I grew up in Ridgewood, NJ, where Bucky used to play regularly (in the 70s and 80s), and I remember when the newspaper ads started to mention that his young son John would be joining him. I had no clue then that they were world class performers. Just thought of them as the "locals." Loved this clip; love their extraordinary playing.

I worked with my Dad, I was a drummer and he played great jazz piano. We had great times, especially when I stopped rushing!!!! Miss you Dad, you were one of the best! I met John Pizzarelli about 15 years ago in Las Vegas, great evening, great music and a really nice man!

Just got back from watching Bucky performing in Roswell. To sit a few feet away from this legend and watch while he played with Django-like authority - wow! With Eddie Erickson and Mike Sunjka these three were World Class ++

Saw John in concert at Goshen College a couple of years ago. About half way through the second set he asked if we would like to meet his dad. A stage hand helped Bucky across the stage to his chair as the crowd went wild. He may have needed a hand walking across the stage but his playing was amazing. A totally unexpected and wonderful gift!

Such wonderful companionship. Not too many father/son relationships like this one. Bucky and John, the late Doc and Merle Watson, et. al. What wonderful memories they must have. Bucky signed his book for me. Such a nice guy.

I grew up in NYC and as a teen in the 1960s used to see Bucky crossing the street or coming out of a music store here and there, carrying his guitar case and I'd just say hi sometimes. I wasn't musically mature enough at that time to actually strike a useful conversation (for him), so I never did. But I was lucky to live where you'd frequently see famous musicians just out walking somewhere. Oddly, in my 20s I and my girlfriend lived right around the block from Miles Davis's Apt. We'de be takin' a walk and frequently saw boxes and envelopes sticking out of the garbage pail in front of his brownstone on W 77, addressed to him ! He'd come flyin' around the corner in his silver (was it?) Ferrari sometimes, too..No biggie. Just kind of an exciting part of New York City life then. Probaby still is. I'm in L.A. 40 years now. Here it's movie/TV stars, whom I'm too mature now, to talk with !!

My dad passed away in 2008, and there's not a day that goes by that I'm not thankful for him and my mom instilling in me the LOVE of GOOD MUSIC, especially Jazz! Seeing the Pizzarelli's together playing makes me feel good inside, because the greats are all fading away, and listening to them play and inner act with one another reminds me of better times, simpler times, good times...

Simpler times maybe Yes definitely , But harder music back then the chords everything? I came here because im not encyclopedia on bebop jazz theory scienctifically im well founded Not as I thought sounded coming from thrash deathtech maybe fusion, confusion would be correct necessarlly i sold my surround sound and found already what I had lost and forgot in a land time bought

Kudos to his brother, Martin Pizzarelli, playing the bass. He always seems to get left out of the family, "father-son" discussion.

    • @epf1961

Not "old" school, the ONLY school. The standards and jazz classics are timeless, and so is this style of playing. Calling it "old" can be construed as a negative, but this music is the most positive thing in the universe....

Love the Pizzarelli family, have seen both many times in NJ and on the west coast. As a kid, I remember Martha Chang's parents joint, Four Seas, next to the bowling alley in Madison Plaza. First place I ever had szechuan cooking...that place had to be one of the very first authentic, non-Cantonese Chinese restaurants in NJ, and I am sure the first in Morris County.

I was SO FORTUNATE to see/hear Bucky and John in Florida at the "Top Of The World Nightclub" way back in 1980 and again in 1981, if my memory serves me well. Also saw Marion McPhartland there! I was so happy to have been able to see them all live and really up close, as that nightclub was a fairly small vnue. God bless Bucky, Johnny, and Martin! Thanks for the memories!
