Hello Phoenix Rising developer here. I want to add some context to what was talked about in the video here since it seems like some people have the wrong idea of what happened. The team that was working on the game is not the original team. We inherited the project from a different team after they wanted to stop working on the game completely. If we did not inherit it the game would have be officially dead long before now. The reason there were no additional episodes released is because the state the game was originally released in was a mess. I should know I am the lead programmer after all. Outside of the memory leaks that caused the slow downs that forced people to reboot the game after playing it for awhile there were numerous issues both from a story perspective and a technical perspective. The team tried very hard to work off of what the original team had made (for about a year) but due to how custom the underlying games systems were it was basically a house of cards waiting to fall. It's a miracle the original project works how it does. Due to these issues the decision was made to do a remake of episode 1 in the current modern version of essentials. Doing this would allow us to fix all of the previous mentioned issues as well as expand to other platforms such as Mac and Linux which the previous version of the game would have never worked under due to the custom encryption relaying on the Win32 API. A significant amount of work was put into this remake of episode 1. Code was be entirely rewritten from scratch, the story was being revamped, maps were being remade. The team was already nervous before the relic castle shutdown due to how aggressive Nintendo was in recent months, especially with the takedown of Yuzu. When relic castle fell it was the straw that broke the camels back for a lot of us in terms of us wanting to do a Pokémon game. We were doing this as a fan project in our free time. Were were putting in an extreme amount of effort to make something that could be shut down at any time and we just could not do that any more. So that's the story of how the Phoenix fell........but the game is called Phoenix Rising after all so that is not the end. In the announcement we made we talked about how the strengths of the game were it's narrative driven gameplay and it's original ideas and that we were not giving up entirely, that while yes the Pokémon version of the game is dead, we were going to take the story we crafted and make our own IP. With this the majority of the original team decided to leave to a development server to avoid possible harassment. I can not reveal details on the current direction of the game, it's progress or anything else. Not because we don't have anything but because we are not ready to share anything at this time but I'll tell you this. The game that we are going to release as our own IP is going to be more unique and better then what the community has seen so far. When the time is ready we will share what we have been working on. The Phoenix has fallen but it will rise from the ashes. ~InitSprite~ - Lead Programmer
Legends arceus was a breath of fresh air, so I agree but obviously one can compare that to something as beautiful as Zelda and say that it's not as good visually. Both points are fair but it was a step in the right direction for gamefreak.
Thanks for the kind words on the project. The original team were the nicest and most talented people I’ve had the pleasure of collaborating with. Lifelong friendships were made. We worked really hard on it and had a lot of ideas but in the end development was too much so we handed it off. Curious to see where the new team takes the project.
If I recall, the original was made by a different set of people, and those who remained/a new group of people only recently began working on it again before relic castle got shut down. Due to the time that passed they were originally going to remake the game from the ground up to fit the newer version of Pokémon essentials, but after relic castle got shut down their plans changed. They did technically decide to stop developing the fan game, as in they really made the decision to detach the game from the Pokémon IP all together instead of stoping development, as they had so much story and ideas that they didn’t want to waste, which probably works out as they would have had to remake the game anyway. So, it’s not completely dead, but if they continue it won’t be a fan game anymore, rather it’s own game entirely.
Honestly sounds like excuses since they would not have started to begin with if this was the case. Not saying that they won't have an actual understandable reason, but "being afraid of Gamefreak" is probably not it.
@@PuchimonExtremeNo that’s a, pretty good reason. Even the Radical Red team was somewhat nervous of GF banning their game, I’m not sure if youve seen how aggressive theyve been since Covid. But they’ve been taking down do many fangames, too much imo, they were already aggressive few years back which is how Uranium got shut down (was a fresh fangame with fakemons btw) and apparently the lead creator made a statement on this in the comments. Imagine putting months of work day and night out for one email to take it all away, that’s a scary thought.
God why can't TPC and Nintendo just let us have fun. For people who make such fun games they sure are the fun police of the video game industry. Nobody is going to stop buying their games just because we're also playing a free rom hack. Makes me want to stop giving them my money when they act this way though.
I played this beautiful game 6 years ago to the end of the first episode, finished every sidequest and maxed out the levels. I remember a bug that made the player fight a Kyogre in a sidequest Was upset that the game was seemingly abandoned until I saw the top programmer's comment on this video So thanks for bringing the hype for a new Phoenix Rising. I can't wait
What really bothers me is the quality non pokemon devs bring to this franchise. Quality that gamefreak/nintendo seem to throw out of the window when working on pokemon main games
If game freak would just release a game like this they would make MILLIONS of dollars. There is such a big market for these 2d charmers that people would eat it up instantly. Design 150 new mon and throw some regional forms in there and it would be better than anything game freak has made in the past 8 years
That's not what today's kids want, though. It's what the grown-ups want who played the first games. In the end, it's about money and pleasing the group of people that you could profit off the most.

It seems that there is some miscommunication in the community about GF and fangames, so I will try to correct something. Pokemon Uranium, which is now a "banned Pokemon game," was never actually banned; the dev removed the download links themselves. GF just requested to remove links from 3rd party sites, not the uranium site. Devs removed it to "respect Nintendo wishes," they say it themselves. Also, Pokemon uranium was released in unlucky timing, like 3-4 months before the sun and moon, and Pokemon 20th anniversary. We have some older Pokemon romchacks that were deleted, which are Pokemon Glaze, Flora Sky, and 2 more. That name, I don't remember. The thing is, those games were like 10 years old at this point. Also, there are more fangames than that that are a lot more popular. pokemon reborn, insurgence, xenoverse even pokemon infinite fusion If Nintendo is so against fangames, how is it possible that these games are not deleted? Even after their debut, Nintendo has not deleted any fangames for a very long time, and Relic Castle didn't get a Cease and Desist but a DMCA. Thoughts are different, so as far as I know, it's not really confirmed that it was sent from Nintendo. If someone wants more info, I recommend the Ayrei video about it titled "The Truth About Banned Pokemon Fangames." It's a good video.
I believe its from pokemon mystery dungeon explorers of sky; should be temporal tower, spire or hidden land. one of these.. that is an awesome game btw
I played this game and was SO disappointed that the game just ended after a couple of towns, it was so good, I really wished it was finished. The game uses tiles from anyone and everyone(some not even with permission), BUUUT the main source of the prettiest ones are from "Magiscarf" on deviantart. They're practically a legend in the pokemon fandev community.
How risky is it to make a fan game, a really good one, so good even Nintendo would want to take it down, or...why does Nintendo take down games HEAR ME OUT (which you cant lol 😂), Can anyone let me know that I can make a better like this game but with any copyright, I can code, but I'd really like the reassurance if the game doesn't feel like a cardboard cut out. Any discord I can check? Any online community or channel I can get educated on, since the internet are the people and the people are the internet so I'd hope you guys know what should be added in this game or not. Thanks for the inspiration creator this game is great!
Just name the fking games fakemon ,change the poke all up and use only fakemon. What's with yal? Why do they always do that? Risk all their hard work just to use the name pokemon...
