The Elms was a summer residence of Mr. & Mrs. Edward Julius Berwind. Inspired by the French cottage, the construction of the mansion began in 1899, and finished in 1991.
In 1962 The Preservation Society of Newport County acquired The Elms, and opened it's door to the public.

The Elms is the PERFECT mansion, not just for Newport, but of all the Gilded Age masterpieces. Opulent and serene, nothing over ripe or gaudy, just elegant and inviting. I so much prefer this cottage to those ponderous Vanderbilt things anyday! Beautiful tour, thanks so much for posting it!
