Disney CEO Bob Iger gave a mea culpa for big losses incurred while launching streaming platforms like Disney+ during an investor conference appearance on Wednesday.
“As we got into the streaming business in a very, very aggressive way, we tried to tell too many stories. Basically we invested too much, way ahead of possible returns. It’s what led to streaming ending up as a $4 billion loss,” Iger told the MoffettNathanson Media, Internet & Communications Conference during a session that was webcast.
Iger addressed a falling out with his hand-picked successor, former Disney CEO Bob Chapek, whose tenure he called out for lavish and misplaced content spending. “It was clear to me that our structure was not working, because we were removing accountability from those that were basically investing the most capital was a mistake,” he argued.

Maybe because it’s the fans that keep going to see the movies, everyone complains about Disney making too many remakes but they have no problem forking over money to go see them, but then when Disney does release an original movie it bombs.

Another thing is that they’re over reliant on sequels and remakes than originals. And I’ve noticed that Disney hasn't had a successful live action movie that isn't a live action remake in a long time.
Also they sabotage every live action movie that isn't part of the brands they bought or studio they own. I mean, I'd love to see another ORIGINAL PG 13 live action franchise but they don't care.

I genuinely think Disney+ and incessant IP grabbing are the worst business decisions they've ever made. The endless need to churn out content for everything they own (and on multiple platforms) means all their resources are stretched thinner, and quality control has gone down significantly. And the sheer amount of Disney properties that get released each year, with none of them being particularly good, is leading to serious fatigue with the brand. They got too big for their own good and now they're collapsing in on themselves.

    • @Chiwowza
      @Chiwowza หลายเดือนก่อน +6

Also the whole Splash Mountain thing makes me laugh; Disney hates acknowledging that Song of The South exists and it isn't even on Disney+. It has basically no relevance to anything the company is doing now and is near impossible to market to younger generations. I get that people are sad about the ride being changed, but from a business standpoint it makes complete sense.

This kind of mindset even extends to their theme park division too sadly enough. Disney hasn't made an original, non-IP ride at a US Disney park in almost 20 years (the last being Expedition Everest in 2005). Not to mention they're still loaded with billions in debt from the moronic 20th Century Fox vanity purchase under Iger, as well as not having a response to Universal's Epic Universe, a park poised to steal Disney's market share. They're screwed unless major changes take place.

The problem is, she mostly buy it with her mom's credit card and her mom or my aunt is always having trouble with debt every month. Which is embarrasing because she's going to turn 40 soon and she still depends on her mom's credit card. The last movie that I actually saw in theaters was Into the Spidervers. After that I was like “ No other movies from anyone, especially Disney, will be this good.” But then I hear about Wish and how it was going to bring back the Disney I remembered with a new princess and a classic Disney villain and I was like “Aw sweet I can’t wait.” Then it came out, it was critically panned and I had a realization. I let my nostalgia blind me because I wanted to be taken back to a time I’m starting to realize actually wasn’t that great and the fact that a large corporation had such a tight hold on my childhood makes me kinda bummed out. It’s nice to see it slipping away though. Either way, Disney has to change or it can say goodbye to bottling up and selling people their childhoods. And god knows they are not too keen on losing money.

I hated Disney as a kid for how it force the happily ever after on all the princesees except for Mulan (I'm so 'not like other girls'😅). However, finding their classics like Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King as an adult really blew me away. Their best stories have a clear message, but it never overshadows the "wonder". The characters are allow to be very traumatized and flawed, but that's how we find them so catharthic. Even Cinderella felt strong in my eyes now because she refused to become bitter despite all the abuse.
By flattening every character to be virtuous and "correct", Disney's woke has defeat it own purpose of making the audience reflect and be part of the journey.

