I'm really confused. I understand he felt the need to stop reviewing retro games due to how TH-cam has changed, but why upload a 1min vid talking about a pen? Why not just review a few retro stuff like the new recent Analogue consoles??

I say this knowing he has deleted criticism of his channel in the past, and I hope he doesn't delete this... my GUESS (I have no proof), is that he got sick of there not being a huge audience for retro gaming of his era, hence part of the lack of growth, in conjunction with just giving up because he likely wasn't making money. At one point Mark expanded to a few other channels and one of them was still one of my favorite channels, CGRUndertow. Still so sad Derek is gone. I wouldn't even necessarily have a huge problem with a change of focus of his channel if he still made quality material, which he did before. It seems to me that Mark is just now into comics and the pens used to draw them and making lazy videos about them which SOME people may like, but is ultimately way less accessable of a subject to most people than even really old retro games, making it a failure for not just making money, but entertaining even a small audience. it seems now that this channel is completely for himself, like home videos. CGR was one of my favorite channels even though I am younger than Mark and didn't grow up with the games he did, I still loved the videos he made. But now? It's just bsad, because it's a husk of a channel that it once was. Then again, those are just guesses, and the reasons behind why he does what he does is ultimately only known by him. I definitely miss his old channel and CGRundertow tho. CGR what is a monolith, a mainstay, and probably the oldest gaming review channel and existence and it was heartbreaking to see it die only really just recently, seemingly because Mark just got sick of it and gave up.

@@lovelorn88nick What changes though? I'm subscribed to retro gaming channels, they have an audience, and make money, since they don't get demonetized. It's the safer route for making money on TH-cam in this day and age. look at the views of his old videos, they eclipse this.
My guess is he was just done with the retro reviews period, probably just lost interest in the topic.

It's kinda sad that this guy gave it all up and that he fucked up his content. He was the no.1 guy i would go to for reviews on stuff. I watched him when i was 13 when i would learn about 'the dreamcast', and the 'neogeo pocket', consoles i never heard of before. He was the trusted source! The best opinion!! The best review guy!!!! He made these older consoles look cool and interesting, and worth buying. He added more style and interest to the games and consoles he reviewed. He did great videos and sorry if you'll get mad at me for this but i do appreciate him for that for what he brought to us those years ago. I even donated a game for his colleague CGRundertow to review and he did a video and i was planning to donate to CGR as well. But yeah, it all went south. He absolutely shouldn't have changed up his content but it's his own fault. Least we still have LGR, he's now taken this guy's place although LGR mainly just does computers but still he's just as good. Game sack is another amazing alternative to CGR.

I've been a fan for many years now, but I just can't stand seeing these zero effort, 1 minute videos on comics and pens anymore. Who reviews pens? Who wants to see pen reviews? He used to pride himself on being the oldest game reviewer online, and even though his reviews weren't much they were humorous, got views, and there was a fanbase for his stuff. I think people would still be fine if he just re-reviewed games he had already reviewed and barely talked. This is 10x worse than what that would be. He could literally re-review games he already reviewed with zero effort put into them and they would get way more views than these videos.

CGR Undertow ended in 2015. It wasn't generating enough money so Mark forced Derek to shut it down

Derek was one of the best game reviewers on TH-cam. I wish he continue doing it himself. Mark has just self-destructed and on top of destroying his slightly above-average reviews, he shut down one of the best reviewers on TH-cam. Depressing. You could see how sad Derek was too when it came to an end.

These became my go-to pens for a while. Only issue I had with them was that the ink tended to dry to more of a slate grey than a rich black. I wonder if that might have been down to the cheap marker pads I was using at the time, though.
