So much of Nate's behavior, both positive and negative, throughout the series is rooted in his insecurity and his relationship with his actual father (we see examples of it early on in the restaurant). Nate also sees Ted as a father figure to a certain extent. So when Ted gives him recognition and builds him up throughout the first season and somewhat into the second, he essentially sees it as getting the love and affection from a father figure that he never actually got from his actual father. The issue come in when Nate doesn't realize that Ted is this kind and loving to everyone, so when others receive that as well, he gets jealous and insecure and thinks he's being abandoned. Whereas in reality it's just Ted being Ted.

      Exactly, 100%
Also, Nate’s issues are just as about mental health as Ted’s are, they’re just at different stages and manifest in different ways.

💯 Nate has waited his whole life for the kind of paternal support & recognition that Ted so easily gave him in Season 1. Especially with the promotion, he must have felt on top of the world for the first time in his life. In Season 2, Ted’s support was not as active, not just b/c he had his own baggage to process, but b/c he had hoped as an adult Nate could carry on himself with what he’d been given. Unfortunately, Nate saw this reduced involvement as another source of abandonment, instead of Ted trusting in his natural talents & character to succeed.
As someone who was raised with authoritarian style parenting, I could understand Nate’s motivations, even while I hated what he did.
Excited for you guys to get to season 3.
Also, idk if my app is trippin, but for me it says this comment was posted 4 weeks ago?? 🧐 Derek be time traveling.

Also, season 2 had no Ted and Nate only scenes until the end and that confrontation.
Nate was upset that Ted laughed at the idea of Nate being a 'big dog' when needing to talk to Isaac.
Nate was upset that Roy was added to the coaching staff.
Nate wants credit and praise, and in his insecurities he feels he is going to get credit and blame.
He is well written, and his insecurities even show through season 1, so the change isn't out of nowhere but breadcrumbs are there the whole way.

For the picture thing, Nate gave Ted a picture of the two of them for Christmas, and it had a nice thank you note written on it. Ted actually has it on his dresser next to a picture of his son Henry, as seen in episode 10 “No Weddings and a Funeral”. But Nate is oblivious and angry, so he’s angry that he doesn’t see the picture in Ted’s office

Nate is so insecure that he needed to literally see that Ted values their relationship. Ted put the photo in a place that's important to HIM, but because that place wasn't where Nate could see it, he perceived its absence as a sign that Ted doesn't value him. He imagined a bunch of other slights exactly like that, every time Ted showed approval to someone else. He thinks so little of himself that he is hypersensitive to any indication that other people also think poorly of him, and then he overreacts to it. If he has the authority, he tries to abuse those people, like with the ball boy or with Colin at the start of the season. But with equals or superiors like Ted or Roy, he just seethes and lets it build up until he's living in his own imaginary world of slights...

Obviously, there's nothing to justify what Nate did to Ted, that's just a shitty thing to do. That said, I get why Nate is the way he is. He is used to being treated like a joke, like a second thought. That's why Roy seeming to write him off as a threat bothers him so much. The only time he ever feels like he's seen and respected is when he channels his self-hatred and anger. And if that's the only thing that gets him results, of course he's going to continue to do it. You can also clearly see a change in him after spitting in the mirror helps him get the restaurant seat, he's quicker to negative emotions to help build strength.
I get being pissed at Nate, I was too. But he has just as much a mental health issue as Ted, and it should be addressed as such. Plus, I'm sure comments like "he probably needs a step stool" contributed to his current self hatred as well

It's not that in reality Ted ignored Nate, it's just that due to dealing with his own problems he didn't have time to feed Nate's ego. If you've paid attention, Ted and Nate didn't have ANY scenes alone throughout all of Season 2 until this point. Needy Nate noticed Ted wasn't giving him special attention and interpreted that as a slight. Even KNOWING about Ted's problems.
Basically the validation he's lacked from his father he was getting from Ted. And when life got in the way of that? He struck back at Ted since he'll never do it to his actual father.

Having gone back and watched the season, there are a few moments which I think Nate might be referring to and a lot of it revolves around Roy: When Isaac is having issues and Ted says he needs a "big dog" to talk to him, Nate volunteers and Ted laughs then apologizes when he realized Nate was serious but enlists Roy's help. Offering Nate's office to Higgins while Dr. Sharon was conducting her sessions. Then bringing Roy on as part of the coaching staff without consulting Nate was a big one. But yeah, a lot of projection on Nate's end from the lack of positive reinforcement from his own dad. Overall, solid season but I think they could have done a better job connecting those dots.

