  • Welcome back we've been waiting. It goes without saying that 2019 was a bit more challenging than usual. Now that's in the past and we are focused on going forward. Brittany and I have a new addition to our little family and we're constantly working to improve our efficiency on the farm. Our intern is tired of hearing me say it but the focus is to diversify and create multiple sources of income, makes more sense than putting all your eggs in one basket. So if you enjoy updates on the daily operations of a farm that's raising; cows, crops and kids stay tuned. I don't put a lot of time into editing my videos I try to keep them as raw and real as they are when they are filmed. I do tend to sit and explain what's going on and the reasons why we do what we do the way that we do it. Plus the occasional voice over video while the work is actively going on. So make sure to Subscribe, Like, and Comment if you want to stay up to date on our 2020 farm year.

    A sure sigh of a good Mechanic 👨‍🔧 . Don’t read the instructions, look 👀 at the pretty pictures!! Happy 😃 you did not burn the baler up. Thanks,good video.

    Sorry to see gear box in pieces on the work bench, good thing there's no hay on the ground to bail up so you can get bailer back to good as new,thanks for the update Travis

    I should go for a new gearbox,this time next year when grain prices and hay prices have recovered in price you will wish you had bought a new one. Enjoyed the video thanks travis

    It will come as no surprise that I remember you guys switching that gearbox around to allow 1000 rpm input. The fact that it has lasted as long as it has without major issues is a big surprise. Getting down into the guts of the project seems to be your knack (or one of many). Isn't it great when your younger brother can give you a helpful tip every now and then? Thanks for the video.

    I would definitely go with just new parts, a little green paint and it would look brand new again

    I understand your thinking, Travis. But, I had to laugh at what, Ryan said because I was thinking the EXACT same thing! Sometimes writing the check is the best course of action. Then again it's your money and your decision. Good luck!

    The comments are really unique next time I have a breakdown can I link the video to your channel? Looks like I can pretty well get a diagnosis and instructions from all of your subscribers and viewers... on how to fix about anything! Great videos always thanks

    Now now boys lol. I've seen that type of failure before. The lateral thrust on the shafts puts pressure on the snap ring, it wears them breaks then starts sending metal through everything else. Could have been worse, luckily it wasnt

    At first I was thinking failure from changing the box around to 1000 shifting the load to
    The other side of the gears and bearings. But now I agree with your theory after seeing it. The part with Ryan Talking about the camera settings was funny lol

    Sounds like you did the right thing at the time you saw smoke.i have found the same thing myself.glad it sounds like it will be I hope under a grand but knowing dealers. Bet it will be around 1200 for the parts. Hope my guess is totally wrong too

  • @geraldgaitsch2068

    Check you drive shaft and make sure it slides freely sounds like there was some end load on it to break the snap ring.

    We lost a rotor gear box on the combine, it ended up being cheaper to buy a reman than buying shafts, gears and bearings for ours

  • @robertdaly9036
    @robertdaly9036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Looks to me that the thrust bearing failed and then damaged the gears...
    Be interesting what 'slones' verdict is..
    Nice video as always. 👍👍

      @robertdaly9036 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Acer AcresCheers for the the reply, we'll see what "slones" say was the problem, we call a "snap ring " this side of the pond a "cir-clip".
      Time will tell...

    • @FoolOfATuque
      @FoolOfATuque 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Acer Acres I think the more interesting question here is why did a snap ring made of spring steel shatter like that? Probably made brittle by all of the heat ups and cool downs on the baler over the years.

    :( well although you might want a new used baler, i'd want to keep the one you with have with rebuilt parts, you just did the roller. Cool new chain. P/m and lithium grease just like i use for my bike chain. almost no dirt. cool video. Show us what you get. Good to have your brother as the camera man! Used his bag to shop at the farmers market today!

      $700 off of a new box. Doesn't matter in the end though when the gearbox is ultimately trashed anyway

    Was curious if you guys ever get your bearings or seals from the auto parts store or off the internet vs. buying from the dealer? The numbers stamped on them are universal and can save you a lot of money.

  • @tiredoldmechanic1791
    @tiredoldmechanic1791 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Looks like a weak box for what it's expected to do. There should be bolted on plates to hold the bearings, not snap rings.

  • @duanedean3256
    @duanedean3256 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Crazy they used a snap ring on that. Doesnt sound like much, but when its running under load, that is a lot of lateral load pushing on that little surface. Why wouldnt it fail? Thats like just waiting.

    Nice Vid Travis! Also nice to see Ryan helping out and teaching his big brother a thing or two about how to shoot video! lol Honestly, it's always great to see you both on camera together and doing stuff, be it on your channel or his... maybe there is a 3rd channel option with the two of you... ;)

  • @brittblanton8342
    @brittblanton8342 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hey Travis did you have the extended warranty on it?😂 All jokes aside it is extremely aggravating when something like that happens, it could have been worse the baler could have caught on fire. Good luck stay safe 👍

    If I were you, I would buy a new gear box and then rebuild that one for a spare.

  • @watomb
    @watomb 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I would just replace the gear box. It’s sounds expensive until you have hay sitting on the ground getting wet because you broke down again. Also the gear box ring grove looked damaged in the video but angle sucked. Do you have a local machine shop they can fix it for 1200 I’m guessing.

    Aren't you glad that cap was plastic? If it was metal you would of pressured up the gearbox and cracked the gear box instead, but you melted a cap that is only 40 bucks. Cast housings won't take any pressure so they probably chose a cap that was low yield to protect the box overall. I see a lot of armchair farmers here telling Travis to spend an additional 700 dollars on a new gear box. If the gearbox is in good shape and no cracks, seal surfaces are in good shape, and bearing race locations are in good shape why on earth would he spend an additional 700 dollars on the repair? One more thing when you talk about gloves the black raven nitrile gloves from Amazon are pretty amazing.

  • @jeremy.billigton
    @jeremy.billigton 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    who gives a fk if ur wearing gloves ive done so many jobs without gloves bc there's j no other way to get the job done
