Actually Tom wrote both the Portuguese and English lyrics, and changed some of the lyrics in the English version to better suit the language and region
This has become my favorite rendition of this song. The fun you've infused into my memory of it explodes when I dance with another to any rendition. Thank you and be safe.
it's very nice visually translation. I had no clue about portuguese then, now I understand about this song. it's about ordinary things become something special through love by two. which is my understanding.
The power behind this song , with all it brings , so simple but reaches levels deep within the SOUL , from the joy to the PAIN of LIFE , but how with all that HAPPENS to us as well as every form of LIFE here , what we LIVE is PRICELESS and maybe if we looked at each as Priceless we would cause less Harm , show more respect for each other as well as the PLANET , we were never a COLOR but rather BEINGS with so much BEAUTY to SHARE , as I write this my eyes fill with tears , Humanity needs to GROW UP , the only POLITICS that matter are the Politics of LOVE , Imagine THAT
A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone It's a sliver of glass, it is life, it's the sun It is night, it is death, it's a trap, it's a gun The oak when it blooms, a fox in the brush A knot in the wood, the song of a thrush The wood of the wind, a cliff, a fall A scratch, a lump, it is nothing at all It's the wind blowing free, it's the end of the slope It's a beam it's a void, it's a hunch, it's a hope And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the end of the strain The joy in your heart The foot, the ground, the flesh and the bone The beat of the road, a slingshot's stone A fish, a flash, a silvery glow A fight, a bet the fange of a bow The bed of the well, the end of the line The dismay in the face, it's a loss, it's a find A spear, a spike, a point, a nail A drip, a drop, the end of the tale A truckload of bricks in the soft morning light The sound of a shot in the dead of the night A mile, a must, a thrust, a bump, It's a girl, it's a rhyme, it's a cold, it's the mumps The plan of the house, the body in bed And the car that got stuck, it's the mud, it's the mud A float, a drift, a flight, a wing A hawk, a quail, the promise of spring And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the promise of life, it's the joy in your heart A stick, a stone, it's the end of the road It's the rest of a stump, it's a little alone A snake, a stick, it is John, it is Joe It's a thorn in your hand and a cut in your toe A point, a grain, a bee, a bite A blink, a buzzard, a sudden stroke of night A pin, a needle, a sting a pain A snail, a riddle, a wasp, a stain A pass in the mountains, a horse and a mule In the distance the shelves rode three shadows of blue And the river talks of the waters of March It's the promise of life in your heart A stick, a stone, the end of the road The rest of a stump, a lonesome road A sliver of glass, a life, the sun A knife, a death, the end of the run And the river bank talks of the waters of March It's the end of all strain, it's the joy in your heart
Wonderful rendition! I always loved the song but I have to say that their 2 voices together resonate somehow making them sound better than they do individually.
I am an American who lived in Rio when this song landed #1 in ‘74 I think? My favorite song of all time. Reminds me of my mom. Anyway I am very close to a friend of mine who’s Brazilian and a singer and who lives out here in the US. I said she should do a version in English and out it on TH-cam a couple months back. I showed her your video and she said no I don’t need to they encompassed exactly what Jobim would’ve wanted. Cheers to that!!!
I had never heard the English version. The lyrics are pretty pretty, if that's not too redundant. In Portuguese it goes something like this: "It's the March rains, closing the summer, it's a promise of life in your heart." Because it rains in parts of Brazil in March, end of summer, and Tom Jobim thought it was poetic, even with the yearly floods and landslides. ;) Thanks for introducing me to this version in your absolutely poetic interpretation.
This is still my favorite English cover of this song. Something about the melody of this song, in all versions, just has me emotional in a good way. Love this song so much
It's March once again and I must hear this song! You guys did such a wonderful job! (I know, I'm repeating myself, but that bears repeating) You bring joy to my heart!
Tom Jobim escreveu a letra em inglês. Não é uma tradução literal, mas uma adaptação. Mas não é uma adaptação pesada, só fez em alguns momentos, o resto é tradução.
No matter where i look for good music, I can't describe enough how unique and amazing Nataly's voice is. I blindly picked this version and it sounds amazingly well composed and executed. The second I heard her voice I was like, oh I know her!
This has long been one of my very favorite songs ever - both the original Portugese, also the English "translation" - but this cute video is the first to capture the 'tone' in the visual element. Well done!
Such simplicity, I suppose that's Aguas de Março real meaning, the smallest things in life, together, make the big picture. Enjoyable version. Congrats!
Just "discovered" you folks yesterday and after watching loads of great videos I kept thinking, "geeze, I wish they'd do something from Brazil" - and here we are. Thanks so much. Just beautiful.
+Josh Fletcher I think you're the first one to catch it (and write about it)!!! We were surprised by how that worked out - totally unplanned. We found those chickens, got a bit of footage, and then Nataly realized...a riddle!
I am really dense. Is the riddle the fact it is ambiguous footage of a chicken running. Like a why is it a chicken running? Haha. I am not the brightest person around.
This just gets better and better each time I watch this video. So well done. Captures the spirit of Tom Jobim, and his poetry to the joy of Spring. Obrigado!
I watched and listened this many times (addiction probably) but still I notice word-scene pairs that I did not acknowledge before. You are adorable. I hope more people see this. :)
Beautiful, Nataly :) My dad and I, we're your fans from Brasil! We love Bossa Nova, we love this music! We love Pomplamoose and we love you and your voice!
Wow! This is gorgeous. The voices are as simple as the lyrics. Águas de março (waters of March) has always been on my top list. I love the soft bossa Nova moving as much as I love the sound and the poetry. Well done to you, guys.
Esta foi a m elhor apresentacao desta linda musica que ja assusti , parabens gente ,sao.muito.talentosos fiquei muito fa de voces, abracos .rf.Porto Alegre Rio grande do Sul Brasil.
I’ve never heard an English version of this that does justice to the poetry but also the playfulness of the Tom and Elis original. Well done.

@@Ambidextroid Huh, didn't know that. Interesting.
