The way Emerson's solo travels outward from the main theme & then returns near the end to resolve itself just knocks me out. He was a master at this technique.

That "big thing behind Emerson" is a vintage modular Moog synthesizer built as collaboration between Keith and Bob Moog himself. Sometime around the early 2010s Emerson sent it back to Moog for an upgrade and refurbishing instead of having it delivered back to himself he had it sent directly to a young blind Lady Young musician by the name of Rachel Flowers who is a massive Emerson Lake and Palmer fan and could play their music like nobody's business. There's a wonderful video on TH-cam of Emerson telling Rachel that he is sent the refurbished machine to her to play with before he even got it back and some absolutely incredible playing of hers covering many ELP/Emerson compositions. She is talented enough to have been a member of the band it's really worth looking up the video and perhaps reacting to it. By herself that young lady is a gift to us all. She was absolutely devastated by the deaths of Emerson and Lake and collaborated with others to do tribute videos.

Carl's drum kit was a beast too. He had it made by British Steel as I recall and the only stock steal that they had on hand was quarter inch thick and half inch thick and he thought oh what the hell and went with the thicker stuff. He didn't realize how happy it would make the drums. The bass drum alone would take two stagehands to carry it. The entire kit together was frequently mounted on top of a rotating platform and the combination text the limits of many stages and some had to be reinforced after a couple of them had collapsed from the weight. But it was a beautiful kit with the outer shell highly polished and beautifully engraved. It got to be a real pain to transport it however, and eventually it was sold off. Eventually it ended up in the hands of Ringo Starr who I believe is still the Lucky Man who still in possession of the unique drums.

The very first rock concert given at the Olympic Stadium in Montreal, built for the 1976 games, but unfortunately not finished in time, since there was not yet the retractable roof.
Imagine playing outdoors in -20 Celsius (-4 Fahrenheit), with 18 inches of snow on the ground and all that, in front of empty seats.

I saw Keith and Greg play together again a couple of years before their unfortunate deaths. Also got to Keith's Memorial Tribute Concert. Carl is still at it - a beast on the drums in his 70's. This is an EL&P recreation of the original Aaron Copland composition, and you're right John, Emerson had a great appreciation for jazz, many of his compositions have parts with an undeniable jazz flavor, he even appeared on some TV shows dedicated to jazz. In fact, one of the musicians he most admired was Oscar Peterson, the great jazz pianist. There's a video of him playing with Peterson, and he even looks a bit self-conscious playing with him.

While in Montreal, during their 1977 tour of America, the band was rehearsing in the basement of the Olympic stadium, the only space available sufficiently large to accommodate themselves and the orchestra. During a coffee break, Lake took the lift upstairs, and was struck by the spectacle of the empty stadium under a carpet of snow, and was inspired to hold a jam session in the unique environment. They organized for their equipment to be set up early the following morning, and a video recordist to document the proceedings. Despite the extreme cold, the trio, dressed in their warmest gear, completed a version of Fanfare in four separate "takes", filming each member individually, then one of the trio

This clip was made during the rehearsal period leading up to the shows at Olympic Stadium; the audio is not really them playing - it's the WORKS VOL. 1 recording. However, other than the trumpet section intro, the recording was made at a rehearsal studio in one take, recorded using a single stereo microphone. Emerson absolutely wrings out that Yamaha GX1 but Palmer and Lake are solid and creative throughout. Oh, to have been in that room.

It was Montreal's Olympic Stadium in Feb of 1977. Basically it was supposed to be a sound check before this first concert of their NA tour. But they decided to record it. The synth is the Yamaha GX-1, the first 8 note polyphonic synth.

You have no idea what you’ve come across. ELP is the forgotten group of the seventies by everyone but ELP fanatics. This piece only scratches the surface of the talent of these three guys. It’s a rabbit hole that once entered, you’ll never want to escape. I measure every other group from that era by ELP standards. Few measure up. Enjoy the journey.

Palmer on Aaron Copland: We were a little bit worried about playing him the actual rock section of it where we were ad-libbing and having some fun ... He said, 'At least you've done something different with it - that works for me. Go ahead, guys, I wish you the best of luck with it.'
Copland: Well, of course it's very flattering to have one's music adopted by so popular a group, and so good a group as Emerson, Lake & Palmer. A lot depends on what they do with what they take, and naturally since I have a copyright on such material, they're not able to take it without my permission; so that in each case, where I have given my permission, there was something that attracted me about the version that they perform, which made me think I'd like to allow them to release it ... what they do is really around the piece, you might say, rather than a literal transposition of the piece, and they're a gifted group.

Some info on the Works album The album peaked at No. 9 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 12 on the US Billboard 200 and went gold in both countries, the latter for 500,000 copies sold. The group track "Fanfare for the Common Man", Emerson's adaptation of the 1942 composition by Aaron Copland, was released as a single in May 1977. It went to No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart to become the band's highest charting single in the UK. Additional material recorded in 1976, plus songs from previous studio sessions, were released as Works Volume 2. Both albums were supported with the 1977-1978 tour, which featured the band playing with an orchestra on stage for some early shows. Didnt Copland write Halleluiah ?

Yamaha GX1 two polyphonic manuals, monophonic third manual. GX 1 also had. Pedals that Emerson did not use. The GX1 lead the way to the CS 80. The tack is off of works volume one, they are play to that. The live version , can be found on Works Tour videos is very different in the solo section. The Modular Moog was not used on the track

    • @georgegalanis9233
      @georgegalanis9233 ปีที่แล้ว

I have a feeling the brass ("trumpet") intro is generated on the modular moog. Probably set up by Emerson's roadie who used to be involved in the patching and offstage control of the moog. Emerson wrote a little about his roadie in his book "pictures of an exhibiionist" but didn't say anything about the intro and studio additions to the "fanfare" single-take track. But the additions are clearly there. The biggest giveaway is Palmer on the drum kit, the camera is never on him when the timpanis are also present. It would be a physical impossibility for Palmer to sustain the rythm part and play clean timpani parts at the same time. That would require 4 hands. But there they are. There are clearly studio additions to the track. Nevertheless one of the greatest performances by a band with such a progressive piece.

No, pretty sure the “Trumpet” is GX1. 🙂
The only time Keith had a” roadie” patching the Moog is when with The Nice he borrowed one and the owner popped up from time to time to change patches.
Keith’s Modular used with ELP had a custom hardware preset box that gave Keith Several “ patches at the lush of a button, he would occasional tweak sounds himself while playing. Over the years the Modular grew.

@@drumlinbeatpaul You're welcome. I love this song too and I still remember first seeing the video on TV in 1977, partly because of the iconic setting and also due to Emerson taking the basic framework and making this song his own. I love the GX-1 sounds Emerson used and also the solid construction of the extended blues solo. It never sounds boring - even though I've heard it 100's of times I guess