The saddest part about this whole season is the fact that the picture Nate's talking about has been on display in Ted's apartment the entire time. He really cherishes that picture, it's front and center. But the guy would see Nate every day at work, the fact that the picture is hanging up in his apartment is affectionate. The only scene solely between Ted and Nate in all of season 2 is the locker room scene in the finale, 2x12. The last scene we had with just the two of them was in 1x7, when Ted has to apologize to Nate for yelling at him in the hotel the night before. Alternatively, Ted has lots of one on one scenes in season 2 with other characters like Roy, Rebecca, Beard, Higgins, players on the team, etc. It sounds crazy at first when you hear Nate say Ted abandoned him. But then when you think back to how much time Ted spent with him alone in season 1, how he supported him, worked with him, helped him grow, etc, and then compare it to season 2, and they never have a single moment or scene together until the confrontation. They laughed when he called himself a big dog, he wasn't considered part of the team so he didn't get a coffee machine, Roy was furious when Jamie kissed Keeley, but not when Nate did. I think it's a little easier to understand Nate's thought process and fall from grace that was building though the season when you keep all of this in mind. Nate is constantly seeking approval from everyone in his life to make up for how he feels about his relationship with his father, and he lashes out when he doesn't get it.

Re watching these with you 3 is my joy!! Watching Nate devolve is so disturbing yet so captivating because it shows how deep insecurity can blind one from seeing what's right in front of them. When Nate feels threatened that seems to equate to abandoned to him he gets worse. His relationship with his dad is so instrumental. My mind tried to rationalize like Aaron but my emotions were like Eric and Calvin. Lol . Calvin was right. He wanted Ted to lose and be revealed as weak. It's the how come "he can be seen this way and i can't" he envys what he is only viewing on the surface. Don't envy outcomes when you don't know what they sacrificed, suffered, experienced to get there. Come on season 3!!
    You guys are gems... 🎉

  • @rbrainsop1
    @rbrainsop1 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

I think the most important thing to keep in mind as we watch Nate's downward arc, is the theme we've been seeing over and over throughout this show. 1) People can change. Even total assholes (think Season 1 Jamie Tartt), and 2) Though it's completely natural to hate them for being assholes, the only effective way to promote that change is not to withhold our love and approval until they shape up, but to love them into becoming their better selves. This is Ted's whole thing. And even though it doesn't seem to be working with Nate just yet, that's part of the process. It's not a straight linear progression. Again, consider Jamie's progress (and occasional regress) up until this point.
So yeah, it's completely normal to be pissed at Nate right now. We all are. But the answer isn't to let Beard and Roy have "however much time they want" with him to sort it out, no matter how satisfying you might think that would be. It's to go the Ted route... see the pain under the lashing out, see the good hiding under the bad, and love him until he sorts himself out, however long that might take.

