Well I left Kaikohe end of 2012 on completion of my mechanical trade on $12 a hour and that was my pay rise from 9.There is a minimum hourly wage but you also got to put food on the table and not everywhere has opportunities so that's how the cookie crumbles. If that's all they are willing to pay then you're grateful for it cause it's still helps.onwards an upwards an it beats the dol

Interesting how no one mentions the much stronger unions in Oz where penal rates and overtime still play a big part in the weekly wages, not to mention better working conditions. The Employment Contracts Bill here in NZ effectively stifled wages and reduced good working conditions. Meanwhile we still have poor productivity as employers aren't investing in better management and processes. Personally my professional productivity has increased at least twofold as I'm now doing the job of two people here in NZ, while my wages have reduced.

'Casualisation' of the workforce is a big problem in NZ. SO many people working less than 40 hrs per week, or 'contracting' when they are in fact working full time for one company.
Before the Employment Contracts Act, it was very similar to Australia with overtime and 40+ hours work week. That rarely happens now, particularly overtime pay rates... that has pretty much gone.
The employers have gone to employing people for 20 or 30 hrs per week, and making sure that you are kept on as a casual worker. Then you can be dropped at anytime without any compensation. As a result of this, you need a couple of part time jobs. And of course the IRD then taxes you extra for having the audacity to have a second job.

I ran through the exact same shopping items of my whole Australian shop @ Woolworths Brisbane to Woolworths Dunedin/New Zealand site. Given that wages are smaller it is definitely worse. Somethings should be cheaper in New Zealand like lamb and dairy but a way worse for sure. Weird thing is that what you guys make over there like dairy and cheese and lamb are more expensive, and Rump steak was more expensive here. Same with seafood. New Zealanders are getting ripped off with their own products they make.

Good on these young people leaving for greener pastures. Successive governments over the last 35 years have had absolutely no vision for New Zealand going into the future. 7 third world countries have surpassed us in that time to become rich. Maybe if Labour and National form a grand coalition, NZ could move forward? At least they would have agreement and stop cancelling each other out. Plus having the added benefit of continuing beyond the short term 3 years. Unfortunately we are not mature enough as a nation for such a thing to happen.

The hardest bit about coming home apart from giving up the good money was admitting to myself that Aussie wasn’t all it’s cracked up to be. And I think that would be a similar situation for many NZers wh have made the big commitment to move to Australia, it’s would be near impossible to admit that sometimes it’s not the best move. I meet a few Australian people in Asia who detest their own country, too expensive to live, corrupt and the gradual downward standard of living. In NZ we are almost a smaller version of what life could be like in Australia, similar problems, etc. Like most western countries we want to live a life of convenience, but it comes at a cost so we shouldn’t always complain about it, live within your means and it’s a lot easier, nobody needs to fill their house with all the latest crap on finance, nobody needs a stupid big 4wd truck just to go to work but that’s what we do then complain that living is so expensive.

If it wasn't for my age and my wrecked body I'd leave in an instant.
Worked my guts of as a bushman, Ranger and got little in return but redundancy at almost 20 year's service and a body too fked to work hard anymore.
Too dumb to move when I should have, and now too late to even do so.
I envy these younger and a few not so young ones for going while they can.
What gets me are the Kiwis that crawl back to this country expecting some kind of hand out because they are now old and wrecked that has never put anything into the kitty to begin with.

There is no comparison between the New Zealand economy and Australia’s.
We have an economy based largely on primary industries, Australia it is mineral extraction.
Any thought that NZ salaries could match those in Australia is a fantasy. An idea that we could catch up to theirs over a number of years is not tenable.

I think a large part is to do with the population difference, there is 26 million people in Australia and only 5.5 million in NZ, people create jobs, also the government here is so tied up with race relations they've gone blind to how hard it is to actually get ahead in NZ, it's definitely tough, so i dont blame people for leaving, however, i lived in America for 2 years, and i can say their minimum wage is well below ours, our healthcare is world class, even though it's struggling, it comes down to low wages, high gst and even though there is only 5.5 million people, there isn't alot of work in NZ unless you have a masters in something. i don't blame these kiwis at all for leaving and trying to make a better life for themselves overseas, their not just going to Australia, there's also alot in Germany. I think this story lacks context, (for the record I'm Kiwi and have been here since 2005, but wish to return), FIFO is not the only occupation in Australia and so your story would be better served to provide more statistical comparison across industries other than mining, you cite the man who was on $12.50 then moved to Aust, what year was that, was was the comparable wage at the time, etc etc.
FIFO is not all its cracked up to be, the wages are higher for a reason, mainly to offset the life disruption. And then add the context for cost of living and median house prices etc. I'm not saying its a bad move, but this story sounds more like an ad for FIFO.
Here are some statistics about issues faced by fly-in fly-out (FIFO) workers in Australia:
Mental health: 33% of FIFO workers report high or very high levels of psychological distress. FIFO workers are more likely to experience mental health issues than non-FIFO workers.
Sleep: FIFO workers have significantly worse sleep quality than non-FIFO workers.
Substance abuse: FIFO workers are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol.
Chronic fatigue: Chronic fatigue affects up to two-thirds of FIFO workers.
Isolation: FIFO workers often lack access to social and emotional support networks. Many report feeling disconnected from family and friends.
Stigma: Fear of stigma is a strong predictor of psychological distress for FIFO workers.
Roster arrangements: Most FIFO workers report that their roster arrangements change regularly.
Diet: FIFO workers report eating more vegetables on off-shift days than on-shift days.
Other issues FIFO workers face include:
Dissatisfaction with the time available for social and domestic activities
    Negative impact on families
    Obesity
Increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes or heart disease

New Zealand is you. We are New Zealanders. Stop blaming other people for your perceived problems. Get off your ass and change your situation. Start by changing your attitude. And maybe turn your phone off. Everytime you have an excuse or blame , you know you aint there yet.

I left Ch Ch in 82 to go work in the Mines in Qld.
Been back once in 89 for a wedding froze My arse off and had to shout beers n smokes everywhere i went cause everyone was broke asf.
Ive never got and never will get ozzy citizenship, still to this day get told sheep jokes, all the very best operators are kiwis and the best bosses. Ozzies in general are decent blokes, unless theyre pissed, borrowing money or having to count past 10. Ozzy shelias are more manly than the blokes but 3 months into their mining career their arses widden by at least 400mm, Camp food being the culprit... anyways much love to all, stay safe, admit to nothing, full noise, pump the jam and remember the most important thing to take to work with ya is a...... Have older friends, some who came back to live here, and who have drug-addicted sons who live over there, and know others who move there and have never had a job. Have a niece who moved her family there but came back and is much more settled here, could only get a part time job stacking shelves over there. Her husband was a cabinet maker so got a job easy. Owned a good house and pool there.
