  • Hanna and Owlet last time together at the nest. Beautiful moments shortly before the event.
    📌 Kassikakk::Eagle Owl Estonia
    The Eagle owl nest camera is situated in Northern Estonia. We’re following this nest with a camera for the first time. In 2021, this pair had no chicks, but they had been breeding successfully for several consecutive years before that. Usually the female lays 2-3, rarely 4 white eggs, in late March - early April and the chicks hatch in late April or early May.
    In 2022 the Eagle owls don't nest in front of the camera. They only visited nest platform, but eggs were laid in other nest. No chicks hatched.
    In 2023 camera was installed in January, nest was visited by adults like year before, but eggs laid in front of cam.
    1st egg March 23, 2nd egg March 26 and 3rd egg March 30
    Chicks hatched
    1st chick April .., 2nd chick April ... and 3rd chick May ..
    None of the owlets survived!

    I was watching it live and I thought 100% that Hanna was encouraging him to branch/fledge! No hanna, not yet!!!

    Still has a lot of fluff but I don’t know how the owlets are raised. How cute, chewing the tree knot. Good luck baby. 😊

    Yes i agree with Scott's well expressed comment about branching vs fledging. Still quite small and starting to explore....

      there is no branching with eagle owls! They usually breed on the ground. This is an artificial nesting aid because they have lost their brood to the year after year. We were hoping, that they will use it!

    Hmmm. This seems more like branching to me than fledging, as the baby didn’t really fly so much as hop. It did leave the nest, and I know that a lot of folks consider that fledging however it it done. It seems that owls, like eagles and hawks, will venture out to explore branches outside of their nests before taking their first flights if the setting allows it.

      It will be a long time before it can fly. There is no branching like eagles or hawks. It is still a fledgling. They learn to fly on the ground. Now it is time to explore the ground. They do not normally breed in nests, but on the ground. Unfortunately, the chicks never survived on the ground, so they built an artificial nest and hoped they would use it. And they did!

      How wonderful that is to have a nest built on the ground Liz!!
      Amen to that brainchild idea!

    Aww Owlet & Mom playing Owl games in the nest 💞 so cute. Owlet still has much down and short plumage is it not too early for fledging ?. Hope baby will be well protected and fed by Hanna & Hugo on the ground. Best luck Owlet ❤🤞🤞🤞. Did I hear the song of the European Oriol ? 🎶😊

    At least the owlet can get in the shadow now. It was getting very hot in the nest, the temperature has been exceptionally warm lately.

    The sweet owlet was not old and ready enough for this. But for sure he was lonely and eager to take this step.
