Supreme Court Rules NCAA Can't Limit Benefits To Student Athletes
I just feel so bad for the poor NCAA. Whatever will they do if they can’t severely under compensate student athletes?
They'll just have to find another way to fund their vices. Some of them might have to go cold turkey!!
And what will the athletes do when the university no longer offers a free ride to athletes?
@@tmilesffl Universities will continue to offer free rides because the schools will still sit at huge advantage, raking in money from everywhere. The schools will not suffer. Rest your frazzled nerves.
Hey, I know! Take ALL the money out of AMATEUR sports! They get a scholarship, room and board, and that's it!
It's insane. "It's so the schools can compete..." LOL.. Because a second string guard from a mid-west school is somehow going to benefit...
This ISN'T to benefit the players. It's to benefit the NBA, the NFL and that other "amateur" CORPORATION The Olympics...so that they can get "further involved in helping to shape..." their tools...
End it. Like the arms race, part of something we don't need anymore.
@@jbarnhart2653
Except your comment does not address at all the fact that "amateur sports" is a multi-billion dollar cartel run by the NCAA. Do you advocate lowering or eliminating ticket price, tv and media contracts, bowl incentives and other profit centers that the NCAA now owns and regulates?
NCAA must be fuming with anger right now I love it
@hexalone Motivation by GREED
@hexalone Just another example of the rich getting richer and everyone beneath them doing the actual work for peanuts.
@@Lisa-mm6ud not anymore!! Unanimous SCOTUS!
Time to stop the unpaid labor & compensate the athletes for the billions in revenues. A good first step.
The only reason any of these colleges have been able to get as big as they’ve gotten is from sports. Let’s stop acting like these athletes are amateurs when they bring in billions of dollars
It's just one of thousands of "cut-outs' in our laws: They're "student athletes" so we don't have to pay them. They're kids doing summer jobs so we can pay them less than minimum wage, etc., etc. If you're providing goods or services you should be fairly compensated, period.
Yet the coaches get paid millions. That's why the money argument was always bs.
@@commonsense5494 I don’t know of any summer JOB that doesn’t pay you, and if they did you would earn more in 3 months than 4 years of college costs combined. Or any “summer job” you keep putting full-time hours and travel in during a full course load....

I wasn't comparing them. I was pointing out that we have laws that allow certain people or groups to go unpaid or be paid less than minimum wage because reasons.

I'm glad we are taking care of our student players.💯

Yet still have work to do.

Why would the NCAA not want benefits for athletes? If they are profiting from these athletes and games, shouldn’t the athletes at least receive something, too?
Greed.
@@benallmon5613 that’s the only reason I can think of. Not sure why this was even a thing to begin with.
Because it would cut into their profits.
Capitalism.
I would say more graft than greed.
It's normal to feel greedy once in a while. But most people don't make shady business deals to indulge their greed.
As hard as student athletes have to work on and off the field, why can’t they be paid?
I don’t think they should get directly paid though they do get free college.
However, I do believe that the students should be allowed to make money off of their name; sign autographs, promote local businesses, etc.
They should receive a fixed cash stipend. Student athletes can't work a part time job so some reasonable pay rate should be set for all players
@@FAITHandLOGIC actually there not garreteed free college, if the suffer an injury that and lose the ability play (more common that going pro after) the scholarship goes away

"Let us continue to disgustingly exploit these athletes. "
By law and many court cases, if you profit from another's image, name, etc, you have to compensate them for it. NCAA has always been exempt, because they were "STUDENTS". Regardless of the millions the colleges and NCAA make from them that allows them to pay millions to the coaches. Who quickly tank when the. "STUDENTS" loose, because it's not the coaches who actually do the job. The student's risk getting hurt and having their budding careers ended, while the coaches have no such risk. About time NCAA has to obey the laws the rest of the country has to. Barry.
And how many billions have been paid in full scholarships?
I'm rooting for the students and parents here. Families sacrifice so much getting their student athletes to college. It is very difficult keeping them housed an fed even if they are part of team. Most of these students aren't going to be playing professionally after college.
Most of these athletes are on FULL scholarships where they don't pay anything.
@@tmilesffl, But still. Shouldn't they have the right to be compensated for their likeness and earn money outside of sport if they can? It seems ridiculous that everyone else is allowed to earn money off their backs, but they can't even get outside endorsements? That is not very capitalist. That's cronyism.
Good . If athletes are hurt they can still pay for their education this way
I’m for this action but your statement is not true. Once they agree to pay for their education, it’s paid for. Regardless of injuries
@@joedav02 i didn't go to college so i wouldn't know if they do but I've heard that if an athlete gets hurt they get thrown out of school . I don't know if it's true or not .

