I was born, raised and bred in West Central Fla. I'm in my 70's now and my elementary school (6th grade) graduation trip was to Silver Springs. I remembered it vividly. The glass bottom boats, the ride down river with monkeys perched in the trees. Also came the story of Llyod Bridges and Sea Hunt. Ross Allen had a sideshow there as well. The whole class had a swell time, and a good time was had by all. Thanks for the memories that this film had brought me, and for posting it to this channel.
I can relate. We also went to Silver Springs (6th grade elementary school ). I remember when I-75 was being built in Tampa and Busch Gardens didn’t have rides. Parents loved to go and get a glass of free beer. Lowry Park with Fairyland… So much is gone now.
I actually enjoyed those corny old roadside attractions more than I do the big theme parks. They were a testament to the creativity of those who built them. There were no long lines.
My daughter got married at the Cypress Gardens gazebo in 1994 and held her reception at their indoor venue. I’m so glad Legoland saved that part of the Gardens!
I really hope our state lawmakers preserve what is left of old Florida. I was born here and grown up here but I was born in 2002, I learned what was old Florida and now I want to visit everything that was old Florida before its gone forever. I really wish some of these places are still here today for the new Generation to see
Florida native here and I really miss a lot of the old Florida. I remember all of this. I'm old I remember having to use actual tickets for rides at Disney. And tickets for the turnpike!
I had a great uncle owned a barber shop in.Tampa and used to cut babe ruths hair and go scuba diving in wicki wachi before it became an attraction. Every where water was like glass and even downtown tampa river had dolphins swimming and the brick streets had cable cars 5 cent....orange trees growing all over town. Paradise. I was 11 i lived on Sanabel Island Florida was beautiful then...
It’s August 2, 2024. My family and I lived in Philadelphia but my grandfather retired in 1970 and moved to Pembroke Pines in West Hollywood Florida. I was 8 at the time. He lived there until 1979 and moved back to Philadelphia because he wanted to be with family. I visited him once or twice a year with my parents and recall how fascinating Florida was. I’m 62 now and moved to Melbourne Florida two summers ago. I HATE IT! This is NOT the Florida I remember. I’m hoping I can afford to move back to the suburbs of Philadelphia for the same reasons my grandfather did; I want to live closer to my family and friends.
This is the Florida that I would love to visit. My friends grandparents who lived in Florida for many years said that there two Florida’s. Pre Disney and post Disney. It’s so overcrowded today.
I used to drive downtown Ft Lauderdale on Andrew Street and get a home cooked breskfast for 75 cent....when hyw1was only 2 lanes. Beautiful and wonderful times 1970 only a little traffic at that time
Stuckey’s. Back in the fifties this is where you stopped for pecan pralines and ice water. Most cars didn’t have air conditioning so a stop for a cold drink of water was a necessity. And ice for your Scotch Cooler.
Y dad grew up there in the 40/ 50 Miami I lived with grandparents 69/70 remember pirates world when my mom passed away was going thru old pictures and ran across Pirates world pictures thanks
Grew up in Dania and Hollywood, used to see the commercials for Pirates World, never got to go when it was open but went in at night as teenagers, spooky😱
Pirate Jungle was a favorite with my family!!! Memories hahaha 🤣 wonderful Life Time ago.... We all wore the same T-shirts lol so we wouldn't get lost hahaha Thank you kindly for jogging my brain.
It's a shame Cypress Gardens has closed and sold out to Legoland. Would still like to go just to show my children some of the remnant areas that were not paved over.
I loved Florida back then I'm a native and the state is way to commercial now, lost all of its appeal and our history and monuments now its just a bunch of fill dirt and concrete yall ruined my state Thanks alot
Yes I totally agree with you, it used to have character to it, now it's cookie cutter homes, shopping plazas and over congestion. What a shame it truly was a paradise at one time 🤔
Yeah, we’re Florida children as my parents moved here to open Martin Meritta. So technically I’m a native but a migrant just the same but it’s a damn shame to see how growth has overcome around here! More than ever, it needs to slow down
Wonderful video about early times of Florida it doesn't seem possible but it did happen 😮 , I remember all to well about Marineland and Disney world at the year Disney World was built. I remember Silver Springs in Ocala Fl., Daytona Beach and the horse racing 🐎 that used to be where the Daytona Speedway is now ,they also had the dog races there , I remember St, Augustine and the Spanish Fort /Castle 🏰 , other parts I had vactions at were Tampa , Bush Gardens and Panama city beach.
Back in the 1960s I asked my dad what he knew about Florida. He said: ''Cheapo Carny roadside tourist traps called Parrot Jungle and Monkey Dump, son.Strictly for morons''
Wait ... hold up a minute..WE HAD A PARK WITH FREE ROAMING LIONS?! Well that sounds like a horrifying idea LOL ..next up, swim with the alligators at GatorLand !! Gosh I love my wild weird and wonderful state !
Cypress gardens is famous its Water Skiing Shows, known as the “Water Ski Capital of the World”. Now Legoland, waterskiing is still featured, and Winter Haven still hoses Waterskiing Competitions… (oops… Part 3 covers this!)😂😂
Florida where wacky uncle Danny could make fortune a with a parrot zoo Same guy couldnt get a loan on a pinto back in NYC that's why old school Florida was the best
It was the end of an era when Disney went in. Many thought it was going to be a boon to their businesses. They changed the interstate systems to accommodate all the traffic from Disney...the latest and greatest everyone had to see...and many of these old places got put out of business. The days of the car vacation on all the old Highways to all the old attractions was all but gone at that point, or started their decline, never to recover. TALK ABOUT THE Racism that was taking place in these times.. born in 1936? how did she view blacks because in the thirties and they were very prevalent in florida since god made the earth... (alllll throughout the south and america period) and how those remains belong to the indigenous americans that "verazanno, columbus, and marco polo" saw when they arrived and said looked like Ethiopians... even though they were original Americans with dark hue in the millions.... the conquerer took it all with the help of the indigenous and made their own narrative like they do all over. bless

Cypress Gardens was the most beautiful place you could imagine.
My parents went to Cypress Gardens on their honeymoon in 1960
I always wanted to go as a kid.

Here are a few ideas....tarpon springs.... where they dive for sea sponges, or Yubor city ,Cuban village, they make hand made cigars...
Born here in 1962. So many more people now. I wish I were an an adult here in 1953, *the year automotive A/C became available!*
Old Florida was awesome! Now it’s just malls, apartment buildings, and tourist traps
Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.

I miss my childhood growing up in orlando. 😊
Silver Springs, Ocala is not on the St. John's River 10:07 which is about 40 miles east. It is located on the Silver River.
And what beautiful river it is!
And is now a Florida State Park…
It think it means that's how they got there from the ocean because there weren't roads

That brontosaurus auto repair building is still there and still an auto repair!

You’re lucky to find a roadside fruit & vegetable stand nowadays. 😢

I've been to them in the 60s and earlier 70s loved river country at Disney now defunct
Been traveling to FL since the 60's .Moved to Fl in the 80"s .Florida today doesnt resemble anything that I remember about it
It's a shame Cypress Gardens has closed and sold out to Legoland. Would still like to go just to show my children some of the remnant areas that were not paved over.
I've heard that the original gardens are still intact
