Listen to Clandestino his first album, the lyrics are still relevant to this day. This dude actually speaks more than 6 languages, his life story it’s fascinating. He does a lot of activism and probably has been in every little corner of the world. I live in the middle of fucking nowhere (Neuquen, Argentina) and Manu has been more than one time near my home, doing free concerts and protesting along the working class. I always knew him as the guy of “Me gustas tu” but this quarantine I’ve discovered him and his music and I have never felt so connected to an artist before. PRÓXIMA ESTACIÓN: ESPERANZA
More than a decade back now, I was walking in a random, central neighbourhood in Athens, Greece when I head his songs coming through the square. At first, I figured someone had put their stereo on max but as I got closer to the square I realised there was a dude with a guitar singing and sounded just like him. Once I got to the square I realised that it WAS him. Heard he had a musician friend in the area he was visiting and he was just sitting in the square singing while waiting. What a legend.
Manu Chao is of Franco-Spanish origin and his style is quite indefinable. We can classify it in "world music" but it is much more than that in my opinion. He is influenced by Spanish music and reggae yes... but also by rock 'n' roll, punk, ska ... You should listen to his old band Mano Negra ... incredible ! I saw it in concert twice ... each time 3 hours to 3 and a half hours, a crazy atmosphere... and certainly the most exhausting concerts in which I participated with Rage Against The Machine :p. Manu chao is generous, committed, sincere ... a great man !
Oh man, just saw this reaction. Manu Chao was one of my greatest influences growing up. Still is to this day. The fusion of punk rock, reggae, latin, everything is so special to me.
I grew up in Mexico and this was on everyone's radar. Never thought it would be popular in America, but it seems I've met more people who dig it than people who don't. I swear it transcends all cultures.
manu is one of the best singer-songwriters with political lyrics against social inequalities, the musical style is called SKA. I would like to hear "Me llaman calle"
Great choice man👍 The song literally talks about immigrants in any country, but the great Babylon is in reference to the first world countries and how immigrants are like ghosts in the country without legal documents. You should watch the whole concert. In my opinion it’s the best live performance video of manu. It’s call tombolatour.
bezoar elfa Exactly. He is one of my all time favorites and I was starting to think everyone forgot about this wonderful music. This reaction brought back some great memories.
Manu Chao with La Mano Negra was the first rock band I ever saw live! At l'Olympia in Paris, think I was 15....epic. I'm a fan to this day! actually that era of French rock had a lot of cool bands....
Manuuuuu. They’re so fun! I was traveling through Chile some years back and I happened to miss them in concert out there. One night after all the bars had closed, this group of people with a couple guitars started strumming to Manu Chao and a bunch of us just started singing and forming our own little drunken Manu Chao concertó. Good times
I'm another that says THANK YOU for getting to this man and this song. I first saw/heard it on Austin City Limits and went immediately and bought the CD.
Thanks for having a reation to Manu Choa and thanks to everyone out there sharing his works. You should check out some videos of him just playing music with the locals. It is good to see him being out there spreading goodness.
1:42 The music of Manu Chao is classified as Ska, punk rumba, reggae and worldbeat. Manu has a huge excelente music production, mainly against inequalities in the world. He was even proposed to the Nobel Peace Prize
Manu did a cool album with two of my favorite musicians from Mali, West Africa, Amadou and Mariam. Dimanche a Bamako. Cool stuff. I would recommend Amadou and Mariam "Chantez, Chantez, Danse, Danse"
Ive seen a lot of great bands and artists live ( Dire Straits , Pink Floyd , Michael Jackson , Bruce Springsteen and many more ) But Manu Chao was the best , so much energy , so much fun . May I suggest you do " L'Hivers a la " in the live version ? You'l see what I mean by the energy .