Awwww. Poor colleges. No more slave athletic labor.
I have watched decisions by the SCOTUS for almost fifty years. The SCOTUS has recently made one good ruling after another.
I agree with their rulings, but am besides myself with surprize for them. Honestly feel proud of them. Amazing!
Go SCOTUS!!
These athletes need payment. Everyone makes $$$$$ off their hard work.
Might as well end their scholarships and give it to players are not so name orientated. Colleges should just stop these sports all together. If they want to be professional sports then let them go professional.

Victory for students 👏👏
As the father of a college student who has had to take out huge loans to get through school - this rankles me! Major college athletes already get FREE TUITION AND ROOM AND BOARD! THEY GET TO GRADUATE WITH NO DEBT!
Where does all the money go if it doesn't go to the athletes?
The former stars of UCLA basketball back in the 90's the O'bannon's were the originators of all this. Sued NCAA several times hoping to get something like this. They are by far the forebearers.
Great!
No how about the musicians, actors, dancers and other college students that also bring notoriety and income to universities?
Crickets...
Agree, but they don't bring the big money, which is more of a sad reflection on our society. Also, fair compensation for student athletes opens the door for other groups of students bringing value and monetary gain to institutions of higher education likewise being fairly compensated.
College athletes spend an incredible amount of time and energy on sports that they could otherwise spend getting paid at a job. They deserve some form of compensation.
They should be able to make some money off their efforts. The schools make a pile of money from their star athletes! It also bring money for recruiting and the exhorbent amounts the coaches are paid!
Fun fact the people in the student shops on campus get payed selling the merch. But the athletes are not getting money.
Reprehensible !! They need college paid and living expenses overed ! Also, a stipend / check monthly ! Thank you !
Nah, the colleges should give them nothing, and drop the useless sports programs.
Most of these colleges make big money from the student athletics. Mostly the football teams supports all the program’s... most of the kids leave without a degree.
Now they’ll only be 5 football teams that people watch.
Great now make them all pay to attend school.
Oh man. I feel for the Student Athletes and the NCAA.
I lived in Baton Rouge in the mid 1980s. LSU basketball coach Dale Brown did zilch to help a player he'd recruited from Eastern Europe when this student lost everything in an apartment building fire. Dale Brown was paid a huge coaching salary. The poor student had to quit LSU and return to Eastern Europe.
This has been the fear of the NCAA for decades.
They will have to share with those who actually performed.
Please let us keep all the money for ourselves.
So the student athlete is no longer a student
THANK GOODNESS Should have happened much sooner.
The students should receive compensation How's the Universities Are getting rich Off of these athletes.
Separate these developing athletes into a “College of Sports” program.
Why? Very few college athletes go on to play sports professionally.
The NCAA is a racket with NFL & NBA too. They should be able to be drafted straight out of High School if they wanted
Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh wrote, ‘Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate.” “It is not evident why college sports should be any different. The NCAA is not above the law."
Good morning and thank you very much.
Student Athletes. their should be a contact for each student.
Hope they go after college football now. They too entertain us. They too need to be adequately compensated.
The NCAA makes most of their money off 2 sports. Football and basketball. Both these sports are heavily based on black men. Most D 1 coaches make millions coaching the players, the schools make hundreds of millions, the NCAA is a billion dollar business. So was the cotton industry with their free labor.
According to some old stats coaches are getting 3x to 10x more that university presidents!!!
Coaches help bring in players that generate revenue. School president what does he do again?
Doesn't the NCAA make $$$ BILLIONS $$$ from college football and basketball in television revenue?
They should just break the sports off into separate club entities outside the the authority of the NCAA.
So much for student athlete… Why don't they reserve the scholarships for an education for students, and just admit that they are hiring an athletic team?
So the students shouldn’t have the rights to their own names considering the schools make billions off of their hard work?
FAITHandLOGIC I think it's fair to say they aren't there to be students. It's just hire an amateur team...
Good!
Took awhile for the NCAA to be put in their place.
Best news for college athletes. They take all the risk and not much of the benefits. Pay them their worth.
Is that guy okay? He blinked like 500 times
I can't believe this was allowed to be the norm
Good to see they get to see a payday🗽
NCAA exploitation of student athletes has persisted for far too long, which has turned me away from college sports. Which is a shame, because there is much good to be found in college athletics, at least where and when it is not allowed to supercede or overshadow the core mission of higher education.
This should’ve been happened !🤝
NCAA doesn't want to do the right thing by compensating athletes at all levels, fk them
Coaches get paid millions and the Universities get billions. I love to watch college games and yes the players should reap some of the benefits. No doubt!
Is there any valid argument whatsoever that justifies adults making millions off the efforts of (and risks taken by) kids who make nothing for their labor?
Another stupid Supreme Court decision.
Anger right now I love it’s
The NCAA are jerks, so I'm happy about this decision, but I'm curious about the "giving them instruments" part. I was a music major in college and no one gave us instruments. We weren't even given storage hardware for digital recording classes. We had to buy our own. 🤔
Recall that the vast majority of the student-athletes get zero compensation for playing college sports. They don’t get free tuition or room/board. They get nothing but the rules still apply to them.
In other words, if you are a Div. 3 field hockey player or a Div 2 weight lifter, you can’t have a job if you want to continue to compete in your sport, for your school.
That makes the NCAA rules even more egregious. I’m not shedding any tears because they lost this case.
It is not just about compensating athletes for their increasing a university's wealth. It is also about the huge risk to their life long term health athletes undertake when they compete at the highest intercollegiate level. These are people who could be crippled for life, long before they can garner any real benefits from their athletic talents and endeavors.
@@lynned.7253 Or perhaps in exchange for a possibility of a lifetime of disabilities.
PAY THOSE KIDS!!!
The ncaa thought that they could keep all the profit while making millions on the players and keep them begging 4 scraps, GOOD DAY 4 ME.

