- In this part of the interview Rod Morgenstein Talks about the album "Winger" and why Robert Plant was looking for him.
In our previous two stories we talked to Rod about his influences and his time at University of Miami in Florida in 1973, where he met Steve Morse, Andy West, and Allen Sloan, playing under the official Studio Music and curriculum title of, Rock Ensemble II.
At the university, The Dregs recorded their first album in 1975, The Great Spectacular, as a class project. The band parted ways in 1983
In 1987, Rod was auditioning for a gigs for Billy Idol, Joe Lyne Turner and others. Rod met Kip Winger and the band in a studio by chance and hit it off.
Two months later, their debut album Winger went double platinum. Winger followed up in 1990 with In the Heart of the Young. The band released their latest album 7 and currently on tour.

Great to see and listen to Rod, as a drummer myself all I can say is this guy is beyond amazing, Top Tier drummer/musician! Totally underrated and personally I don't think most people really know how accomplished and great this cat is.
Rod is absolutely brilliant beyond words and I'm not sure why in the interviews I've seen of him he never mentions being a drum professor at Berklee for 20 years?
Sorry, The articles are on the website and provide that kind do detail with hyperlinks. Thank you! MusicXplorer.com
Rod is one of the nicest guys I've every met in the industry. Met him backstage at a small club when Winger first started. He was crazy generous with his time with me and my friend.
He is a very cool, parts 1 and 2 are Great too. Thanks
Rod has always been such a humble guy. Why in the hell wouldn't Robert Plant want the best drummer on the planet?
Some friends of mine (and myself) used to be Dregheads. Probably saw them about 25-30 times, and met Rod several times. He was always just as nice and normal of a person as you could ever meet!
Yes Rod is a very cool dude, that was a good story on Plant. Thank you
Great stories saw plant in 1988 in Philly one of the shows where pat torpey helped drum for some dates
Thank you very much, more to come...
Rod is so awesome.. super nice guy and brilliant.
Indeed he is TY!!!
Is there anyway to get these interviews without the annoying, inappropriate background music?
Thanks for the comment, the music should not be a distraction 😎
I left a comment on Part 2, but just wanted to say thanks again for interviewing Rod, great guy, great interview. Cheers.
Thank you is much, all comments will get to Rod or anyone else on the site
One of the most exciting players ever! I watch him with Jordan Rudess regularly just for fun! It's a shame he isn't more well-known.
He does need more attention as a very talented drummer
Greatest Drummer & nicest Guy ever. Love Ya, Rod.
He is a great guy?? Thank you
I still remember the only one time i saw Winger live in France as guest for Scorpions in the late 80's in the biggest Paris concert hall.
I probably was one of the few who was there just for them because i played drums and Rod was one of my favourites.
I bought a Winger Tshirt from the start and wore it for years until it couldn't stand it anymore.
I remember too that after the show everyone, including music magazines and all said in France,it should have been the Scorpions who should be guest for Winger.
Winger was a great band and Rod is a great drummer underratted
I will pass this to Rid. TY!
and Kip writes Classical...lol who woulda thunk!!
Right!
this explains the beautiful, odd-bass drum timing he used on most of the songs like Hungry, 17, etc. It is awesome and different but not too crazy just like Kip wanted. Blew my 16 yr old "2 & 4, double bass only" mind away 🤯
Dregs, one of my favorites.
Yeah they are good! Thankd
True visionary!
Yes her isTY!!
Loved his playing in the dregs and winger. Seems like a down to earth, great dude. Play on.
You win, Rod is one very cool DUDE Thank you!!
Rod playing with the Jelly Jam deserves some love!
Thank you!!
time time time, master of it
Time is the key
Legend!
He is indeed!
Seen Rod with the (Dixie) Dregs many times. One of the most under rated drummers IMO. He is phenomenal.
He's a very cool guy with no ego
