"Suicide Is Painless" is a song written by Johnny Mandel (music) and Mike Altman (lyrics), which was the theme song for both the movie and TV series M*A*S*H. Mike Altman is the son of the original film’s director, Robert Altman, and was 14 years old when he wrote the song’s lyrics. During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson in the 1980s, Robert Altman said that while he only made $70,000 for having directed the movie, his son had earned more than $1 million for having co-written the song.

Someone said: "A few little voicing errors but good!" I want to see him do better; must be a music B.A. or graduate. Never ever payed much attention to lyrics to anything; it's the music. Me, took a fast track to some money in another field, not in music, but as a pianist grade A; I forgot it. Young pianists that can really play, never ever let your dream to play second place to making a good living a few years after school. Maybe I'll dig out my piano soon, but nothing like a bass, drum, a couple horns behind me; communication thru playing together, I miss that. I love this recording; haven't heard it since I was 13 y/o. Great job Tony!
