’s voice.
They actually used recordings for said characters and Slinky, whilst the face-actor-esque characters stay as live actors.
Hamm potato head and Rex have the ORIGINAL actors in this show

Expensive to reproduce. It’s also only a condensed version of the story. It would need to be massively reworked and expanded for broadway.
I love this portrayal of the character of woody there's so much sinistri in this character especially when he's singing the song one toy just look at his face reminds me of a serial killer

That's nothing, I'd recommend checking out the movie's "Black Friday Reel"- in which Woody's basically Lotso, and *intentionally* defenestrates Buzz. (Even Pixar themselves didn't like it!)
@Brandon Brooks Yeah and I saw a deleted scene that was an early storyboard version of Buzz's welcome wagon in which Bo not-so-subtly hits on him and seductively says "Do I?" when he delivers his line, "You don't want to be in the way when my laser goes off."
I remember seeing this when I was little, and tbh I still hope to this day that Disney would release this for theaters to do productions to do this musical

I think there were like 2-3 people inside the costume 1 controlling the front legs and another controlling the back legs and a third for all the facial features. like the blinking and mouth operating and stuff like that. but your right. its very fascinating.
Raina Pratt One person in Ham, Rex and Mr. Potato, two in Slinky. The front two legs of Slinky also controls the facial. The front and back legs coordinate before the show, and they also have ear pieces listening to the show, and the producer in each ear. Rex and Hamm both have fans inside them, as well as Rex having bounce shoes. Mr. Potato head is just a one man job.

hey uh holy cow this is fantastic. the props!! the set!! the costuming!! all fantastic - plus 'busted' is awesome. it's most obvious with the mutant toys but every single thing in this looks exactly like it did in the movie and that is no small feat. also spider baby head moves way too fast to not be terrifying. 10/10 incredibly impressive puppeteering.
plus! woody's actor is so good at playing the rag-doll - the way he moves really makes the toy aspect come to life, especially in 'you! are! a! toy!'
Now that…Is Singing with Style! A great musical to bring back the days of me watching Toy Story on VHS! I also still have the book!
