This is WHO WE ARE, my culture my people. Its music like this that connects us with nature, our ancestors and the real defination of OUR SOUL. thank you very much. tisu vanhu vacho.
Mucheka Weretso is perhaps symbolic of our culture and beliefs. It is a cloth of the pattern called retso at least as I know it. It is mostly common in the red/maroon shade but here Vee Mhofu has shown us that blue/purplish variant too. It is a cloth worn by those culturally revered for being the family Spirit mediums. This song is pregnant with the richness of our culture represented both visually and in sound. The vocals are superb as the harmonies and exchange are perhaps symbolic of the harmony of our culture and the beautiful environment with its flora and fauna chosen as a setting for this video. While the known costumes associated with this mbira sound have been aptly depicted, I like the fact that Vee Mhofu sought to appear clad in pristine looking suits and boe tie together with his double playing mbira embedded in madeze dressed in the red and blue/purplish retso. This is perhaps an admirable expression that mbira music is a smart genre embraced by the smart gentlemen too. It is unfortunate that our mbira is perhaps more appreciated by those foreign to our culture and perhaps viewed as demonic by some in our population. While musical greats like the Mansa of Mali (Salif Keita) and other West African musicians have perhaps popularised their Kora and feature it extensively in their performances, our mbira has remained somewhat subdued and yet from this superb song one can experience the fullness of sound produced by our mbira. I am fascinated here by the mbira ngoma combination with the mbira bass giving a stamping back up. Ambuya clad in the retso as a band across her shoulder, is initially pounding outside the hut in a typical Shona way of life and it is when she gets into the rhythm and starts dancing in the typical style associated with our mbira sound that she evokes the connection we have with this deep rooted cultural definition. Well done Vee Mhofu, keep churning this superb music of our Soul. We love it.👏👏
I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude and special thanks to all those who participated in the video, Dziva Rembira Afro Mix Band, all my fans, my family, and all those who supported me during this project. Thank you also to my peers in the industry for your advice and encouragement. This is my first music video from the Album Izwi Remvura (2020 production) and I would not have successfully completed this project without your invaluable support.
