    This video would have been very helpful about 2 years ago. I had installed Malware bytes and to my surprise, I could not switch back to Defender, even after removing Malware bytes. Imagine my surprise when I discovered Defender had been removed from my system somehow. All that was left were registry entries for it. I was greatly unsuccessful at finding a way to reinstall Defender without doing a fresh OS install. This went on for months and I had resigned myself to starting from scratch. Then, at the beginning of the week I had put aside to go through the hell of doing it, I got an alert from Microsoft that an update was ready to install. I carefully clicked install now and waited. After several minutes and a restart or two, Defender was back!! I am still thankful for your video.

      @Finvaara ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@ardeof It stopped working reliably, and repairing it got more and more difficult each time I had to reinstall it. Eventually I had to reinstall Windows just to be able to remove it at all. I stopped using them at that point, and then later they were purchased by a malware company, so I'm not going near them.

    Thank you for making a video about this, Mr Britec. Just a note for anyone who is following these steps provided in the video and description:
    On my machine at least, the way the 2nd command is written in the description does not work. It needs a dash "-" added to "AllUsers" [like this "-AllUsers"] and the dash before "DisableDevelopmentMode" is not properly attached, it needs to be attached: "-DisableDevelopmentMode". After fixing the dashes, it began its processes, but ignored them completely before that point.
    Also, just to point out, there are two other commands in the 2nd Command area of the description that are not implemented in the video [they are "Reset Windows Store Certification" and "Get-AppxPackage Microsoft.SecHealthUI -AllUsers | Reset-AppxPackage". Are they necessary to run as well?

    I've had Defender delete hundreds of files and folders on ALL of my hard drives (usually six) without any notification that could not be recovered, so I had to exclude entire drives to protect my system. its strange that issues like this appear when its "only" 2 years left of support on a windows version. Not to be that guy but it seems like they get a little bit lazy and forget important bug fixes when its close to the systems "death" ..
    Left the windows aka microsoft ecobubble 1 year ago and life have been alot more relaxed after, no more suprices or strange bugs or issues. Everything simply works.
    If i want to see or experience what i left i can boot up my dual boot windows and something get installed behind my back within minutes and its no warning or notice about it.. I try and avoid it though since its a headache to remove the suspicious program or files that was installed.
    My current windows planning when using it is to 1: boot it up 2: use it 3: (when finished) check for installed junk that was installed behind my back 4: Remove the installed junk for 30-60 minutes 5: if clean and restored, turn off the system. If not clean and still junk installed repeat step 3-5 for another 30-60 minutes..
    So i can use windows and estimate the time required but when it comes to turn windows off is always a questionmark, i never know how much work i have to do before i can turn it off. At times it have been 1-2 hours before i can turn it off due to that microsoft themself makes the junkware almost impossible to remove.

    I pay for a subscription for Total AV and I've never had any of the issues that seem to plague other users and I'm even using Windows 11-have been since inception. Of course, I'm an IT tech for a publicly held company here in the states and I maintain my machines and avoid dodgy sites and the only things I torrent are movies. Honestly, I wouldn't care so much if Defender wasn't there. It's improved over the years but I don't think it's that robust of a solution-certainly not enterprise grade.

    • @jTheDigitalDoctor
      @jTheDigitalDoctor ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Britec09 They all are snake oil to a point in that they offer "features" that no one will ever use. However, I find most paid options to be more feature rich and robust solutions than any built in antimalware program. It does a good job of analyzing new downloaded .exe's for malicious code and uploads suspicious files to the cloud for analysis-something I believe that Defender does not and cannot do. The one issue I had with it was it kept flagging my Monero Wallet as malware ( so I assume some type of heurstics is present along with standard signature detection) I believe Defender relies solely on signatures-an inherent weakness of the program if I am correct. I had to set exclusions for Total AV and the issue was resolved. Most people are not very bright and easily led-like sheep and their degree of computer literacy is abysmal at best-a scary thing considering the ubiquity of the devices. Most people should stick with Defender as they do not possess either the will or mental acuity to configure even the most basic of software. Hell, half of my clients I'm surprised when they're able to turn the computer on.

    Oh god!!!! Why would anyone want Windows Defender? It is horrible. Its mostly a Advertising platform. Companies pay for their products to be part of the Defender profile. Also anyone who uses Virus software is most likely not skilled enough to NOT need it.

    Feature Update to Windows 10, version 22H2
    The next version of Windows is available with new features and security improvements. When you're ready for the update, select "Download and install".
    Hi Brian, talking about updates. I've had this 'invite' sitting now for a few weeks in my 'windows updates'. Knowing how you say, 'don't jump into every 'feature invite' from MS unless it's 'security related' .. you see I do listen to your advise!
    Can you please advise on this one, could it be related to your 'Defender' issue maybe?

    Can this be done for Microsoft edge as well.
    Microsoft edge doesn't open one file was deleted by Malwarebytes I allowed access to delete it, thought that it won't affect edge and windows update will fix it but nothing happened after windows update and now edge doesn't open anyone while everything else is fine no problems but is there a way to get edge back without having to do reinstall windows.
    Any suggestions Brian.

    Windows Defender is useless. I did Deskside Support for awhile. The LAN was hit repeatedly by virus outbreaks with major damage, it was at a City Hall. It was a McCaffey site. We removed McCaffey, installed the free Malwarebytes and removed the viruses. McCaffey couldn't. Then, since it was a McCaffey site, we removed Malwarebytes and re-installed McCaffey.

    Windows defender gone? Lucky you. Windows defender has been an absolute A-hole and I tried everything to get rid of it.
    Absolute resource hog on a low end laptop which never goes online.
    I actually think I'd prefer to have a virus on the laptop... it cannot possibly run any slower.
    Best solution I found was a completely de-loused version of Windows 10 call tiny ten. All thr $hit removed and windows 10 is actually usable on an old laptop.

  • @thomasstambaugh5181

    Good riddance. Why would I want to restore this official Microsoft malware?
    The premium version of Malware Bytes is way better than MS Defender, and Defender only interferes with the proper operation of MWB.