It always baffles me that reactors don’t understand the Nate switch. I dunno if it’s just cause I can relate to it in a way or seen things like this happen in real life to people but there’s so many instances where we see Nate isn’t secure and will lash out and things will go to his head. The actor who played him himself posted a load of reasons why it happened and I’ll list a bunch.
    - Literally the first time you see him in the show he is shouting at a stranger
    - The scene where he gives the pre season talk are genuine insults and he clearly enjoys the payback
    - His scenes berating Colin. Saying he is a mediocre painting
    - He says about Dani “if he needs motivation we can show him his goddamn paycheck”
    - He laughs at Jamie’s misfortune in Season 1 even after being told not to by Ted.
    - When he believes he is fired by Rebecca he immediately turns on her and calls her a “Shrew”
    - The changing of the hair colour is gradually progressed throughout S2 to demonstrate this change
    - He starts spitting at himself, he knows he’s becoming something that isn’t nice
    - The most blatant and important is that Nate feels sidelined by Ted which fuels the insecurity even though it wasn’t intentional. They only have one scene together in S2, and it’s in this episode, a deliberate choice to try and demonstrate this perceived ‘separation’. Nate feels like he earned his position in Season 1 and is constantly praised in Season 1. Then in S2 is just treated as a coach, which is fine. But Nate is insecure and instead doesn’t feel as valued by Coach and Ted. This is exacibated when Roy is just brought in without any discussion and seems to take a position on the same level as Nate. However the kicker is that Ted is completely unaware of how Nate is feeling, it’s completely one sided but it’s still there on Nate’s. This is shown when Beard calls him out on being rude to Colin. Nate just asks “Does Ted Know?” Ted isn’t even aware of this stuff.
    - No one generally takes him seriously as a person, his Dad doesn’t take him seriously, the Waitess at the restaurant didn’t take him seriously, Roy didn’t take him seriously after kissing Keeley, keeley calls him a “big dog” and people laugh at the notion, he’s the only one to not get an Espresso machine even though they are right there.
    - He believes Ted got rid of the picture he gave him, not realising that Ted has it in a special place at home.
    - The way he treats the younger kit man, his first action against him is to be rude in Season 1. He talks shit about the guys Mum when he asks for time off. He criticises the smell of the washing. It’s also only after seeing a negative tweet about himself that Nate tells the Kitman he’s going to ruin his life. Again more insecurity.
    - The first and last shot of the Season is the same shot, both of Nate in the same pose, signifying the change throughout the season.
And I’m pretty sure there’s many tiny examples I’ve forgotten. It’s really amusing to me how no one picks up on the little slights against Nate. It’s clear as day to me and something I see in real life on a regular basis. Basically just tiny little comments and actions from many individuals towards one individual but because it’s all from different people or “jokes” no one realises the impact on the person it’s happening against. It’s very realistic and actually shows how well it’s done that it flies over so many peoples heads.

I think it is a bit jarring because through the show so far we have been seeing many healthy and positive changes in characters, while nate is going in the complete opposite direction. He isn't dealing with his issues in a healthy way and is heading in a much darker direction than most other characters, so to some people it feels off, because they were expecting that positive breakthrough. People missed that sometimes it gets worse before it gets better.

There's also the fact that any time anyone talks about his suit (like at the funeral) they call it the suit Ted bought him. And the Dutch player points out how infantalizing he considers it for a grown man to have someone else buying clothes for him. That's why he goes suit shopping with Keeley in the first place

Just to leap onto the Nate-hate train in this outro, but someone pointed out after the 2nd season first aired and completed, that the seeds were there for Nate's downfall. Even in season one, where you see his vindictiveness and cruelty come out, little micro aggressions that all built up to the ending of this season. It's really quite interesting to watch it on multiple viewings (it's a comfort show), but I cannot wait for you guys to watch season 3. Very rewarding and so many callbacks to watch out for, not to mention the masterful story arcs that come full circle.

On Aaron's point about "DID Ted ignore Nate?" Between the fact that he laughed at Nate saying he's a 'big dog', bringing Roy in to coach (making him feel replaced) and if you pay attention the episode Nate roasted the team in season 1 is the last time Ted and Nate have a 1 on 1 conversation until this episode, there IS some evidence Nate felt ignored.
Does NOT justify, but someone with insecurities, that's more than enough ammo to believe Ted hates him now (speaking as someone with some mental health issues that trends that direction)

    • @anonymes2884
      @anonymes2884 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

For sure. But how we _feel_ doesn't necessarily reflect reality right ? One of the big themes of the show is about transcending our own perspective and trying to understand how others see the world ("Be curious, not judgemental") and here Ted is blinded by his own positivity - it doesn't occur to him that elevating Nate and then mostly just leaving him be could be perceived as neglect because in Nate's place _Ted_ would see only the positives of their relationship (and he doesn't understand that's not how Nate sees the world).
And in exactly the same way, Nate is blinded by his own insecurity - for instance it doesn't occur to _him_ that Ted might've put Nate's photo in a more honoured position than his desk at work (at home, right next to his son's) because _Nate_ can't see the world that way.

Its interesting looking back at the show from this point, and realizing that while Nate felt he deserved all the credit for the team's success, he didn't recognize it was Coach Lasso that got him there. It was Lasso that got Roy to step up as Captain and "lead" and fix the team and stop Nate from being harassed, and that created an environment where Nate finally felt the confidence to speak up with a suggestion once, which led to everything that followed. As much as Nate deserves to be "hated", it shows how people should self-reflect. Do you blame someone because they're doing something you dislike ? Or because its easier than acknowledging there is something wrong with you ?