I have to imagine the success of Disney in the 2010's (particularly the MCU and its peers) was like the popularity of hair metal in the 1980's: the movies were often dumb, loud, over-the-top, occasionally talented and profound, and had legions of fans _and_ critics.
But by the turn of the 2020's, audiences were tired of Disney's empty spectacle and wanted something more mature and prestigious in their blockbuster movies, that was driven b a singular creator rather than brand popularity. I like to believe that the success of films like the Dune movies, Top Gun 2, Avatar 2, RRR, Everything Everywhere All at Once, Spider-Verse, and Barbenheimer put a dent in Disney's image.

@@anaalicia5029 Maybe for you. But, you have to realize that the United States is made up of more than you. To many Americans, it is definitely the woke agenda. Disney had a trans-woman princess greeting children at the Disney princess shop. Most Americans don't want this and it's reflected in the numbers.
For example, don't forget that before 1989, Disney was doing poorly and in the trash because their output sucked. BUT, Disney was not actively hated and boycotted. This time it's different and it's because of their woke agenda. A parent should be able to bring their 6-year-old daughter to Disneyland without causing confusion in the child.
Now that we have doctors advocating for the mutilation of children, do you really think most parents even want to risk being part of that conversation? Nope.

We saved soooo much money, we had Disney gift cards because we wanted to buy whatever we wanted….I’m not kidding you, we bought NOTHING 😂 there was one cool Guardians of the Galaxy illusion mug that we liked, and especially after riding their new ride we decided to get it but we could never find it again after seeing it that first day. By the end of the trip we were so desperate to spend these gift cards because they’re useless after the trip you can’t get the money off of them, so we just caved and bought a lightsaber lol we don’t even like Star Wars

My main issue with Disney is how aggregiously greedy they have become, as well as donating money to those committing genocide (people say they donated to Red Crescent too for Palestinian aid, but that just feels reductive considering they showed support for the oppressor first.) The last thing I paid for by Disney was a Disney Cruise with my mother, and you had parents spending upwards of $200+ on dresses their kids would grow out of while workers were almost begging for tips (they rightfully deserve good payment, btw). And I know, the Parks are like that too, but the blindfold really comes off when you're in a much smaller space. If that cruise was the camel's back, then the genocide support was the straw. I have nothing against those who work for Disney or want to continue being a consumer. It's just become more apparent to me as a former Disney adult that the magic is more forced and fake than it's ever been. I know this is an idealistic view, but the "fun" of Disney should exist as just that without insidious shit going on behind the scenes. I know every company has this kind of friendly persona but it would be nice to have cool things within Disney that actually do deliver an escape and don't harm others in the process. However, I do understand in a Capitalist society, this is the way of the land. Thanks for the video, I enjoy listening to your thoughts! :)

I was in Disneyland Paris in January and having a good time but kept having this nagging feeling, and I couldn't put my finger on what was wrong. Only in the third day did it hit me: what the fuck is Disney? It just buys things now, and I just realised I was in a theme park to stuff they own. I still enjoyed it, but it was just weird seeing a whole theme park trying to have it all; Mickey Mouse, Pixar, Star Wars. I think we're only days from the Simpsons or Family Guy joining the parades. I don't know, it's starting to feel like it's less for fans and more for investors.

No cause you have a point. I hate when Disney shoehorns diversity because then we (us ⚫ ppl) get hate for absolutely no reason like we're in the boardrooms 😭
I was content with Halle Bailey playing Ariel her merit (it's always "bEsT pErSoN FoR tHe jOb" unless that best person is ⚫) spoke for itself the girl can sing and she was skinny enough to fit in a rubber tail but I would've shit my pants if I found out we were getting another dark-skinned Black ORIGINAL Disney princess. Literally the only one we have is Tiana and she's 15 years old already. Now every time a BW is cast in a sci-fi or fantasy project like clockwork a barrage of hate comments will flood their socials.
Disney co-opted leftist talking points and are trying to fix sins of the past when all we want is for them to do better going forward. Lilo & stitch, princess and the frog, Brave, Mulan, Moana, Pocahontas, Emperor's New groove were all earnest attempts at diversity albeit clunky and culturally insensitive at times it still was a good and all are highly revered to this day. So yeah they be setting is BIPOC up every casting announcement I'm convinced.