The NCAA makes over a BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR off of students. They made over 150 MILLION DOLLARS off of licensing merchandise which includes jersey sales photos etc etc. The NCAA shouldn’t be allowed to suspend a player for signing autographs and at the same time they are selling that players jersey for $100. The NCAA is only a non profit because they claim that even though they make a BILLION DOLLARS a year they are enhancing student lives and helping them get a better future which is worth more than the money they make. This only flys with the corrupt government we have. In any other country they wouldn’t qualify for being a non profit, not to mention out of that 1 BILLION DOLLARS they are taxed ZERO. So I will forever side with students who make money off of their own name.
Kartman was right.
It seems to me in JUSTICE GORSUCH's writing of the opinion, that there is a foreshadowing of amateur athletes getting compensation for the use of their image, or for promotion of a product. Since these universities and colleges make a TON of $$$ from these athletes, it just seems unjust to not give some of those proceeds to the source.
College rankings are about to get twisted! They know it. At least being athletic as well as educated should be a upper status. Especially if your good at what you do! Let the kids make money and develop a career with their talents. Education holds you back and makes simple things harder. It doesn't glorify the best it glorifies the most obedient to turn in work at specific time. Not so much on the understanding. More about time and money than quality
Good👍🏾
Whoever dissented is a real clown
skip bayless gets a lot of crap as a sports analyst and i get it for the most part. the 1 thing i always agreed with him on is the "fair market" system of the ncaa. where the schools can pay and sign who they want.
Hey NCAA, no more slave labor for you!
College players do the same things and risk the same injuries NFL players do. They are the backbone of a billion dollar industry. Pay them.
Yes, they make money off these kids, but they don’t want them to get any benefits
Th priority should be educating kids. Not a hole coaches and schools getting rich off of kids
The Russians used to get blasted because they gave student athletes money to live on while they studied and sported. They had to maintain a certain GPA to remain in the program. Our students had to "SUFFER" for their sport. Reality coming home? Barry.
Good I'm sick and tired of these corporations making zillions of dollars and not compiscate the very people who makes them the money.
does anyone smell NCAA Football games??
They should be paid..less then 1% goes pro and over 50% receive lifetime injuries.?and if you think they shouldn't? You've obviously wasn't good at Real Sports🤷♂️
This is a good step. It's ridiculous that the players don't get any cash when college basketball and football generate Billion$ while the coaches make Bank off their backs.
The NCAA aka the Keystone Cops are running around trying to figure out what to do for something that has been coming for a decade. It is truly amateur hour. This was the only constitutional decision the Supreme Court could make and yet the NCAA leadership is "shocked" by the decision. Within the next few years there will be two divisions in NCAA sports at least for football and basketball and maybe even baseball. Upper tier, whatever they call it, will be power schools with wealthy programs that have been de facto semi-pro teams for a long while and the second tier populated by those schools that just can't afford to pay the salaries of the players and their bloated athletic departments. It will mark the end of the charade or amateurism for big time college athletics and confirm amateurism for the schools that just can't afford to play the big money game or refuse to prostitute academics in the name of sports glory.
There should be no scholarships for student Athletes. Football and Basketball, ectra. should be treated as school electives. If the schools are going to pay the players then the team should have nothing to do with the school. Maybe have the team be "Supported" or the team is financed by the school but to say that they are students playing a game and they are paid is an affront to students. Many students could play sports but they value their education more and would never have the time or stamina to practice, train, condition and travel let alone play in games.
Yes, Colleges should do away with sports at this current state and start from scratch.
An NCAA player was asked will he be doing a lot partying after a final four victory. He responded the cafeteria was closed after practice and he could never get enough to eat.
So to foster the e-r b does a title for the school now include range rovers for the star players
NO FREE COLLEGE
NO WIPING OUT COLLEGE DEBT
NO PAYING COLLEGE ATHLETES
Great news
It will just be taken from their FULL scholarships. Maybe they will have to pay their way like the rest of us. Let alone if they are good enough to go pro, they will make millions over the next 8-10 years that most people will not. So a few have ruined it for all because they want to get paid along with a free ride. Maybe the free ride is over.
