    I know this is 8 years old. Today i bought a 1996 E 300D 187,000mi and it has the exact same problems. I tested all connections and couldn't find, but i see you just touched-up the solder joints. I just did that and tomorrow i will install and try it. fingers crossed! thanks for the excellent video on this.

    Doug, I just stumbled upon your video because it linked up to my W210 video. Ironically, I'm having the similar "stop light switch" woes. Last summer my ABS, BAS, and ESP lights all came on like a Christmas tree on a long trip...and sure enough my cruise control stopped working. After research I put in a new stop light switch and it was fixed...until about a month ago...same problem again.
    I'm going to try resoldering my relay and I'll post back with the results!
    thanks.

      Gallup Journey Test Drives i know you posted this comment about 5 years ago but i'd like to ask did the resoldering fix your abs/bas/esp issue? Because from what i've heard it might also be caused by faulty abs motor brushing? I've been thinking about resoldering my k40 on my w210 E430 4wd '00 but been quite sceptical because i checked the board and it seems fine. Any help or thoughts is appreciated!

      you guys should scan the OBD2 port for actual codes.
      "Christmas-Trees" (many module crash fault) can be triggered by low charge voltage... as I've witnessed.
      Use "workshop menu" to display and monitor battery voltage while driving , specially daytime (without the headlights load) at cruising speed... watch it get low courtesy of junko battery management software (ALT OK) !

    K40 failure can also cause a good crank/no start condition where the immobilizer kicks in. On older 210’s, the red and green lights with alternate on the mirror when trying to crank.
    Very good video!

    I just had an issue where the glow plug indicator light would not show and no action from the glow plug relay module. I know there's a fuse on that k40 relay. Then I remembered last Spring having the error messages appear and things go wonky on the dash, but the moment passed and I forgot all about it. Since the glow plug relay module checked out from testing, I decided to give this a go. As I looked over the K40 relay module circuitry and inspected the solder joints, I was skeptical, but since I did see some smaller electronics in the mix of those relays and bus bars, I thought maybe. I checked the diodes and they were proper. The resistors usually burn up, so I left that inspection visual while noting that they looked new, so, long story short, I went ahead and reflowed all the solder joints, and reassembled with the reward of my glow circuit working as expected again. still strange to me. That K40 is well engineered and kinda beautiful. I still hope it wasn't a happy coincidence in the form of an intermittent happy moment. Time will tell. Either way, something was nudged right!

    I bought W210 E270 2000 model with lots of bugs coming up on computer. ESP, BAS, ABS, lights, oil sensor. While driving ESP, BAS and ABS came up on screen. Sometimes it was enough just to spin the wheels to get gone, sometimes after restarting the engine it was gone. I bought the car for restauration, so I knew I will be fixing it. I ordered new headlights and LED tail lights. What happened all lights problems were gone, but ESP, ABS and BAS came up. Was strange, but it took few hours for car to consume the changes and it fixed it self, ever since then I had problems with that. Then I checked all the possible fuses, changed the burned ones and I got my horn back, but the guy who I bought from said I have to buy new. So if anyone gets ESP problem, check the light in the back, spray the wire connections, check if everything works. 2 weeks ago I put my car on diagnostics and the only problem was the oil filter, which I will order new, no other problems. Just check up your car in a while and it will be perfect. No need to throw away money in the service

    What´s the heat got to do with it? Have the same model, I´ve learned from your videos, thank you very much sir

    • @DouglasSims
      @DouglasSims  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Here's the theory as I understand it. Over time, the circuits, as with everything else in the car, are subjected to many heating and cooling cycles. Different materials expand at different rates, so eventually the solder, which expands and contracts faster than the phenolic material of the board itself, will develop tiny internal cracks. These cracks can become so severe that they inhibit the flow of electricity through the solder, breaking the electrical connection. Re-heating the solder allows it to re-flow and fill the voids created by the cracks, making the electrical connection work again.
      Thank you, and thanks for subscribing!

      I have had the same problem. Sometimes the anti-theft system gets confused. The red and green lights indicate that this is happening to your car. Lock the driver's door with the key from outside, unlock it, and the car will start!

    • @hingahmohammadally8181

    • @DouglasSims

      Probably so, but I don't know what they are. The lock/unlock-with-the-key method has worked for me (and the first time it happened I was very perplexed indeed until I figured it out). Good luck!

      +Douglas Sims where did you get it, and what brand oh, and, what did you pay for it?

    • @acblueeagle
      @acblueeagle 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      By the way, I tried the soldering as you suggested. Didn't fully melt at any point. I did get some of the contacts hot, and I noticed the AM band on my radio came on quickly without a lot of static. But, what I did do was go online and where I found the cost of a new Relay Module was only $124. I ordered one, and then before I got it, I chanced to meet a Mercedes mechanic at the airport in Houston, Texas. He wore a shirt with the Mercedes emblem. I asked him if he replaced the relay module often, to which he replied, "All the time." Well, I got the part this afternoon, put it in myself, based on what I saw you do. My car runs better than ever. Truly amazing. I pass this along for anyone who may benefit from what I learned and did.