You should have mentioned how Disney shut down Blue Sky studios while they were in the middle of making Nimona. I feel like Netflix picking up an original IP, where both the protagonists are queer characters nonetheless, that Disney pulled the plug on and having it be one of the most successful animated movies of last year is another great example of how Disney is losing the relevance war against studios willing to take more risks.

Another huge problem is that the overt nickeling and diming of consumers (especially in the parks) is kneecapping Disney’s future. I am like you-a “Disney adult” as in someone who really likes theme parks and their history. I love the ambiance. I love the fun food and shows. I love the vibe. But I can’t afford to take my four kids to Disneyland anymore, and when we went after it reopened it was comically expensive without so many of the amenities we used to get included. We weren’t going back even though I used to go every other year at least, because I don’t like being scammed.
My kids aren’t exactly clamoring to see Raya or Wish characters in the parks, either. The new stuff hasn’t captured their imagination the way the old stuff did for me as a kid, and the remakes fly under the radar in my house. Even though I like some of the remakes, my kids will always opt for the original Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast, so they’re not getting new excellent movies because Disney’s resources are all being poured into nostalgia films that don’t appeal to anyone at all instead of creating a new generation of creative films.
Without a course correction I think Disney will hit a wall in 5-10 years that will lead to a steep decline as childless millennials with disposable income are out of gas in the nostalgia tanks. Marketing themselves to families doesn’t make sense if most families can’t afford to visit, and the millennial demographic with disposable income won’t last forever so it’s unimaginably stupid to just shrug and keep catering to them while leaving the future consumers of their product high and dry.

The King was supposed to have a wife who was just as evil as him. So there were fans that were upset that they missed out on a Disney evil couple that could've been fun evil.
and I think the Wish star was supposed to be kind of in the vein of one of those Jack Frost Sexy Man type beings or something, so there were people that were upset about missing out on that via the concept art that was show of that along with the Evil King & Queen.

Absolutely agree! I am just so done with all the remakes and sequels. Where is the creativity? I hate the era we live in where we take a popular IP and make something that is less good than the original. I don't mind the live action stuff existing, it is like the same as the straight-to-dvd sequels... but hyped up. However we aren't receiving any new content.
I mean there is still so much untouched material in the realm of fairy tales that they haven't properly done like Red Riding Hood, Jack & the Beanstalk, Hansel & Gretel. I know these tales have lots of other movies, but it just seems strange to be that they don't have the creativity to do something with it.

There was no reason to get rid of it and it was a 100% a political reason why they changed not one but both splash mountains at the same time, the brers have not been shown at all not in the parks anymore nor in the once upon a studio short where supposedly every disney character was suppose to be shown, and their music was banned to play in the parks, this you cannot say that it wasnt driven by dumb politics.

I know you briefly brought up Ralph Breaks the Internet, but I really do think that the death of Disney started with that movie and is emblematic of everything that is wrong with them now:
    - it is an unnecessary sequel to a beloved animated movie
    - using their own properties to upsell the Disney brand
    - forced and empty social commentary meant to appeal to marginalized communities while screwing them over behind the scenes (the princesses providing surface-level feminist commentary while the movie whitens Tiana's skin and retcons Vanellope's disability-coded glitch)
    - the movie having little to no quality control or respect for the original movie it is a sequel to but expecting immediate success regardless just because it's Disney/ an IP people are already aware of
    - unfunny meta jokes/ references to past Disney movies and tropes in order to come across as "self-aware"
I will forever hold a grudge against the company for ruining whatever potential Wreck-it Ralph had as a franchise with that awful sequel.

Great video, and I just want to say I don’t think Wish was that bad. It’s a very middle ground movie, like nothing spectacular, but it wasn’t hot garbage. Disney, to me, just used to occupy this place of comfort watching, where it’s easy to watch because of its familiarity. Now I don’t really need that as I’ve gotten older and just naturally have disengaged from even my old “favorites”. I’m curious to watch that star wars Acolyte show that’s coming out cause I like some of the cast and writers.
