Witches and Faeries are also known to be shape shifters in many stories (think about the trope of a witch becoming a black cat). In the Beldam's case, she reveals herself to be a giant spider creature.
I really like your videos I havin't wached all of them but I would love if you could make a video saying what a beldam is and the ghost children and how they ment her also who or what the father is becaose he's not human he's not a beldam etheir
Around the old well in the movie, you’ll see a ring of mushrooms, also known as a fairy ring, folklore says that you’ll be forced to dance with the fairies until you go mad or die from exhaustion. I think the more relevant piece of folklore is that you run the risk of becoming invisible or trapped forever, assuming the old well is a portal to the other world as I learned in another video
Oh hell yeah it’s about time we give the beldam some attention! She’s an absolute icon and she deserves an iconic video as this one! I knew bits and pieces of the beldam origins but I learned something new today! Thanks for another great vid!
Fun fact about Coraline: it's the only book Gaiman had completed and sent to his publisher _before_ it was due...like two years before it was due. They wanted his next book to be American Gods, so even though he was behind on it and they had Coraline just waiting to be printed, they sat on it. So, if you're a book fan, you can thank Neil's publisher for the delay. It was ready before he had even finished writing American Gods, but they wanted that first, so we all had to wait for Coraline. He talks quite a bit about it in an interview that Audible included at the end of American Gods 😊
The food was what Coraline wanted most. Her parents gave her "slime" for dinner and offered mustard and ketchup wraps. It was her biggest weakness, and the Beldam wanted to exploit it.
If it helps, food was also a cause of conflict between Coraline and her father in the book. Except, instead of being a terrible cook, the parent kept cooking and serving fancy gourmet dishes when his child didn't have the palette for it yet.
The other mother in Coraline one of the scariest villains I have ever read and still haunts my subconscious . Yet, what really stuck with me was the author's quote in the beginning of the book that helps put the terrifying nature of the book into perspective-- "Fairy tales are more than true: not because they tell us that dragons exist, but because they tell us that dragons can be beaten." -- Gaiman
So Beldam from Coraline can be French. “Belle Dame” in French, which sounds very similar to Beldam, means beautiful woman. The fact that when she is trying to lure people she presents herself as a beautiful woman, then morphs as she’s trying to capture souls, she has no eyes (symbolic of her having no soul), and is relying solely on her beauty to entice her victims into trusting her has me believing that that is where the name is derived.
☝🏼☝🏼belle dame =beldam words slightly change spelling and pronunciation when translated though the years.especially to a different language.BTW..a beautiful woman(femme fatale) is often considered to have magical or unworldly powers.. AKA a witch
I also think that maybe the buttons might prevent the kids from returning home. In the movie, the other father says "So sharp you won't feel a thing." Maybe he wasn't lying. Maybe the other world's magic stops it from hurting, but if she returned home, she'd begin to bleed and feel unimaginable pain. Or she might use the buttons to seal in her magic after stealing their life (hence why every magical being she makes has buttons)
It would be a super cool movie but I like that it’s only a children’s movie. Neil originally wrote it for his fearless daughter who wanted a scary story and I really love that it’s made for the creepy kids
The book and the movie are both great. The original for as short as it is tells a very compelling story that highlights Gaiman's ability to write what makes something scary from the perspective of a child. The movie changes a few things but is a visual treat for anyone who is a fan of stop motion animation.
yes and i read an interview with gaiman in which he said that the first draft script that Henry Selick wrote was “too faithful” to the book, and that it “didn’t feel like a movie, it felt like a book transposed” and so he told Selick, who wrote a new script that changed and added things. i think he did a fantastic job turning it into a movie instead of “a book transposed”. its the only book/movie adaptation ive seen that has left me not sure which version I like more!
The thing that unsettles me about the leanan sidhe creature, as well as fairies in general, is how well the idea of someone who enchants you and then abuses you and sucks the life from you lines up with having a narcissistic or abusive lover or family member...
Feeding Coraline may also be symbolic of the other mother's intentions, feeding Coraline in the beginning can darkly symbolise the beldoms intention to feed on her by the ending.
I love that in the Swedish folklore we saw changelings (bortbytingar) as children of trolls, ogres or fairy folk (what ever you want to call them). They switched out their children in the belief that they would get a better life as humans. This was probably due to the belief that a new born baby was more susceptible to unholy things like supernatural beings
The messed up origins of Coraline was the very first video I watched from Jon Solo .. it’s been a few years now.. I appreciate this video being put out it being things around full circle for me . ❤️🥳✨