I was livid! So was most of the internet. Lol. I’ll never forget Twitter after that episode and then 2x12 aired. It got even worse. Nick Mohammed the actor who brilliantly plays Nate actually wrote out and posted this detailed list of all the things they’d deliberately done to slowly show Nate’s ego, his insecurities & his neediness. It’s definitely worth a read. Nate’s arc has been unraveling from the beginning. But now the question is can he be redeemed or has he joined Rupert as the villain of Ted Lasso? Can’t wait for Season 3.

I think it's interesting to see people watch the Nate storyline the first time through. Some things always slip through the cracks with it. Nate is not threatening, nor does he want to be. He's weak, he's insecure, and he doesn't know how to deal with these things because of his heritage and the life he grew up with. A lot of people forget just how shitty his father is. He doesn't care AT ALL about his sons success (at least he doesn't show an inkling of care), nor does he ever show him any kind of warmth (in juxtaposition to his mother), but since Nate has his mother, yet a false father, he looks to Ted for that. Ted's the first person to remember his name, to give him a nickname, to show him love and appreciation. And then, Ted put more of his focus on other people (and I'm not saying that's wrong or his fault, at all). Ted did not realize just how much Nate cared about him and what he thought of him, and therefore, Nate's perspective of him got lost in translation. He became wildly stressed out, he felt insignificant in the shadow of Roy (we first see this when he goes to the restaurant and the hostess asks if Roy is his father in a malicious manner), and he built up guilt over knowing that he had to do something in retaliation to his loss of love from Ted (and he also probably thought respect, too). That's why his hair turned white- all of these emotions that he never really tried processing before had finally hit an overhaul. When the body takes on too much stress, guilt, hatred, insecurity, we react to it. He ages himself because of this. I'm not saying I agree with what Nate did, I don't think anyone will. But it's important to understand exactly why he did it and why he is redeemable. And forgiveness is one of the main constructs of this show. For some reason, Nate gets entirely more hate than 3 characters who also do TERRIBLE things- Jamie (his entire treatment of the team throughout season one and utter disrespect towards Ted the entire time), Rebecca (wanted to ruin the entire team and Ted throughout almost all of season one), and Rupert, who I don't even need to explain. Nate does not deserve more hate than Rupert and I will die on that hill. Rebecca and Jamie had redemptions, and therefore, Nate deserves one too.

I think the thing with Nate that is difficult to understand is that he got everything he ever wanted and he still wasn't happy. Which is a hard truth for anyone to process. It comes across as insecurity and a lack of gratitude, but I think the truth is that in the first season he went from a bullied, unnoticed kit man to an assistant coach. He was thrilled. He was empowered and it was beyond his wildest dreams. But at the end of the day, all the success in the world can't fill an emotional hole in the center of your heart. I think that's why Nate hates Ted. Maybe Nate thought that if he was able to get to a certain place in life, he would finally be happy. So when Ted metaphorically lifted Nate up, Nate was forced to confront the fact that, even at the top, all of his problems are still there. If Ted hadn't given him everything, Nate would at least still have the ability to dream of a better life. So he resents Ted now because that illusion is shattered and Ted can't lift him up any higher. Like Eric said in the episode, he holds Ted responsible for how he feels. The argument that Ted ignored him this season is bullshit on Nate's part, he's petulant that Ted can't fix all of his problems any more.

Right. Nate is basically _waiting_ for Ted to act according to the narrative of Nate's life so when he does, to even a very limited extent, it just vindicates Nate's worst fears. His insecurity doesn't let him even _consider_ for instance that Ted might have put his photo in an even _more_ revered place, right next to Ted's photo of his own son.

Even though the Nate storyline felt a bit heavy-handed this season, it's something that almost never gets portrayed in entertainment, but happens a lot in real life. Glad the Akufo storyline is over because that was just horrible writing by people who don't know soccer and don't know Africa. Not in a million years, a young player going to the Premier League in England would move to Raya Casablanca. Also, pretending Africa is a single country is ridiculous, there's no way a Ghanaian billionaire would spend money on a Nigerian player to play for a Moroccan team. The UK has more Nigerian culture than Morocco has. I found this to be an embarrassing storyline about a real problem with England refusing to return cultural artifacts they stole all over the world, doing more bad than good for the actual problem using this poor metaphore.
