From a plot point of view, Hashirama needed to be so powerful because it would had taken such power to change the way the shinobi world was, someone so powerful that people would follow him but with Hashirama he was not only strong but he had a good heart, which naturally convinced shinobi to listen to him.

The dude routinely took on and defeated MS Uchihas and created some of the most overpowered jutsu in the series (flying thunder god, edo tensei, shadow clones etc). As an Edo Tensei he was able to completely destroy a divine gate that even a full powered bijuu bomb from the 10 Tails wasn’t even able to damage and was actively taking on Madara with the Rinnegan, matching him move for move until getting off screened only for Madara to remark that he was so much weaker and slower as an Edo Tensei than he was when he was alive. - Minato was so dangerous when he was alive that he was the only Shinobi in existence to have a universal “flee on sight” order. He killed well over 1000 shinobi in a second like it was nothing and fucking gg’d Tobi in like 2 moves when they fought one on one while Guy could just hold him back in order for Naruto and Kakashi to recover and fight him. The dude just casually teleported the entire 9 tails away from the village after it attacked to be able to fight it in open space and his speed was so immense that with just his body flicker alone he could move ad kill three men before anyone even registered what he was doing. He was also treated as superior by Kakashi who was of a similar level to Guy. - The Third Raikage was literally invincible... the god damn 8 Tails wasn’t even able to SCRATCH him with a direct attack and the only thing that has been demonstrated as being powerful enough to wound him in the entirety of the show is being his by his own attack made using his kekkei touta. If you can routinely solo a bijuu, mutilate it with your own attacks and have it not even be able to touch you, you’re powerful as all hell. The guy used an entire regiments of the allied shinobi forces complete with 9 Tails Sage Mode Naruto as an excuse to flex by not even using his full power and still stomping them until he got hit with his own attack - The Third Kazekage is touted as the single most powerful shinobi to ever come from the sand, after clashes with the 1 Tail he just straight up used the power of a bijuu to inspire the creation of a brand new jutsu by the way of iron sand manipulation which practically couldn’t be defended against to the point his considerably weaker edo tensei form (as weakened as Hashirama’s was during the fight with Sarutobi) was still able to solo both Deidara and Sasori (who was also using the Third Kazekage puppet at the time), beating them into a retreat and causing Akatsuki to hold back on attacking Orochimaru. Let me repeat that, the existence of a weakened version of the Third Kazekage was enough to be a deterrent to all of Akatsuki, an organisation that had the likes of Itachi, Tobi and Pain in its ranks...

i think just like the magekyou sharingan plot hole this context where it was only 60 years is severly flawed, how was it that hiruzen was a boy when hashirama and tobirama were alive, the sannin are like 50-60 in the beggining of naruto, the time frames make zero sense. its exactly why they never showed what time frame hashirama died or even how. th eonly thing they can say is natural causes.

