It should also be mentioned that 25 of the 49 probes sent to Mars never got there. They either crashed into the planet, missed the planet altogether, ending up in an unretrievable solar orbit, or something happened in mid-flight (such as a collision with debris). Space is hazardous, and I don’t expect any crewed flight to Mars in the foreseeable future.
The next step should be a return to the Moon. It’s three days away, and it’s much less risky to test the long term effects of microgravity. Most Apollo astronauts found it much easier to work in the 1/6th gravity of the lunar surface than the free-fall gravity of orbit or travel through space.
And in building a permanent station in the South Polar region of the Moon, the crew could be shielded from Solar radiation. The craters there which have the water don’t ever see the Sun. And in an emergency, Earth is always three days away.
For now, we have unmanned probes which are doing an excellent job of exploring Mars (and the rest of the Solar System).

    • @erdrickcapet3945
      @erdrickcapet3945 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

In fairness to NASA, they have a slightly better track record, 7 failures out of 34 missions. 3 of those 7 failures are from the same mission, so even though they were technically different probes, they were all part of the Mars Polar Landing mission and were launched together, operated together, etc, so maybe should be counted as 1. 2 of the failures happened in the 1960s/70s and didn't escape the atmosphere. So, 7 becomes 5, then 2 were rather old with really old technology, so more like 3 failures out of 31 missions. That's slightly less then a 10% failure rate. The high failure rate is from the Russians; 19 failures out of 27 missions, so like a slightly over 66% failure rate. But I do agree with you about the moon, that should be stop one and the next thing we do.

i am the perfect candidate for a long range mission like in the movie ‘passengers’.
one big problem is radiation. without any atmosphere to protect us, space ships cannot block all the various unseen rays.
meanwhile bone loss, gravity sickness and insanity have a role to play too.
we can’t do interstellar travel until we figure out artificial gravity. (maybe travel in spaceships filled with liquid)

    1) “When earth and mars are close together, when Mars is at perihelion and Earth is at aphelion...”
NO. That’s not how that works.
    2) “Engineers are likely to aim it in a wide orbit around the sun, and the sun’s gravity would give the spacecraft a boost known as a gravity assist...”
That is NOT a gravity assist!! Every part of that sentence is wrong.

Hello The Infographics Show, I have a question. I’m 16 year old and I’ll move into a college next year, will I have the ability to become an astronaut and join the marsian team to get to the red planet before they go without me? I’m so curious cuz they said that the mission to Mars will begin in the 2030s and it looks like that I won’t have some time to study 12 years of university to start training and so on.

They have _some_ of the isolation -- to be silent, they can only listen, and hundreds of feet down, there's not much to listen to. But ultimately they're still surrounded by people. Radiation? No. Yes, there's radiation onboard, but most of the ship is perfectly safe. Millions of miles from anyone who could even attempt to help? Nope. Health effects of microgravity? Again, negative. Park your sub on the ocean floor for 14 months, and you'll start to have an idea of the difficulty of a Mars mission, but you'll still be missing the random radiation and effects of microgravity. (and it'd still be a bit off the mark for a psychological test as well, because the people in that tube know they can always surface and get help within hours.)

Radiation = Meh, What doesn't give you radiation
Altered Gravity = I'm so lazy
Isolation and Confinement = I've been isolated for like 3 years prior to Covid
    Distance From Earth= Woooooooooooooooooo!

You've never even imagined the level of isolation of being over 100mil miles from Earth. No grocery stores. No McDonald's. No TV. No Internet. Nothing but what you bring with you. And no possible way to end that isolation. If that CD/DVD/Bluray is damaged, or drive fails, the stuff you brought with you cannot be so easily replaced.
