She left it all on the stage. That is what makes this magnificent.
parents from cultural backgrounds dismiss our depression/anxiety telling us that we have a roof over our heads, food on our tables, so how dare we be depressed? what they don't realise is that saying this doesn't solve anything, rather make us more depressed. because we KNOW it could be worse but we still feel hopeless and sad. the fact that they don't pay attention to our wounds unless they're visible is the worst.
zam zam fam I don't think that was what she was trying to say. I think she is saying the girl in the poem DOES have depression but is denying it bc of all the horrible things she has experienced she doesn't wanna have one more. That saying the issue is her depression is not the whole story. Her problem is that she is a refugee. That she has to flee for survival. Yes, she has depression, but that's not what needs treated now. What needs treated is that she is in a society where she must run away. Does that make sense?
zam zam fam but if u look at their lives and how they survived to keep us protected and safe, we are way spoiled dont u think sis? My mom and dad used to dig the ground almost a whole day to find a pound (or less) of a gold, then exchange tht gold to money and buy food and water for us to live. Now all i do is go to school and sleep , cook, with equipment much devoloped like oven, fridges, sinks, tube running.... u know with lights, laundary, and we still feel tired, lazy, and sad!
Naima Ali I think maybe it's a comment on human nature. How we can have all these things and still feel depressed. Maybe?
Melissa Williams yeah... but parents who grew their kids in a war zone and didnt have depression? How did tht happen. And how is it tht those who have everything have more depression and those poors who got nothing but hapiness in their heart! Its a mystry where " happy" really comes from! May be mother nature? Since in the west we r not exposed to nature at all, all we see is tall buildings and well devoloped ereas? The secret to happiness is really unknown! Defifently not money!

This message is really powerful. As an African, Someone who's mixed race. I'm very aware that my parents have totally different experiences dealing with the world. But this poem WASN'T an attack on white privilege. She knows she suffers from depression. She knows what her mother went through to stay alive, protect her and give her a better life. Her mother doesn't understand the concept of depression. So in the end, She says they wants a new doctor and bandages for the blisters. For me, That meant She will keep "running" but this time from her depression instead of dealing with it to appease her mother.

I'm glad some people agree with me:) Art is subjective. But there was some comments implying that this was an attack on white people, which I feel is not the case at all. Actually, I feel as if no one is the "bad person" in this poem and it's no one's fault. As parents we have traumas from our childhood we want to protect our kids from not realising that they develop their own trauma. haha anyways. That's just my opinion.

The concept of this is so powerful, many don’t have the education to understand what mental health issues are, they could be experiencing them without being able to process what’s going on. Love this

Wow. She captured the disparity between mentality and mental illness so subtly. This reminds me of the wonderful Catalina Fero and her powerful statement: "Rich people go to therapy, poor people got shit to do." THis is not about social class, but about cultural identity, but there is the same rift. I also come from a culture whoe people "don't have depression" and can relate to what she's saying. I love how she doesn't make it about picking sides How her mother is as powerless as she is, how they're struggling togehter. I will definitely come to this poem many more times. I just love how it handles this topic and all its complications!

My jaw dropped when I saw this on my Recommendation timeline. I don’t think I have ever related to a poem as much... My mother is a refugee from El Salvador, fleeing the civil war in the 80’s. I’m fine, however “being sad” wasn’t even an option for me growing up. I couldn’t even say I was hungry because I “didn’t know what real hunger was.” And I never questioned her because I knew she wasn’t exaggerating. I was a privileged child compared to her upbringing however I never felt an ultimate closeness to her. She wouldn’t even talk about her past life there with me. I’ve never seen this discussed anywhere and presumed I was the only one. Thank you for this
Child of another immigrant here, and a child of a survivor of a war torn life. I wonder if I'll ever really know the people I've known my whole life

In the somali community, mental health is an enigma that is best left not talked about because it's a concept that is not easy to understand and wallahi, this poem touched me so much, because this was my thoughts for the longest time.

The crowd was too deaf with their luxury to comprehend the magnitude of what she just spoke. This my life. Refugee, Studying Psych, dream to one day be a part of my people solution and not the problem. This is our life. Dreaming that one day we will be a part of something bigger than ourselves.

I love this channel so much! As a 13 year old who writes poetry myself, all of the beautiful creators out their inspire me. In addition, you guys are almost close to 1 million subscribers! Its amazing to see how well the channel had grown, and hopefully poetry will claim a more significant role in our society!

This poem was amazing, and god do I feel it so much. I'm glad she didn't end up cursing her mother for forcing that she doesn't have depression because she has already given her everything. I really hope the best for her. I hope you guys don't think the mother as a villiain here for not trying to understand her own daughter. She has experienced a lot herself as well, and the daughter knows this fully well. Note how she described her mother with that line about the doc saying she can't protect her this time. They are both clearly troubled. Stay strong.

There is a great need for more patience and understanding these days,not everyone is strong alike and therefore we should be patient with each other.
This reminds me of the American General George Patton who slapped two soldiers for what he believed was cowardice on their part.

I relate so much, too much. I don't want to deal with this disease because I don't want to face the stigma that's associated in the African community. My mother is very kind and open, but I still feel like she may question the authenticity of my problem. Also, I don't want to fight her and the disease, so it's easier to pretend it doesn't exist at all.
Even if depression is making me emotionless whilst eating me alive.

This hit me like a truck tbh! Cuz I was depressed af one day and I didn’t eat and was crying all day and at night my parents come into my room and they’re like “what the hell is wrong with you?” So I told them that I had depression because it was too much for me to handle and that I needed to see a therapist and to that my father goes “do you even know what depression is? You’re giving us depression by acting this way” and I realised how dumb I was lol I knew they’d never understand! what was I thinking when I told them about seeing a therapist

Bish pls I’m actually doing better now, and I’m doing a major in psychology. Never really learned how to ask for help afterwards tho cuz I’d seen how that went when I actually asked for it. So I’d decided imma help others once I become a psychologist :)

One of my daughters was so "privileged" that she suffered from clinical depression (this is a disease not just a prolonged sulk) so badly that she ended up committing suicide. I see the point of this "poem" but think it is also sadly lacking in sensitivity...

condolences, I am sorry for your loss, no parent deserves to bury their child. But this POEM has nothing to do with you. Not everything is about white people. You took this poem out of context.

That hit me hard because no one wants that to happen, and it's ironic because the 1st generation would make that emidiate link when they realise that the younger generation are depressed and its horrifying just to imagine...
