What NBA Players And Analysts Said About Luka Doncic Before And After The Draft!

  • Luka Doncic is an extraordinary player. Luka is the youngest player to have 35-point triple-doubles in succession, breaking Oscar Robertson's record, and only the fourth player to record it since the 1983-84 season, joining Michael Jordan, James Harden, and Russell Westbrook. He also surpassed Michael Jordan’s record of 18 consecutive games with at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. Luka is the youngest player in the NBA postseason history with a 40-point triple-double, while also becoming the second player to record at least 43 points, 17 rebounds, and 13 assists in any game, joining Wilt Chamberlain.
Today we will take a look at what NBA players and analysts said about Luka Doncic before and after the draft. But before we do, make sure to hit that like button and subscribe to the channel if you haven’t already!
First in we have ESPN college analyst Fran Fraschilla who said, "I don't think it's fair to put on him this moniker of the best young European to ever come over here.
For those of you who don’t know, Fran had been following Luka’s career very closely since his early days. So this statement coming from a guy like him just tells you how wrong analysts were about how Luka’s career would turn out.
In May 2018, when asked should the number 1 pick be a lock for the Phoenix Suns,
After the season was already well underway in December 2018, Smith seemed to have a major change of heart, retracting on his earlier statements and said “Want to see the rookie of the year? It’s not DeAndre Ayton. It’s this kid, Luka Doncic. That’s who it is. The Rookie of the year. This kid is special. This kid is sensational. Just 19 years of age. First they found Dirk Nowitski 20 years ago, and now they found this kid.”
This was not the first time and this will not be the last time Stephen A has got it wrong about a player. Smith, like many analysts, tend to underestimate the European leagues and players.
Max Kellerman said on ESPN First Take “The only thing that matters is getting the best player. Some of these other guys are good but I’m not talking about Doncic who apparently doesn’t react well to pressure on the ball. They’re not great if you have to be a primary ball handler.”
Later on, after the season, when asked about the best pick, Max replied “Luka Doncic is the best player taken in the draft, including Ben Simmons, in the last three years. He’s a franchise player. All that hype about Luka, he’s the best version of what you could have hoped for. I love watching him play too.”
Max is an amazing boxing commentator, but as a basketball analyst, from saying Luka can’t react well to pressure to now calling him a franchise player? He clearly has a long way to go.
Famous critic and sports analyst Skip Bayless had this to say before the 2018 draft, “that’s my takeaway, he doesn’t pop athletically. Doncic at 6’7” will get exposed for all the inadequacies that Dirk struggled with. Dirk is not a great athlete, Dirk doesn’t have explosive quickness, Dirk isn’t physical. Well that’s what’s going to happen with Doncic. I’m not saying that Luka Doncic is setting the NBA world on fire. I’m not sure he’s going to be a dominating NBA player.
One of the most critical analysts in the NBA, Skip’s probably the most hated. His criticisms of LeBron are famous. When he compared Luka to Dirk, it was clear that he was stereotyping European Basketball.
Sports analyst Chris Broussard, on the show “In the Zone”, when asked about Luka’s comparison with Steve Nash and Larry Bird, had this to say: Several years from now, Luka Doncic might be the best player in the NBA.”
Chris overestimated the use of physical strength in the NBA to win games. Yes, Luka is not of the same build as LeBron, but you don’t get 18 consecutive games with 20 points if you are slow and struggling against defenders.
Former point guard and Skills Unlimited owner Rashad Phillips previously said when asked on his views of Luka Doncic as the number one pick that he “wouldn’t touch him with a 10 feet pole. He is not worthy of a top five consideration. He’s a second round pick.
Most people, even experts, did not know Luka Doncic, even though he was playing on the international scene for 3-4 years.
On the Will Cain show, Will Cain said “no doubt, no hesitation, take Luka Doncic with the number one overall pick. Luka Doncic is the guard wing 2, 3 from Real Madrid and Barcelona, and he’s what? 18 or 19 years old? He spent the last 3 or 4 years since he was 16 playing professional basketball against men. MEN, much higher level than the NCAA.”
Which other NBA players and analysts got it wrong about Luka Doncic? Do you think Luka Doncic is going to be a future Hall of Fame prospect? Thank you for watching another Swish Central video, and join us next time for more NBA basketball content.

