Billy Ray, I want to thank you for setting the example that "manly men" do not have to use the "F" word. Thank you very much. from a father of three sons.

My father had a sawmill and I was just a little tot to five years old and then we moved away from it. I learned a lot from my father. I never logged or anything, I did a little firewood, not much. I had a really hard time sharpening my saw since, even though my father was great at it. I’ve been watching these videos and I’ve improved on a lot on my sharpening. I got some saws so I started cutting stuff again enjoying it a lot. Thank you.

Ya got me tearing up. I think of my dad every time I make fire which is pretty much every day since I’ve lived in state forests of Minnesota for 30 months now.”You need fuel, heat and oxygen, he’d say. I’m always obsessed about optimizing those essential ingredients.

Haha we just sold our bull recently after our new calf was born, they always gotta check everything out and always want to fight it, it was exhausting, couldn't leave anything in the meadows unattended for 30 mins or hed have a crack at it.
And if you had work to do you were always checking your back.
And that sharpening trick looks much more comfortable than how we were taught in forestry, you'd hold the saw on the grond between your knees and hunch over.
    This looks more comfortable.

When I was 8 years old, dad had me out splitting Ponderosa pine with an 8lb maul. It took me forever to split anything, but it taught me to work hard. To this day, I love going up into the quiet woods to cut and split a load of firewood. I'm garbage at falling trees, but I do it as safe as possible and get it done.

Hey man, i metal detect as a hobby in New England. Find axe heads quite a bit, ranging from 100-200yrs old. I refurbish them as best i can (you would be surprised how well the majority clean up. Some still end up pretty pitted to be clear.) The most common shape i find have that "bullet" shape to the axe head. Which makes sense as i usually find them around old stone cellar holes, they probably wanted a axe that could chop as well as split. Anyhow, thought you may find this interesting. Happy Holidays Brother.

@@BuckinBillyRaySmithy grandpa is will be 77 in January and this was the first year he was going to no burn wood bc he’s just not able to do it like he used to so I took it upon my self to buy myself a saw and plenty of axes and a maul for that gnarly oak and other twisted, knotted stuff. And I’ve cut and split atleast 5 cords for them and I plan on cutting atleast 1 tree a week so I can stock pile and fill their wood shed and the back slab so they will never have to worry about having heat in the winter!! And I owe a lot of the inspiration to really get into this again with you showing how you can split with an ax !! I hope to meet you one day and v split some logs with you one day Buck! I enjoy these video's. I have become curious how an axe would perform in these eastern hardwoods that I deal with, I have used a maul exclusively. I mostly seek red, white oak and hickory, their btu value is high. I have some axe heads that I inherited from rural elders that I need to try and remount. The one time I tried to use an axe it was a big box store special and unbelievably the axe head broke, lol.
