It's a remarcable point the fact that a great artist, a great musician, master on his instrument, can have the humbleness to stare, fascinated , the way other artist shows his art. I can't think of many artists being capable of showing admiration with genuine curiosity. A very domesticade ego is needed, obviously.
3:40 That's not even special effects, they're actually flying through the air on that little round stage. Ravi Shankar never needed a tour bus, he just came into your city like that
This must be the most beautiful crossover in the world of music strings. I love flamenco and ragas and this short interview fills me up of joy and graceful. Love both of them.
Return thanks to those who thanked me for the video description. I am trying to answer those who asked few questions. Pandit ji is playing Raga Bhairavi in Drut teentaal. Tabalia is Ud Alla Rakha (father of Ud Zakir Hussain). Flamenco has more resemblance with Rajasthani Gypsy folk songs than Indian Classical music. They sing few basic ragas and use 'khartal' which has resemblance with castanet playing. (Watch the gypsies of Rajasthan video from my channel) Though only the "chalan" of Bhairavi is used in Flamenco but the Rajasthani gypsies use other ragas like Yaman and Khammaj. The scale used in Flamenco is Phrygian Dominant which is not Bhairavi but Basant mukhari (in North india) and Vakulavarnam (in South India). But the ambience is like Bhairavi specially in the Avarohan. Those who want to see them playing together..... Pandit ji is not a fusion musician. He restricted himself to pure Indian classical playing but has composed fusion tracks as well as for Sitar concertos. He only played in one fusion track in his life in Tana Mana called West Eats Meat as per my knowledge.
Vinay Seth Yes, I know about his life and works. I have the album where he worked as a composer, vocalist... he played for a composed part but a lot has been played by his son Shubho too. I meant he didn't jam in fusion concerts except for the project with Menuhin but that is not fusion per se...
+SobersChatterjee Hi, first of all thanks so much for the video and the great great info on it. I'm really interested in flamenco and indian music, and wanted to ask if you could perhaps recommend some sources of info on these matters as i would really like to know a lot more about it. Thanks again!
that indina music and flamenco have comon roots is no secret. It is well known that the gypsy ethnic came from india to eurpe in the middle ages, there are documents in spain that certify that. At least in spain in school, that is general knowledge.
i love all kinds of music, but when choosing instrumentalists/ artists/ culture and tradition bearers I can hardly think of a more accurate pair. Absolute love.
Masters at their best. Ravishankar summed it up so beautifully. Those who argue about the similarities should see this video. These are maestros speaking themselves. And of course, Ustad Allah Rakha?
I think the arb music is more close to flamenco da the indian... yet the phrygian dominant is the key that joins all different styles : flamenco + arab + indian . It´s like the DNA essence and from that different moods and styles developed... but the indian music has some really particular things that make it even more complex
@triofdoom Oh! Yes, of course .... How could I have forgotten this? John McLaughlin was a student of Pt Ravi Shankar and later his association with Paco de Lucia resulted some astonishing guitar projects. P.S. : That was Ustad Alla Rakha (father of Ud. Zakir Hussain).
Thnx indeed thinking that stars today are butt shaking wearing heavy gold chains or using vocoder and two tone music makes you admire what real musicians are made of
I shall even embrace death happily while listening to these artists. Love you both. Damn I wished I was born in their era and witnessed these masters live
these are magical moments whosoever witnesses this footage .. magic happening right there world of concepts and fundamentals getting cleared by just witnessing that moment of interaction... Thank you for sharing
If we join together this great musicians, we have a perfect combination. Paco de Lucía played with gypsies influences and mediterranian music. Paco de Lucía D.E.P.
Gracias. Thank you so much for sharing this. Will subscribe to your channel, very interested in learning more about Indian music. Thanks again brother,
This is a great video, but just to point out one thing. Sabicas lived for 20 years in New York and was doing solo concert performances for years there and in other parts of the States long before Paco started touring. Nice upload - cheers.
Sobers, Many thanks for this I have watched it a few times now. As you know I have a deep love for both music forms. I think your comment about Flamenco being closer to Rajasthani music is correct, even the dancing has close similarities.
Patricia Santos On the left of Ravishankar, is the late Maestro of a percussion instrument called as Tabla, and to the right I am sorry I dont know the name of the artist, is on Tambura, which provides harmony, provides sustenance to the music, just like a rythm guitar, but in almost trance.
@emeraldomusik I explained the whole raga-scale relation (including the mistake) in the video information. I think you missed that. Anyway thanks for the appreciation......
From 5:29 to 5:40 .... classic. Love Paco's guitar playing, the only flamenco player player who was technically and emotionally ahead of him was Andres Segovia. Some much skill and emotion. Respect and it's sad that both of them have passed away...
Andres Segovia was not a flamenco player. Moreover he disliked the new flamenco (but loved the old style). And speaking about techniques..... no body was or is as powerful and beautiful as Paco. (though Grisha is very close)