Also, there was a video I saw about Coraline When she Was given a cake The writing showed " welcome home " The 'o' in home was written in hieroglyphics Meaning she was welcome but not home...
Awesome video! From what I've seen of Neil Gaiman's work so far, I have a good respect for him and the research he did for his characters and stories. I can absolutely agree the Bedlam has fairy attributes. When I grew up, the number one rule of going into Fairyland: Don't eat or drink ANYTHING and never dance (there's actually an interesting cartoon movie called Fairies that has Jeremy Irons in it). Also, the ability to give the illusion of poisonous mushrooms, abandoned buildings, and leaves being delicious food, a cozy house, and gold coins is called glamour. Trooping fairies (except for hosts like the Unseelie Court of Scotland) are almost always much nicer than solitary fairies (except for household fairies such as the brownie). And about the cat. I think the cat could be considered a fairy, perhaps even a household fairy, since he is helpful, yet a loner.
So the Beldam is a mix between The Maleficent and the wicked witch from Hansel and Gretel, an evil fairy witch that seduces and bribes children with food and sweets just to kill them to obtain power. That is indeed a true horror movie villain in the making.
I wrote a creepypasta character last year inspired by the Beldam and Laughing Jack as I thought it would be interesting. Its called "Beldam Luna", and I wrote a short story and attempted a lullaby on her origins to tell her tale. Basically she was an ordinary girl born into a wealthy family but had the misfortune of losing her mother at an early age. Her father remarried to a wicked woman who hated her stepdaughter so much, that she pour hot wax into the poor girl's face. The daughter endure years of abuse until she snapped the day her Step-mother stated that she can't find a husband because of her facial scars, causing the daughter to gorge out one of her stepmother's eyes in retaliation. Later on, she made a deal with the devil that in exchange for her eyes, she would have the power to dish out her own justice. Thus the Beldam Luna was born. Her eyes were replaced with buttons and from that day forward, she would visit the household of children who were mistreated in anyway possible. She gaina their trust by caring for them like the parent they never had, and spies on them by giving them a doll version of herself. She does this in order to get close to the Child's abuser (whether it be a bully, an abusive parent or sibling, etc.) And when the time is right she steals the abuser's soul through their eyes, leaving behind a doll version of the victim. On rare occasions does the Beldam take the child as well, as all she cares about was dishing out her never-ending revenge against all who hurt children.
That adder stone looks like the planchet from a ouija board...or "spirit board". I watched a movie called Ouija, where a girl looked thru the crystal in a planchet to see spirits that were summoned by the board. Sounds like they have similar properties as the adder stone.
I think that the food lore is a dual issue, including the old hospitality rules combined with fae food myths. I think I'd love to see a story about the fae queens.

In the Philippines, one surefire way to get "Spirited Away", without cure, is to having eaten food offered by supernatural beings. If they "befriend" you and take you to their realm, just be careful not to eat anything especially black rice or black anything.
In the movie Spirited Away, by Studio Ghibli, has a similar food-eating magic. Not just the curse of greed on her parents, but the berry thing that Haku gave her when she started disappearing.

Jon Solo, I would suggest watching the Anime Ancient Magus Bride. It's sort of a fairy tale anime and also shows some tidbits on fairy mythology. One bring the changlings. 9:17 This part is actually kinda sad as the Changelings myth was how parents explained birth defects. Regardless of the type of defect, it all went under the umbrella of that myth as the adults would rather blame it on fairies instead of believing that something was wrong with them. Birth defects can occur for a large number of reasons, but at the time (due to obvious lack of knowledge) if something was wrong with your baby everyone blamed it on you.
@@lilygamingtheories1410 Breaking news! The beldam, a mysterious woman with long black hair and pale skin, is said to be a supernatural being who preys on children. Some people have compared her to Pennywise, the sinister and predatory clown from Stephen King's novel "It". However, it is important to note that the beldam is not a clown and is said to live in the real world and not just in the pages of a book.
Neil Gaiman is such a Genius. The whole 'Buttons for Eyes' theme reminds be of the 'Mirrors for Eyes' in Thomas Harris' Red Dragon. Absolutely Twisted and Disturbing.
I was 11 when The movie came out and my baby brother was 9, it totally traumatized him! Then when I was 17 I went into a coma. I had really bad swelling in my brain so when I was waking up I hallucinated a ton of stuff and one of those things was that my mother was not my real mother, as well as everyone and everything else around me! Seriously a mind fuck to “wake up” and think this random woman was posing as my mom and had strapped me to a bed. (I seriously had no understanding that I was awake and in a hospital room). This movie was the closest thing I could compare that experience to, that and the Pink Floyd song “Comfortably Numb”

She gaina their trust by caring for them like the parent they never had, and spies on them by giving them a doll version of herself. every kids worst nightmare coraline : -dances-
As soon as I saw the notification I instinally clicked it
9:17 This part is actually kinda sad as the Changelings myth was how parents explained birth defects.
This video is just incredible, both I must put out there both the movie & book are fantastically amazing and creepy
I still wanted to thank you for the Nordic culture you taught. All your videos are very educational and we greatly appreciate it!
Coraline really is a horror film parading as a kids movie, but it’s great
not a kid's movie
@@WARNING-1gv7ej2j it’s rated PG
@@lilygamingtheories1410 Breaking news! The beldam, a mysterious woman with long black hair and pale skin, is said to be a supernatural being who preys on children. Some people have compared her to Pennywise, the sinister and predatory clown from Stephen King's novel "It". However, it is important to note that the beldam is not a clown and is said to live in the real world and not just in the pages of a book.
I love the movie and I recently read through the book. it's a short one for younger kids but it's great. my eldest daughter loved the movie too.
Neil Gaiman is such a Genius. The whole 'Buttons for Eyes' theme reminds be of the 'Mirrors for Eyes' in Thomas Harris' Red Dragon.
Absolutely Twisted and Disturbing.
Finally! I watched videos on her before, but they never really gave a good answer! But this one dose! This channel is the best! Thank youuu~!
The sponsor is perfect! I need a new eye appointment and the glasses I have are repaired by wire and tape on the legs. I really need this, thank you.
I always thought the add stone was hidden at the bottom of the the taffy bowl, not carved out of of the taffy.
Still one of my favorite movies to this day haha dope video cheif love seeing more of the lore around it
I was 11 when The movie came out and my baby brother was 9, it totally traumatized him!
Was looking up coraline merch a few minutes ago, I'm kind of creeped out.
Watching anyways
Even as a kid I could tell if I was ever in any situation like the ones in horror movies I would die immediately.
hmmm never been referred to as a "solo cup"...I like it
I absolutely love Coraline the book and movie and in either scenario the Beldam spooked the hell out of me
I still don’t know why Coraline is a kids movie LMAO this is a legit thriller
This is one of my 7-year old son's favorite stop-motion movie. He's not even creeped out