Manu Chao was the lead singer and guitarist for La Mano Negra, a french band from the late 80s/90s. They played a combination of rock, reggae, ska, early hip-hop, arabic, latin and even french folk/traditional music, and sang in French, English, Spanish and Arabic. Deffo recommend listening to standards like "King Kong Five", "Mala Vida", "Sid'h Bibi" (the live version is truly amazing) or "Rock Island Line". A personal favourite is "Bragg Jack". Also, I know people have already "requested" The Clash, a band that combined many genres with punk-rock and had an immense influence on La Mano Negra, and I guarantee you won't regret it :)
From portugal um abraço...mix de rumba de barcelona,reagge,ska...and a litle bit of world music...celebration of union of all people in the world...frindship ,sorows ,love and peace....a litle bit of eachother👍✌
Dude that concert was very awesome you should listen the next two song from that one., Ya llegó ya llegó, lo peor de la rumba. Ya llegao ya llegao el MANU CHAO con los musicarios mata rumba
@Jamel_AKA_Jamal , Manu Chao is a French musician of Spanish descent. He sings in French, Spanish, English, Italian, Arabic, Catalan, Galician, Portuguese, Greek and occasionally in other languages. Una BESTIA!!
Hi Jamal.Manu Chao is a french artist from Paris. He user to be the lead singer of a band called Mano Negra. They play rock, ska, reggae, latino, funk..Take a hear to a song called King Kong Five. This one will Give you a vision of what their music was. Manu Chao runs a solo carrier since 15 years, travelling round the world helping as he can the poorest populations, giving shows, collecting money and make things happen like building schools.. He is an activist, and politically engaged. In some ways Manu Chao's is a french Zach de la Rocha. Both of them are not just singing, they believe on what they are telling, and they want us to wake up, free our minds and resist any kind of discrimination or liberty restriction.. As I write, I recommand to you 2 songs : Township Rebellion from RATM (studio version is the best, killer bass line, killer Morello's guitar riff, incredible flow ans lyrics from Zach, as always) and the 2nd is : Digging for Windows from Zach de la Rocha, Alone. You ll live it. Take care, One Love from Paris CYRIL
Manu Chao es muy cercano a latino america, en especial en Colombia ( Mi país), Gracias por la reacción. Manu Chao is very close to Latin America, especially in Colombia (My Country), Thanks for the reaction !
I think the lyrics were worthy of being read. He talks about mariguana saying it is ilegal but the song is about what in spanish its called 'illegal' people, (inmigrants without papers). The song is telling how hard their stories are, and claming in a way that 'ilegal' is the wrong term (that's why he keeps calling them 'clandestino' which, although more acurate and less despective than 'ilegal', it is rarely use in Spain when refering to inmigrants). 'People are not illegal, mariguana is' Use to be slogan used when people complained about that term being use when refering to people. Of course they are also complaining about mariguana being ilegal, but it its kind of secondary on the song.
Look at the Whole Concert. Fantastic! „Pinochio" is a theme from a Little Series in the 70‘. Live absolute Party Song. His songs are often political. And tell about the people and the iniquities of the world! A world musician!
The dude has a very unique style because of his cultural heritage and his musical influences. He's French but he's of Spanish descent, and his music incorporates many different influences. He was originally the lead singer of the band Mano Negra. React to their songs "Mala Vida" and "King Kong 5," I think you'll dig them. He mostly sings in Spanish, but often includes lyrics in French, English and other languages.
You should check out the live version of Mr Bobby by Manu Chao - pretty dope show! he is the one artist who i think really fuses music from different cultures.
I suggest Desaparecido, I love this song. Manu is a very charismatic and vindicating singer. HIs lyrics are usually simple, but with a lot of message in favor of inequalities. Thanks for this react

Manu chao is a stage animal. These guys play for 2 or 3 hours, always full speed ahead. An extraordinary live experience!
My high school spanish teacher was a fan of Manu Chao and we used to listen to his Esperanza album a lot in class.
I grew up in Mexico and this was on everyone's radar. Never thought it would be popular in America, but it seems I've met more people who dig it than people who don't. I swear it transcends all cultures.
Not only in USA... Here in Croatia Manu was a loudspeaker of the whole generation