The problem is that a lot of analysts don't look overseas and when they do, they often look at players individually, as if they are on an island then try to move that island to the NBA. They don't look at how a player fits and controls the flow of the game.
I watched a lot of Luka when he was in Real. I was convinced that he should have been the #1 overall pick and I was very vocal on Celtics fan forums saying that Boston should trade whatever it took to land Doncic, even if it meant trading Tatum or Brown. I believed this not because of his passing (which is generational) or his scoring (which is elite), but because of how he could control a game. Luka was a player that could speed a game up or slow it down to suit him. That's a very unique gift and something that only a handful of players possess. That was why I didn't have doubts about him in the NBA. Yes, the NBA game is faster, but not when a player can control the pace and tempo the way that Luka can. The game doesn't get away from him because he can speed it up or slow it down as needed.

For anyone mocking analysts... it's bloody hard. Those hindsight experts should write down their predictions before and check how many times they get it right. Predicting how a player performs at the next level is exceedingly difficult since you do not know how individual skills translate unless you see a player performing at that level. Adam Morrison, a beast at college level a total bust in the NBA. A good players like Gilbert Arenas is suddenly killing it as a pro. Go figure. What makes it particularly difficult to predict the success of players like Steph Curry or Luka Doncic is the fact that they are players we have not seen before and there is really no other player you can compare them to. Steph Curry, undersized shooting guard, how do we know that he does not turn out like Jimmy Fredette? Well, he is not just a good shooter he is the best ever in the NBA. How could you possibly predict that? Having said all that, the top European teams like Real Madrid could compete against NBA teams. If someone is MVP of the Spanish league at age 18 it is a safe bet he will be exceptional in the NBA too. That is relatively easy.

All those "great" experts of USA basketball means actually nothing.Stats, criterias of validating player and his potential. For Gods sake it was 3 years ago NBA realized it might be good idea to implement 3 pt shooting on higher frequence. While European top teams has been "lived and died" by 3's for past 20 years. My point is simple, younger player gets better basketball education in Europe, they get to play all positions, makes them understand game of basketball even better.NBA has always worked individually on players to get them to the next level. So never underestimate or hate either. There is great a lot of things to learn from each other.

I’ll be honest I didn’t know a lot about Luka besides the highlight reel and the hype surrounding him. Then I watched the 2021 Clipper playoff series and wow did he hold his own. First he faced an elite defender in Pat Bev (same guy who has humiliated LeBron on many occasions) and made him non-existing. Then he faced a combination of PG13 and Kawhi, two of the best two way wing players in the NBA. He finally forced Kawhi (a two time finals MVP and multiple all defensive team selections) to sacrifice his offense so he can focus on defending Luka. The series was pushed to a game 7 with Luka carrying the team the whole way. The individual awards are going to come easy for him. But the Mavs are going to have to build an entire team around him with a second all-star in order to go deep in to the playoff. If not the Mavs are going to be like the Blazer with Damian Lillard instead of like the 2017-2018 warriors with Stephen Curry. Mad props to Luka from a diehard Clipper fan.

Not to be cocky but I called it when he came out when Atlanta traded I seen that it was a good spot for him and a good spot for Trae. I can't make out what it's saying but those guys have long careers ahead of them. Luka is truly amazing with the basketball he's almost a walking triple double every night people look at him and judge him oh he's not that athletic but yet he embarrasses at least two to three people every night he has hidden speed has three ball is improving is passing we are already know is unbelievable for a 6'7" point guard. It's only been a few seasons and I'm pretty sure they're going to give Luka another player who will help him advance to another level in the playoffs next season they can't keep asking him to do it at all by himself. The season will be here before you know it and he is so fun to watch. Now on NBA 2k21 I'm almost at level 33 seven more to go till I get invincible Luka.

some of these flunkies are just basketball comedians. spending two seconds listening to them is three seconds lost.

and that's why you should only lend your ear to people who played and are currently playing in the NBA and not to these people who just sit on a chair and talk like they know what they're talking about.

@@swishcentral1 its weird how can they call themselves analysts when many of them doesn’t have first hand experience playing in the NBA or even college ball. I only watch NBA on TNT, All The Smokes and podcasts manned by ex and current NBA players. ESPN is 🤷🏻‍♂️

I feel like Ayton and Luka are like Hakeem and Jordan. Even though GOAT was third overall pick in 1984. nobody fired shots on Houston for picking Hakeem. So nowadays people are not complaining on Suns picking Ayton over Luka because Ayton is also hell of a player himself

The 3 point shot didn't exist earlier, so you can't compare the points that well.
