  • Final of mens coxed pairs Lucerne regatta 1989
The best coxed pair race you'll ever see (actually could be the best race you'll ever see)
    Lane 1 Yugoslavia
    Lane 2 East Germany A
Lane 3 Italy (Abbagnale brothers and cox Di Capua)
Lane 4 Great Britain (Simon Berrisford and Steve Redgrave)
    Lane 5 East Germany B
    Lane 6 Poland
Listen out for the collective gasp from the crowd when the view of the finish line first goes up on the big screen. (Also note that the television finish line doesnt quite line up with the line of buoys)

I love watching the Abagnale brothers... they had the support of the crowd that day... how good were they how emotional the whole thing... people have to watch the Italian narration of the race... it would be amazing

Wow, was that close! Also as a former cox'n, I freely admit that the 2+ is the dumbest event ever.

That’s Redgrave stroking the Brit boat, yes? He already had two Olympic gold medals in ‘89, 4- LA and 2- Seoul.

Yes that's Redgrave. His LA gold was in the 4+

I think the 2+ was a great event taken away too soon... the event was for the real strong men of the sport and technically the best at moving a heavy load ... just imagine the fun you could have with 3 people in a boat ...

Worlds was in Bled, is this European champs or just a international regatta, before my time and I'm lost

Lucerne was the biggest regatta apart from the world champs each year (and in fact still is)

World championships 1989 was in Bled, and the 2+ A final is here th-cam.com/video/OzFlr2yGhIs/w-d-xo.html This race was Lucerne regatta, which in the modern era is now normally World cup 3. But before FISA invented World cup regattas Lucerne was the culmination of the European regatta circuit
