  • Today we're checking out an awesome simulation of steam engines called Steam Engine Simulator! This is an amazing physics based simulation that allows us to examine how a steam engine uses boiler pressure to create rotational movement from a piston setup! Be sure to check out the author of this amazing sim AngeTheGreat: • Simulating a Steam Eng...

My knowledge of steam engines is not complete so if I said something incorrect or you have something I missed be sure to let me know in the comments below! I've learned a lot through engineering and making videos with Hyce but obviously there is still a lot about steam systems that I need to educate myself on! Especially how to make a working valve gear...

You are able to adjust the temperature of the fire in the simulator, this is why you had difficulty maintaining a steady pressure. There is also an electric motor to avoid stalling when starting the engine.

The thing that's left out of this video is Ange the Great made this as part of a series on his sound simulations. All the sounds made by the engine are generated by a fluid model running, they're not canned sounds. A lot of his series focuses on the sounds for car engines, anywhere from I4 engines to V8 engines to 9 cylinder radials, and even a Wankel rotary.

    • @Ronald.Golleher

Also all the parts of the engine are physical models, physically interacting.

You made vacuum because you quickly cooled steam and it condensed to water, which has lower volume
You can make the engine run backwards this way too! But you will have 1 atmosphere of pressure difference at max, so it won't be very powerfull (kinda like very first steam engine, it was working with vacuum too)

You know what would be really cool? A game where you can build a steam engine out of different components. Different valve gear, cylinder sizes and boilers and stuff. Then all those variables would determine how the engine runs. You could go from a little single acting, single cylinder engine to a ginormous naval steam engine. On that note, check out some of the stupendous naval steam engines of the ocean liners of old! Next level engineering.

I like to (in hell mode) fill the tank full and close it off. Max fire until max temp is reached. Then slowly build up rpm with the smallest amounts of throttle until speed builds up then just go wide open for full max rpm. With the temp maxed you can keep maxed psi for longer to achieve the higher speeds. If you just max temp and psi then hammer the throttle wide open you won’t achieve the best speed.

As @arandomperson8465 said, the boiling points of all liquids are dependent on pressure.
At atmospheric pressure, water boils at 100 C, which is what is taught in school. What is not really taught is that at higher pressures, the boiling point increases