Hashirama is my fav naruto character so i am biased but i love his sheer Natural power from simply training to his maximal abilities,not only focusing on external buffs like the Uchiha ( sharingan) or tailed beasts . The driving force behind Naruto: If you think truly deep about it Hashirama Cells, is what kept the series going. From the beginning of Naruto up until the end, Hashirama Cells, was the MVP in the plot progression and it goes something like this (p.s gonna try my best to keep it in order by oldest to most recent Hashirama Cell involvement. Things might get a little confusing. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED): Hashirama was the only Shinobi alive to be able to utilize wood style to it greatest potential. Making Hashirama Senju a borderline god in his prime and in later generations. Without Hashirama there won't be Hashirama Cells and without Hashirama Cells there won't be Wood release. Therefore nobody in the world would be able to perform wood style at all, forget mastering the nature transformation. Therefore in order to be able to utilize wood release, you would need to implant good ol' Hashirama Cells into your body to unlock wood release, but you will die if your incompatible with the godly cells. Therefore, because wood release was such a broken justu EVERYBODY wanted a piece of that action including Madara, Danzo and Orochimaru. Coincidentally in order to unlock the rinnegan you need the DNA of both Ashura's (Senju) and Indra's (Uchiha) bloodline to be infused into one body so if Madara didn't play with good ol' Hashirama Cells chances of him unlocking the rinnegan would have been ZERO. Meaning Madara wouldn't have had plans of the infinite tsukuyomi, meaning there would have been no need to recruit Obito to carry out Madara's plans for him, meaning obito would have died, resulting in no Akatsuki organization being formed and not implanting Madara's Rinnegan into Nagato, meaning that not even Jiraya would have taken Nagato in as a student because without the rinnegan, Jiraya wouldn't have believed Nagato was the “Child Of Prophecy”. BONUS- White Zetsu is made up of Hashirama Cells, thus is the only reason Obito was able to survive in the first place. (Even though he should have died, and be turned into mush but whatever.) Also the only reason, apparently, Obito was able to Spam his MS without going blind was because of the Zetsu (Hashirama) Cells implanted into him because it somehow is able to strengthen sharingan (Danzo did it too). Obito was able to take back Madara's Rinnegan from Nagato's corpse and implant it in himself was only because of, guess what, he already had Zetsu (Hashirama) Cells in his system the entire time! What a plot twist! Yamato was ONLY relevant because he was one out thousands of test subjects (Orochimaru tried to attain wood release through experimentation) that was compatible with Hashirama Cells and even though Yamato has wood release, honestly I don't think anyone can disagree but Yamato can't hold a candle to what Hashirama could do with only wood release at his disposal. I forgot to mention, but somehow wood release has the power to somehow tame tailed beast and seal them. Probably because of the Hashirama Cells at work. Thus Yamato was essential in Naruto's training in learning how to control his wind chakra nature and in creating the rasenshuriken in such a small period of time. Yep without Yamato Naruto's training would have been interrupted by Kuruma's (nine tail fox) influence, thus halting the training resulting in the justu not being ready in time to stop Kakuzu, thus because of Hashirama Cells Naruto got one his most powerful technique in his arsenal. Without Hashirama Cells Danzo would have not been able to implant Shisui's Sharingan as well as many others. Meaning (my theory) Danzo wouldn't have tried so hard to get Itachi to kill his clan because without the idea to take over Shisui's MS for himself, he wouldn't have bothered and would leave Shisui to use his mind control on the uchiha head to stop the Coup D’état. Resulting in Sasuke and Itachi to live normal lives, meaning the plot of Naruto being non-existent. The war was only able to play out because Yamato was kidnapped and Obito had taken his cells (Hashirama Cells) to then mass produce white Zetsu thus the war arc was pretty much Hashirama Cell's fault. Yamato's power to keep the nine tail's rage in check (Hashirama Cells) was the MVP in contributing to Naruto taming Kuruma and unlock Chakra mode After Naruto lost his arm in the fight against Sasuke, it was replaced by creating an entire new arm out of Hashirama Cells (yep now Naruto can have God Tier-level Wanks as well.) I'm sure that there are more plot holes that were fixed by Hashirama Cells but this list is long enough. If there are plot holes in my own answers or something I've missed let me know in the comments. Kishimoto's logic: Madara and Danzo's logic: Hashirama's reaction Just a little theory of mine, as to why Hashirama Cells was handled this way. If you feel like it makes no sense, tell me in the comments or correct me of my mistake in this theory: You see Kishimoto was creating a long running shounen by factoring as many plot twists and characters as he could. This was his mistake because, how do develop the characters (abilities and growth) while at the same time, moving the story forward? Kishimoto had to make things interesting, but had no time to develop every single character (e.g look how irrelevant the kohona 11 became in shippuden, because a billion more interesting and more relevant to the plot progression, characters came into the picture. Characters like, killer B, all the past and current kage, later revealed uchiha, all the jinchuriki, ect) So the solution to this problem is to go with favourites and as you guessed it, Uchiha, were those said favourites. By giving them a great deal of influence and abilities in the universe they were, what moved the story forward and in order to link this isolated clan to the whole universe the intermediary, Hashirama Cells, was born to link the story as best it can. So that every plot hole involving the uchiha, was dealt by having, Hashirama Cells, take over and solve anything that didn't make sense. Basically, Hashirama Cells, were Kishimoto's anchor to grounding the story so the plot isn't repetitive and doesn't fly off into the freakin' stratosphere, *cough* Bleach *cough* But that's just my theory tho'…The driving force behind Naruto:

Being Handed Itachi’s eyes did help Sasuke; Naruto always having the nine tails and mastering sage mode definitely did assist in the two becoming masters. Hashirama however, being blessed with so much makes you wonder how he developed, and mastered these Abilities rather than it just being plot. With no one else having wood release, who taught him how to master it? The 1st is the biggest plot device character around. It was like he was supposed to just be a myth and never brought into action. Hashirama almost sounds as though he can defeat Ashura and Indra. Healing with no hand signs with damn near infinite chakra sheesh. I even hate how he speaks to Madara as if he knocked Madara out. If it were a boxing match, it would be like a 12 rounder and he was able to get up off the mat on the 9 count Rocky 2 style.

Something I thought would’ve been cool to see, Have Obito Instead of Dying to kaguya, (and avoiding the kaguya shit entirely) He moves to Hashirama’s location while Naruto and Sasuke distract madara, and work together to perform RinneRebirth on Hashirama, who becomes fully revived to help fight Madara.

He knew the competitive nature of the Uchiha and how their brains work, and gave them a high position of power (police force) to help them focus their nature into good for the village, while also being respected as a part of the government (police force). But Madara Had to fuck everything up. Then Danzo perverted what Tobirama stood for.

Every other Hokage has just kept the peace, not improving on what Tobirama created. Naruto is second best Hokage because Naruto has actually done alot for Konoha in terms of infrastructure and government institutions.

For me hashirama is the greatest because he never got help. No great sanin was his teacher, no hokage was his mentor, advanced jutsus werent even developed, no toad was teaching him senjutsu. Hashirama was all skills, brute strength, self mentored and above all the real beast of the ninja world.

tysheem Hood I think the reason he kept up with kcm Minato is because they had marked each other with their Flying Raijin seals and coordinated attacks. If it was just a contest of pure speed Minato definitely wins. Tobirama even stated himself that Minato was better at Flying Raijin than he was. But Tobirama is still amazing. He could’ve probably become like Minato was with it given enough time. Tobirama created the jutsu and others took one or two and built upon them like Minato with Flying Raijin or Naruto with shadow clones, while he had to focus on honing all those techniques at once rather than just building his arsenal around one of them.
Hashirama's healing powers have limits you know so in a war against all odds like in the case with Third Raikage, he died. It's highly unlikely that Hashirama was poisoned.
If Hashirama was restored to his full self before Naruto and Sasuke received sixth paths chakra he would have still been the strongest ninja. He could have arguably taken on Madara in his sixth paths mode. If he was at 100% similar to how Madara crushed everyone when he was revived.

The dude routinely took on and defeated MS Uchihas and created some of the most overpowered jutsu in the series (flying thunder god, edo tensei, shadow clones etc). As an Edo Tensei he was able to completely destroy a divine gate that even a full powered bijuu bomb from the 10 Tails wasn’t even able to damage and was actively taking on Madara with the Rinnegan, matching him move for move until getting off screened only for Madara to remark that he was so much weaker and slower as an Edo Tensei than he was when he was alive.
- Minato was so dangerous when he was alive that he was the only Shinobi in existence to have a universal “flee on sight” order. He killed well over 1000 shinobi in a second like it was nothing and fucking gg’d Tobi in like 2 moves when they fought one on one while Guy could just hold him back in order for Naruto and Kakashi to recover and fight him. The dude just casually teleported the entire 9 tails away from the village after it attacked to be able to fight it in open space and his speed was so immense that with just his body flicker alone he could move ad kill three men before anyone even registered what he was doing. He was also treated as superior by Kakashi who was of a similar level to Guy.
- The Third Raikage was literally invincible... the god damn 8 Tails wasn’t even able to SCRATCH him with a direct attack and the only thing that has been demonstrated as being powerful enough to wound him in the entirety of the show is being his by his own attack made using his kekkei touta. If you can routinely solo a bijuu, mutilate it with your own attacks and have it not even be able to touch you, you’re powerful as all hell. The guy used an entire regiments of the allied shinobi forces complete with 9 Tails Sage Mode Naruto as an excuse to flex by not even using his full power and still stomping them until he got hit with his own attack
- The Third Kazekage is touted as the single most powerful shinobi to ever come from the sand, after clashes with the 1 Tail he just straight up used the power of a bijuu to inspire the creation of a brand new jutsu by the way of iron sand manipulation which practically couldn’t be defended against to the point his considerably weaker edo tensei form (as weakened as Hashirama’s was during the fight with Sarutobi) was still able to solo both Deidara and Sasori (who was also using the Third Kazekage puppet at the time), beating them into a retreat and causing Akatsuki to hold back on attacking Orochimaru. Let me repeat that, the existence of a weakened version of the Third Kazekage was enough to be a deterrent to all of Akatsuki, an organisation that had the likes of Itachi, Tobi and Pain in its ranks...

