    The best mechanic on TH-cam. Literally.

    I ended up taking my actuator off and cutting the shaft in the middle to take out about a quarter inch of length and then tapped both sides to 1/4-20 so that I could rejoin them with a union and nuts on either side to lock it all down. I was then able to adjust the length of the shaft to shorten it up and keep just a little tension on the waste gate which solved my P0299 error and has been going strong for a year now.

    Enjoyed the clear explanation. Funny thing is I had an 07 BMW N54 with the same wastegate flapper issues on both turbos. Now years later just bought a 2.0 tfsi and had that exact clip laying around from when I was experimenting with the BMW. On that car I ended up removing the turbos and installing new bushings/flapper in the turbo where the arms go in. Thanks for the info!

    Should I be able to see the waste gate linkage move at all with the car stopped, with engine off, then on, then revved? We have the P0299 but I’d like to better understand the conditions needed to activate the waste gate linkage. I was unable to see any movement during the test we did. I also couldn’t hear the “turbo whine” when the engine was revved. Maybe it’s just really quiet?

    What's the easiest way to get the wastegate clip on? Does the downpipe/cat need to be separated??

  • @msilverm79
    @msilverm79 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Where can you buy that clip? can you put it on a bad wastegate without taking the turbo off?

    • @NaptownTuner
      @NaptownTuner  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I get them from eBay yes it will help a lot on a bad wastegate but the proper way is new turbo with the clip. The makeshift bending / welded some people do.. I’ve seen that cause overboost with binding so I wouldn’t take that risk

    Dear specislist! wastegste solenoid is normally open and boost air is normally all the time connected to the wastegate diaphragm. Under hard acceleration it is closed briefly.

    thanks for the video. how would you separate this issue from the diverted valve? i’m being told i could just replace the diverted valve and the turbo is still good.

    I’ve just bought a 2011 Q5 2.0 TFSI and it has this waste gate rattle. I had a local garage look at it and have advised me that there is already a clip installed. Does this mean that the turbo is on its way out or is on borrowed time?

    I noticed on the newer IHI turbos (is12,is20, is38) they seem to have addressed that actuator arm as the new ones are heavily braced and reinforced in the place where that clip goes! They seem to last a little longer too. Time will tell.

    • @NaptownTuner
      @NaptownTuner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, I doubt it, unless maybe the turbo wheel is locked or clogged. the linkage is hard to move by hand. I would think you should have some other engine codes or something else wrong

    It's a shame that this is such a common problem... too much heat or are these turbos a bit too small (to handle the heat)?

    • @NaptownTuner
      @NaptownTuner  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Audi or nobody I can think of ever had problems with this before, it was a poor part by their suppliers ihi in this situation, probably a big company if it’s the same people that make heavy equipment, just didn’t supply good bushings in this linkage of this turbo, everything else with the turbo seems good

    You've never seen a problem with the diverter valve on a tfsi ? It's probably one of the top 3 issues with that engine lol. The diaphragm splits and causes it to loose boost pressure. Very very common problem. More common than a loose exhaust wastegate

    • @NaptownTuner
      @NaptownTuner  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not on 2009+

    • @AdammP
      @AdammP 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@NaptownTuner depends on the revision of dv, some might have the piston type rev d which is poor and doesn't hold boost anyway but will never fail, the diaphragm ones are pretty common imho
