Ahh yes, fly fishing for steelhead. It's awesome. There you are in your waders, up to your thighs in cool, clear running water. The nicotine buzz from your first cigar of the day is passing. The first beer of the day is fizzing away nicely in your stomach. Must be time for your second cigar. As you light up, you glance at your watch. It's seven o'clock in the morning.
Hey Dylan, I know you asked this question 2 years ago, but for spey rod and reel set ups. I am currently using a Hardy Demon 9/10 13'9 Spey rod paired with the Hardy Ultralite 10000. On the reel it goes 215yrds of 30 yrd backing double uni'd to 50lb OPST Lazar running line then I create a loop to loop connection by making and tying down a double surgeons know, then I loop on my Skagit head (720gr Aiflo Skagit F.I.S.T). Then I attach a variety of sink tips (T-8, T-11, T-14, T-17) in a variety of lengths (6ft, 7.5ft, 10ft, 12.5ft, 15ft) depending on water conditions. Since I used this rod for chinooks and steelhead, I use a 50lb 1.5ft butt section of Maxima Ultragreen Monofilament then blood knotted to a 3.5 leader of 30lb Maxima Ultragreen Monofilament line.
Ok ive watched this video a couple times. I even drove up there 2 years ago to catch steelhead. what ive yet to figure out is how you drove to that side of the river?
This has always been a debated topic artic char, dolly , bull. I’ve spoken to fisheries in the north and south and it’s a different story from every mouth. I’ve caught all and my answer is yes artic char is trout family. Great show Tom !
@@curtisballer688 Its not ''debated'' char is its own sub species called Salvelinus en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salvelinus Brook trout, lake trout, dolly, bull etc are part of it. salvelinus foutaise (fish of springs aka brook trout).. People are just misinformed because the salvelinus family has been recognized over a century 1836 by j richardson ..... whats even more amazing Not even rainbow trout are part of the trout family as of 1989, its taxonomy was moved to the Oncorhynchus family with cutthroat... .... but it sorta makes sense considering you have rainbows origins involved with all so many types of pacific salmon and migrating like them. Like its the odd one out...... now saying charr is Salmonidae with all the rest is probably what he means but its not part of sub species
Skeena River was literally my backyard Being native I fished all summer long and lived off it all winter long. Smoking salmon was so delicious. I really do miss it.
Idk if it’s just me or does Tom lowkey not seem to like this guy lol and when he was explaining what structure to look for non of it made sense ahahahah a
I live in Prince Rupert. The Skeena is my home stream. The scenery along Highway 16 is spectacular and worth the trip for that alone.
I would love to fish there someday...great video!
Haha I think this may be the most animated (and salty) Tom has ever been on video. I loved the heckling about the 'dolly' 😂
Great tom.. I like this video

I plan to go there soon. I’m definitely not using a Spey rod.
What kind of reel was he using?
I'd have no problem living in Terrace, I'm sure I'd find something to do. :)
i lived up there for a while well putting in a water pipeline on the mountain. spent more time on the river then at work!!!
People lay in bed and dream about this ? what ! Well in any case enjoyed the video. Good night :-)
These are wild steelhead... not many places in the world left to fish for them. The skeena is legendary. So ya some people do dream of steelhead.
Sweet vid

@@williamcooke6056 LOL, No one willing to give that up? Maybe he could try Google Earth, I hear that works pretty good. :)
Great video, a shame its cluttered with ad videos.
That is NOT a UNI-KNOT. It's definitely a Non-slip Mono Loop.
Great dialogue back and forth.