How interesting it is that Ravi's daughter, Anoushka, made an album dedicated to the relations between raag and flamenco as well.
Which album are you referring to?
Traveller?
What is it called? And does her sister Nora Jones have a roll?
I never knew Paco De Lucia and Ravi met. Both wonderful players.
Ustaad Allah Rakha on the tabla and Pt Ravi Shankar on the sitar... absolute ecstasy!
Ustaad Allah Rakha was amazing!!
It's a remarcable point the fact that a great artist, a great musician, master on his instrument, can have the humbleness to stare, fascinated , the way other artist shows his art. I can't think of many artists being capable of showing admiration with genuine curiosity. A very domesticade ego is needed, obviously.
Practically transcends space and time...even the ancestors and gods paused to enjoy this performance. Masterpiece of human achievement
Ravi Shankar will be missed but his music lives on. One of my most favorite performances of all time.
Percussion man is insane amazing
Ustaad Alla Rakha, the father of Ustaad Zakir Hussain
3:40 That's not even special effects, they're actually flying through the air on that little round stage. Ravi Shankar never needed a tour bus, he just came into your city like that
R.I.P. Paco... we music lovers around the globe are still under shock he died on 25th Febr in Mexico by heart attack... what a huge loss.

+thefun frame There's no disputing this!
@@conorhughes6018 no, but the roots of flamenco are not gypsy, or at least is not only gypsy. the same thing on indian music

Masters at their best. Ravishankar summed it up so beautifully. Those who argue about the similarities should see this video. These are maestros speaking themselves. And of course, Ustad Allah Rakha?
Also they should watch the film Latcho Drom (1993)

All greats are together. Priceless video.

proud of him he is a legend he makes in proud.
wow!!! the play starting from 3:25 onwards between Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustaad Allah Rakha...indescribable
What an amazing performance!
impossible musician... what a divinity... we miss you a lot..
best part of this video is at 0:40 - Ravi shakes his head like no fucking way this is happening right now lol
That's definitely not what that meant. Have you seen him play? Lmao
He enjoys this moment with the look of the musician he is and because flamenco is a captivating music from a melodic and technical point of view
Lol
😊 Nope. Indians do the "head wobble" to agree and to show appreciation too
Thnx indeed thinking that stars today are butt shaking wearing heavy gold chains or using vocoder and two tone music makes you admire what real musicians are made of
GREAT!
Josiah Heng: The tabla player is Alla Rakha, tabla god and also father of Zakir Hussain.
Wow....absolute music.
To bring such an instrument to this level of mastery is awesome, he gives it another dimension

A PACO DE LUCÍA
Adiós Paco de Lucia!
Callada al fin, tu guitarra,
Te llora triste y sombría...
Con mano de ángel o garra,
Como de fiera bravía,
Supiste echarnos al fuego
Adonde el Infierno ardía,
Y rescatarnos en vilo
con tus manos bendecidas!...
¿Quien podría en esta noche
Homenajearte blandiendo
Tu instrumento en tal derroche
De notas y de silencios
Como sólo tú lo hacías?
¿Quien, a pronunciar tu nombre
Sin llorarte, intentaría?
¿Quien de todos los mortales
Muerto al fin, te creería,
Cuando aún vibran los oídos,
Las almas y los ijares
De todo el que al escucharte
Siente en sus venas la vida?
Paco, comienza tu gira,
y gira tu corazón,
Que te aguarda Camarón
Con su garganta encendida.
Que el cielo se hará tablao,
Y la nube diapasón,
Paco, lleva tu guitarra,
Que te aguarda Camarón...!
Amazing!
excelente video...