If you think truly deep about it Hashirama Cells, is what kept the series going. From the beginning of Naruto up until the end, Hashirama Cells, was the MVP in the plot progression and it goes something like this (p.s gonna try my best to keep it in order by oldest to most recent Hashirama Cell involvement. Things might get a little confusing. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED):
Hashirama was the only Shinobi alive to be able to utilize wood style to it greatest potential. Making Hashirama Senju a borderline god in his prime and in later generations.
Without Hashirama there won't be Hashirama Cells and without Hashirama Cells there won't be Wood release. Therefore nobody in the world would be able to perform wood style at all, forget mastering the nature transformation.
Therefore in order to be able to utilize wood release, you would need to implant good ol' Hashirama Cells into your body to unlock wood release, but you will die if your incompatible with the godly cells.
Therefore, because wood release was such a broken justu EVERYBODY wanted a piece of that action including Madara, Danzo and Orochimaru.
Coincidentally in order to unlock the rinnegan you need the DNA of both Ashura's (Senju) and Indra's (Uchiha) bloodline to be infused into one body so if Madara didn't play with good ol' Hashirama Cells chances of him unlocking the rinnegan would have been ZERO.
Meaning Madara wouldn't have had plans of the infinite tsukuyomi, meaning there would have been no need to recruit Obito to carry out Madara's plans for him, meaning obito would have died, resulting in no Akatsuki organization being formed and not implanting Madara's Rinnegan into Nagato, meaning that not even Jiraya would have taken Nagato in as a student because without the rinnegan, Jiraya wouldn't have believed Nagato was the “Child Of Prophecy”.
BONUS- White Zetsu is made up of Hashirama Cells, thus is the only reason Obito was able to survive in the first place. (Even though he should have died, and be turned into mush but whatever.) Also the only reason, apparently, Obito was able to Spam his MS without going blind was because of the Zetsu (Hashirama) Cells implanted into him because it somehow is able to strengthen sharingan (Danzo did it too).
Obito was able to take back Madara's Rinnegan from Nagato's corpse and implant it in himself was only because of, guess what, he already had Zetsu (Hashirama) Cells in his system the entire time! What a plot twist!
Yamato was ONLY relevant because he was one out thousands of test subjects (Orochimaru tried to attain wood release through experimentation) that was compatible with Hashirama Cells and even though Yamato has wood release, honestly I don't think anyone can disagree but Yamato can't hold a candle to what Hashirama could do with only wood release at his disposal.
I forgot to mention, but somehow wood release has the power to somehow tame tailed beast and seal them. Probably because of the Hashirama Cells at work.
Thus Yamato was essential in Naruto's training in learning how to control his wind chakra nature and in creating the rasenshuriken in such a small period of time. Yep without Yamato Naruto's training would have been interrupted by Kuruma's (nine tail fox) influence, thus halting the training resulting in the justu not being ready in time to stop Kakuzu, thus because of Hashirama Cells Naruto got one his most powerful technique in his arsenal.
Without Hashirama Cells Danzo would have not been able to implant Shisui's Sharingan as well as many others. Meaning (my theory) Danzo wouldn't have tried so hard to get Itachi to kill his clan because without the idea to take over Shisui's MS for himself, he wouldn't have bothered and would leave Shisui to use his mind control on the uchiha head to stop the Coup D’état. Resulting in Sasuke and Itachi to live normal lives, meaning the plot of Naruto being non-existent.
The war was only able to play out because Yamato was kidnapped and Obito had taken his cells (Hashirama Cells) to then mass produce white Zetsu thus the war arc was pretty much Hashirama Cell's fault.
Yamato's power to keep the nine tail's rage in check (Hashirama Cells) was the MVP in contributing to Naruto taming Kuruma and unlock Chakra mode
After Naruto lost his arm in the fight against Sasuke, it was replaced by creating an entire new arm out of Hashirama Cells (yep now Naruto can have God Tier-level Wanks as well.)
I'm sure that there are more plot holes that were fixed by Hashirama Cells but this list is long enough. If there are plot holes in my own answers or something I've missed let me know in the comments.

