Thanks Raul. It sounds funny or even hilarious I didn't really know what the compressor does.... Now it's clear and makes sense.
    Excellent job.
Many greetings from Chris and Peti

Hi thanks for this tutorial on Compression. I have a ZOOM L20. Are the Comp Settings on the ZOOM L12 the same as the L20?

Awesome video. I understand compression better. However, for the Livetrak L12, I am still not sure where to use and how much to use in a live gig setting. Maybe on the vocals and bass? The other instruments like guitars and keyboard, we want to hear the range. What settings should I use?

Thank you for listening, I am glad it helped you understand compression a bit better! Compression is one of those things that you just have to try experimenting with it and listening to see what you like. The compressor on the L12 is limited in its settings but useful. What the compressor is essentially doing is reducing the high peaks that might overload the channel and allowing you to bring the signal up. I use it on the bass, the snare drum and vocals. Not all the time and not in all of them but when I want a track to cut through the mix, I apply it slowly and listen to how it affects the sound. On the board, as you turn up the compressor knob, it lowers the peaks and brings the makeup gain up to make the sound of the signal louder.
Try it, experiment and listen, it can't hurt, and you can always turn it back down!
Keep coming back and listen to our music playlist as well as the tutorial playlist that we have.

Where did you find the fixed compressor settings of the Livetrak series? I couldn't find it in any documentation!!! If the COMP knob is actually the "make up" gain... does this mean we control the amount of compression with the gain knob? If so, it would work something like this: I adjust the gain while looking at the VU meter in the Control App. Let's say my signal peaks at -12 dBs with the compressor OFF. Once turned on, the compressor would be compressing the extra 6 dBs above the threshold in a 3:1 ratio. I would get a -16 dB signal peak (4 dBs of actual compression) and the COMP knob would just raise the overall volume to taste. Dif I get it right? Thanks!!

In theory, you are correct in your assumption. I can't be 100% sure that the fixed settings I used are correct. I got the information from the Bing AI. I asked when I first started the video, and those settings are what AI came up with. I couldn't find it in any documentation, but those settings make a lot of sense. Most compressors use those settings as a starting point. Assuming that AI was correct, then you nailed it!
The best way is to experiment with the know and see how it affects the sound. I use it on the bass drum mic and the snare mic when I am recording drums.
Thanks for watching and feel free to contact me if you have more questions.

Still have no idea when or when not to use compression on the zoom............

I understand, compressors are hard to use because the effect is usually very subtle.
Try recording a track with a bit of compression and one without and see if you can hear the difference.
The idea is that it should make a recording more balanced between the loud parts and the soft parts.
I use it on the vocals if there are soft sections where the vocalist might hum a bit and then sing out.
Try putting the comp knob at around 9 or 10 o'clock to see what it does for you. Try it on a bass or a bass drum or snare.
      Experiment! Good luck!
