'Casualisation' of the workforce is a big problem in NZ. SO many people working less than 40 hrs per week, or 'contracting' when they are in fact working full time for one company. Before the Employment Contracts Act, it was very similar to Australia with overtime and 40+ hours work week. That rarely happens now, particularly overtime pay rates... that has pretty much gone. The employers have gone to employing people for 20 or 30 hrs per week, and making sure that you are kept on as a casual worker. Then you can be dropped at anytime without any compensation. As a result of this, you need a couple of part time jobs. And of course the IRD then taxes you extra for having the audacity to have a second job.

Somethings should be cheaper in New Zealand like lamb and dairy but a way worse for sure. Weird thing is that what you guys make over there like dairy and cheese and lamb are more expensive, and Rump steak was more expensive here. Same with seafood. New Zealanders are getting ripped off with their own products they make.

You're pretty much used to it. I lived there for 14 years unfortunately I didn't feel at home there. Never had much job security always casual and never scored full time work. Went back to New Zealand in 2018 and I've had full time work ever since yes the money is less here but I don't have to live week to week worrying about whether I'll be able to put food on the table
I wish more Kiwis got how badly we are paid here and how employers don't respect the Work/Life balance. Aussies mostly get their weekends off and they fight for it, Kiwi employers just expect you to spend most your life at work and aren't even thankful you do it. Kiwis are being paid better now, but man when I was in the NZ workforce a decade ago, I felt I was being exploited the whole time. Soon as I got to Australia I had employers throwing money at me.

The clip said he was on $12.50 when he was 18. He looks over 30 now so that was many years ago. Many years ago $12.50 was minimum wage. The reporting (as usual) gives us a distorted view.
I'm assuming that he was on apprentice rates back then. He said that he has been there for over 10 years. The minimum rates for apprentices in 2014 was $11.40 an hour.
Moved into mining 3 years ago. The hardest part for the younger ones is keeping their heads screwed on. Plenty get into gambling, smoking and drinking… you can travel for very little but most live pay check to pay blowing money on holidays, cars, jet skis, motorbikes, tattoos etc It’s crazy meeting people in their late 60s that have been in mining for decades and still “struggle” with expenses.
Good on these young people leaving for greener pastures. Successive governments over the last 35 years have had absolutely no vision for New Zealand going into the future. 7 third world countries have surpassed us in that time to become rich. Maybe if Labour and National form a grand coalition, NZ could move forward? At least they would have agreement and stop cancelling each other out. Plus having the added benefit of continuing beyond the short term 3 years. Unfortunately we are not mature enough as a nation for such a thing to happen.
Yep. Short term sightedness by kiwis and governments have plagued the country for a long time. Not just that but the mentality of always wanting the government to give handouts/free lunch needs to stop as it’s obstructing major economic growth from happening.

Tried Aussie many years ago, yes it was good money but it wasn’t for me. Too big, too loud and too bloody hot. The hardest bit about coming home apart from giving up the good money was admitting to myself that Aussie wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And I think that would be a similar situation for many NZers wh have made the big commitment to move to Australia, it’s would be near impossible to admit that sometimes it’s not the best move. I meet a few Australian people in Asia who detest their own country, too expensive to live, corrupt and the gradual downward standard of living. In NZ we are almost a smaller version of what life could be like in Australia, similar problems, etc. Like most western countries we want to live a life of convenience, but it comes at a cost so we shouldn’t always complain about it, live within your means and it’s a lot easier, nobody needs to fill their house with all the latest crap on finance, nobody needs a stupid big 4wd truck just to go to work but that’s what we do then complain that living is so expensive.

Why don't you do a story on the amount of kiwis that last less than a year in Australia? I know quite a few that have moved back because Australia was not as good as they thought it would be. Another thing is it pays to holiday in Australia if you have never been before because the reason some came back was Australia was not for them.
The National government in NZ is running the country into the ground... low wages, a 'for the rich' economic structure, and slashing critical infrastructure will ensure NZ will lose thousands more kiwis to Australia... can't blame Australia for treating its workers well either blame the National government
You don't remember the flocks of Kiwis leaving under Labour? It's been an issue for years now. But I guess whenever Labour is in it's a crisis and when National is in it's all their fault.
@savvagrachev2754 not like this. My own family is a testament to that. There are more living in Australia than any other point in my lifetime... I went over for a few years in my 20s but came back to good wages and plenty of work... it's so different now

NZ is such a beautiful country but lifestyle wise its not great, compared to overseas. Everything is expensive, “nothing” is available, hard to move around and to travel from.. people are lovely though and beaches stunning!
I think a large part is to do with the population difference, there is 26 million people in Australia and only 5.5 million in NZ, people create jobs, also the government here is so tied up with race relations they've gone blind to how hard it is to actually get ahead in NZ, it's definitely tough, so i dont blame people for leaving, however, i lived in America for 2 years, and i can say their minimum wage is well below ours, our healthcare is world class, even though it's struggling, it comes down to low wages, high gst and even though there is only 5.5 million people, there isn't alot of work in NZ unless you have a masters in something. i don't blame these kiwis at all for leaving and trying to make a better life for themselves overseas, their not just going to Australia, there's also alot in Germany. I think this story lacks context, (for the record I'm Kiwi and have been here since 2005, but wish to return), FIFO is not the only occupation in Australia and so your story would be better served to provide more statistical comparison across industries other than mining, you cite the man who was on $12.50 then moved to Aust, what year was that, was was the comparable wage at the time, etc etc. FIFO is not all its cracked up to be, the wages are higher for a reason, mainly to offset the life disruption. And then add the context for cost of living and median house prices etc. I'm not saying its a bad move, but this story sounds more like an ad for FIFO. Here are some statistics about issues faced by fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers in Australia: Mental health: 33% of FIFO workers report high or very high levels of psychological distress. FIFO workers are more likely to experience mental health issues than non-FIFO workers. Sleep: FIFO workers have significantly worse sleep quality than non-FIFO workers. Substance abuse: FIFO workers are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol. Chronic fatigue: Chronic fatigue affects up to two-thirds of FIFO workers. Isolation: FIFO workers often lack access to social and emotional support networks. Many report feeling disconnected from family and friends. Stigma: Fear of stigma is a strong predictor of psychological distress for FIFO workers. Roster arrangements: Most FIFO workers report that their roster arrangements change regularly. Diet: FIFO workers report eating more vegetables on off-shift days than on-shift days. Other issues FIFO workers face include: Dissatisfaction with the time available for social and domestic activities Negative impact on families Obesity Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes or heart disease

You are right on the money!

Here are some statistics about issues faced by fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers in Australia:
Mental health: 33% of FIFO workers report high or very high levels of psychological distress.
Other issues FIFO workers face include:
Dissatisfaction with the time available for social and domestic activities
Negative impact on families
Obesity
Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes or heart disease
