Gayatri is a chhanda or a method of versification consisting of predominately three lines of eight letters each.In this style we find many mantras of many deities.
Apart from the 8|8|8 Style which is predominant , Gayatri has around 10 other variants.
In Gita, Shri Krishna says that among all chhandas, He is Gayatri, thus the gayatri style of versification is considered most powerful.
Rig veda has 2456 mantras in gayatri chhanda.
A follower of any particular deity can chant His/Her Gayatri mantra 108 times daily.
The Mahanarayana Upanishad , Section One ,can be referred as it contains several gayatri mantras.
