Great topic. Important maneuver as well. I didn't learn this maneuver until I was working on my CFI. Another important tool to know as a commercial pilot. As you mentioned, Never do this w/o an instructor, other pilot experienced w/this maneuver. Things can go south quickly if you're not experienced with what happens to the a/c. Fly Safe folks.
great explanation and demonstration 👏🏻 I did it first time when getting my CPL and it brought out a new perspective to autorotation and energy management for me. I'm glad my instructor showed me
Excellent topic. I was only shown this manoeuvre two years ago and it blew my mind in a positive way. I was shown not from a high hover, but from a standard cruise entry and then reduced airspeed to zero till ready to gain it back. I was really comfy it in and to honest, I can hit my mark much more often than S or 180's. Where I fly, there are plenty of field options so a traditional auto would be fine once into wind, but great to have this option tucked away for that one time!
I realize it must be difficult as an instructor to organize information and XP for new students. For me personally, given the way my brain is wired, I know that getting to experience some of the more "advanced" maneuvers earlier would have helped my learning. I believe that for some folks getting to see what the aircraft is capable of (closer to the limits if you will) makes some of the more straight fwd EP's less intimidating. As I have moved into working toward a commercial rating I can now look back a little and understand why CFI's have such a relaxed attitude about flying autorotations. Like y'all said, it's another tool in the toolbox. Stay safe and thanks for sharing.
I've been off the videos for a while but I wanted to see this one! Had an instructor at my school who went to work offshore, as you do on the gulf in louisiana, and had an engine failure as soon as he cleared the platform. Basically a 150' hover auto, probably a lot like this.
How much altitude roughly do you need to speed back up once you start gaining airspeed? Are you going all the way to the published auto speed when you finally accelerate?

Fantastic! Thank you for sharing!
Great video guys, my flight instructor taught me that maneuver. Like Chris said if you need to fly to a spot, this maneuver is made to hit a spot
Absolutely Charlie thank you for sharing your experience!