Just a little theory of mine, as to why Hashirama Cells was handled this way. If you feel like it makes no sense, tell me in the comments or correct me of my mistake in this theory:
You see Kishimoto was creating a long running shounen by factoring as many plot twists and characters as he could. This was his mistake because, how do develop the characters (abilities and growth) while at the same time, moving the story forward? Kishimoto had to make things interesting, but had no time to develop every single character (e.g look how irrelevant the kohona 11 became in shippuden, because a billion more interesting and more relevant to the plot progression, characters came into the picture. Characters like, killer B, all the past and current kage, later revealed uchiha, all the jinchuriki, ect) So the solution to this problem is to go with favourites and as you guessed it, Uchiha, were those said favourites. By giving them a great deal of influence and abilities in the universe they were, what moved the story forward and in order to link this isolated clan to the whole universe the intermediary, Hashirama Cells, was born to link the story as best it can. So that every plot hole involving the uchiha, was dealt by having, Hashirama Cells, take over and solve anything that didn't make sense. Basically, Hashirama Cells, were Kishimoto's anchor to grounding the story so the plot isn't repetitive and doesn't fly off into the freakin' stratosphere, *cough* Bleach *cough*
But that's just my theory tho'…The driving force behind Naruto:

Being Handed Itachi’s eyes did help Sasuke; Naruto always having the nine tails and mastering sage mode definitely did assist in the two becoming masters. Hashirama however, being blessed with so much makes you wonder how he developed, and mastered these Abilities rather than it just being plot. With no one else having wood release, who taught him how to master it? The 1st is the biggest plot device character around. It was like he was supposed to just be a myth and never brought into action. Hashirama almost sounds as though he can defeat Ashura and Indra. Healing with no hand signs with damn near infinite chakra sheesh. I even hate how he speaks to Madara as if he knocked Madara out. If it were a boxing match, it would be like a 12 rounder and he was able to get up off the mat on the 9 count Rocky 2 style.
With his wood style he was able to drastically change the battlefield in essence he always had a home base advantage

He knew the competitive nature of the Uchiha and how their brains work, and gave them a high position of power (police force) to help them focus their nature into good for the village, while also being respected as a part of the government (police force). But Madara Had to fuck everything up. Then Danzo perverted what Tobirama stood for.

tysheem Hood I think the reason he kept up with kcm Minato is because they had marked each other with their Flying Raijin seals and coordinated attacks. If it was just a contest of pure speed Minato definitely wins. Tobirama even stated himself that Minato was better at Flying Raijin than he was. But Tobirama is still amazing. He could’ve probably become like Minato was with it given enough time. Tobirama created the jutsu and others took one or two and built upon them like Minato with Flying Raijin or Naruto with shadow clones, while he had to focus on honing all those techniques at once rather than just building his arsenal around one of them.

If Hashirama was restored to his full self before Naruto and Sasuke received sixth paths chakra he would have still been the strongest ninja. He could have arguably taken on Madara in his sixth paths mode. If he was at 100% similar to how Madara crushed everyone when he was revived.
