Here's how I put magnets to slow the spool down even more on my Penn Fathom 2 40. This is not a professional solution, but it works for me - just needed a bit of help for the Centrifugal Brakes on the Fathom 40 and with a bit of help from the magnets, it did slow down quite a bit.
After testing out my first magnet arrangement, I found that it was just a bit too much so I decided to make a quick video to show everyone who might need this - anyway, hope you find this useful and of help to you or your friends. 1374657803$!$%%@)*$#)!1thneonglnsiwbttatest

Do you have a Gauss meter for the magnets to see before and after? Also, was curious what distance you got before and after? Thank you.

no, I don't have a gauss meter. some of these reels you can't cast comfortably coz they dont have brakes and won't go too far, or you get a backlash. Magnets on reels are nothing new. You can search on youtube on the casting distances made by reels like the daiwa 7ht or the penn 525. The point of this video is to make your reels very castable. They won't go as far as reels that are mono magged. These are static magnets that slow the spool down with a constant force, mono mags are designed so you can ease on the brakes when the sinker is en route. If you want greater distance, you can send your reel to Jamie at Pimp My Reel and he can make you an awesome mono mag kit. If you just want to comfortably cast your reel, you can do what I did in this video.

That works but isn't anywhere near as good as a knobby mag system where you can adjust the depth on the fly.
A better way might be to add a metal circular plate inside that magnets could stick to and then put crown screws on the side of the reel for easy access.
Then the system could be adjusted for different size leads and baits to get the best distance

Agreed Jim, but it wont be as easy or as fast as this. For me I just needed to slow the spool down a bit more, just to support the centrifugal breaking system it already has. I just needed a bit more than what the cast control can provide.

How did you get the syntriphical braking system in your reel?

Did you glue original magnets on?

bought magnets and glued hem on. :)

do the magnets have to be close to each for this to work?

    • @TheFishingKit
      @TheFishingKit  3 ปีที่แล้ว

not really, but if you put more than one (you can actually put just one big one if it fits) mount them in opposite polarities - some have a series of 4 or more magnets.

@@TheFishingKit so if i have 2 rows of magnets for example i need to have one side were the positive is facing up and the other side were the negative is facing up?

@@xxcarlosxx16 normally, you only have one row of magnets and you have mags on the bottom and mags on top. you can check to see how the setup looks like in abu garcia baitcasters :) there are some with top and bottom magment holders.

@@xxcarlosxx16 let me make something clear ok? The magnets I put in are static magnets - these just aid my casting so the spool slows down and I dont get overruns on reels that don't have braking systems (mostly used for light trolling) so it is just an aid...not really there to stop the spool but just to slow it down a bit so I could manage with my thumb.

@@TheFishingKit thank you very much. staking the magnets in reverse polarity worked like a charm!

I seriously wish I could do this with my fathom 2 15lw.

actually, fathoms are relatively easy to work on if you want to put a static mag in it.

I've tried putting different size magnets to fit under lip of the spool. They all touched the spool.

@@nealskelton1425 you would have to find the right magnet size...also, try the crank side, instead of the clicker side.

      Update.....
I did as you advised. I tried 3 magnets and then removed 1. 2 seems to be perfect. I had to clean up a bunch of Penn grease in order to get the mags to stick using a drop of super glue. In the future, should I feed the need to remove 1, I can just pop it off using a pocket knive.
Great advise. Sometimes it pays to think outside the box.

I spent months tinkering around with the Fathom 40 and custom rare earth magnets. Long story short, doesn't work because wind speed and direction and sinker and baits change.

Mine works well for me. As I mentioned in the video, I had a static magnet placed to just help me slow the spool down a bit. It is not as good as a monomag. If you want to really slow it down, you need a mono mag. Check out "Pimp my reel" on youtube. He would have an assembly for a reasonable price for this reel, and it will work really well.

14.85 seconds is slow for a penn fathom...adding magents for absolutely no reason atall, I can get the standard fathoms free spinning for over 2 minutes after some tinkering...remove them mags and get fishing with it

Ive already foshed with fsthoms for years, and i have no problem fishing them in the daytime. At night ia a different story, I need the magnet as an extra layer of prevention since i cant see when the sinker hits the water.
