    We had nothing. Millions of people located on a tiny island. Bordered by 2 aggressive and gigantic neighbours. Survival was a big issue. There were nobody to protect us. Indonesia bullied us frequently. We fought really hard to be who we are today. Not only did we survive but we became strong and respected.
    It is true that we became a rather unhappy nation. However, that is a sacrifice that had to be made to protect ourself, to build the foundation for future generations to pursue happiness.
    Most of our accomplishment would not have possible without mr lee. It is true that he destroys his opposition with questionable methods. He controls the media. He installed his relatives and close friends to powerful positions and in turn pay them very well to secure their loyalty. However, all of this have to be done to make singapore the country it is today. Every organisation requires a powerful leadership to do well. I owe so much of what I have to his strong leadership. I am thankful he is our leader.

    He evidently does not claim that “people are not supposed to be equal” (as the report claims). What he does claim is that a human being is an unequal creature and will always be unequal. I think he is right. Human beings SHOULD be equal but for multiple factors they are not and will never be. To think human beings are equal is to turn a blind eye to the reality.

    I cannot comment on Mr Lee's political role in Singapore, everything I know is second hand and I have no direct experience of Singapore myself. I would, never the less, like to say how much I appreciate Mr Lee. Over the past few days, I have found myself listening to recordings of the late Mr Lee discussing, expounding and sometimes declaiming on a variety of subjects. I find that his grasp of issues, economic and social, and the language he uses to expound them, to be vigerous and honest, something I would welcome in politicians in the UK but which are, alas, sadly lacking.
    One gets the impression that his abiltiy to express himself on quite difficult and sometimes highly contentious issues was not merely a question of style but of something inhernt to the clarity of his thinking. In my own, quiet insignificant view, Mr Lee was a leader of immense stature. Singapore was lucky to have him, and I can quite understand their sadness at his passing. Mr Lee, a man of immense integrity and ability, has left a powerful impression with many people, far beyond the borders of Singapore, including myself.

      seung-woo Hong Exactly. This is what so many Western Leaders and people fail to understand. Democracy is not perfect, it leads to a division of unity in the country. A house divided against itself cannot stand, as Abraham Lincoln said. This division of unity leads to large NGOs and Corporations exploiting and dividing the country, making it weak.
      I too in Singapore am seeing this happen. Every year the opposition is getting more votes and they have horrible socialist policies! I am scared that if they even get elected once they will use up our reserves and doom the country. We are so small that we cannot afford to screw up even once.
      I wish the best of luck to South Korea. Since it is now a full fledged democracy, make your vote count.

Classical liberalism has only been seen to work thus far in predominantly-historically white countries, as well as some East Asian countries like Japan, Hong Kong (not a country, I know), etc. I think LKY made the best of the situation that Singapore was in: a small island city-state with a heterogenous population, with many groups chafing against each other and not all having the same cultural-political inclinations.

How did first, a jewish David Marshall and then an Indian J.B.J win in a majority Chinese Singapore. Race has never really been a big factor in Singapore or any country. Also, I am not a classical Liberal. I am a socialist. Also, Lee Kuan Yew created a massive wealth inequality where the Prime Minister gets a banker's salary and everyone else has to somehow make do. There are quite a few people who have their opinions about LKY
    But none of you are qualified to say a single word. The only people who are qualified, are people who have taken a poor region with limited resources, and tried, over the period of a few decades, to build it into a properous city/country. Whether you succeeded or failed, only then are you a peer of LKY, and then you can voice an opinion with some weight.
    In fact, I doubt any of you have even taken leadership of the local youth club or football team. If you are to scared to take a down and out local team, and build it into a top tier team, you shouldn't even think about offering any opinion about someone who has built a nation.
    He's not perfect, but what he achieved is nothing short of amazing, and beyond the little people here hiding behind their keyboards

      Keyboard warriors only sicken me. This man deserves more than just my respect, I owe everything to him. For a country with no natural resources and a country which was once poorer than many African countries, we are doing more than good, now we have first class medical facilities, housing, accommodation, internet speed, reliable infrastructure, latest technology and so many people aren't appreciative at all...

      i love and respect lky. but i HAVE to disagree with your comment here.
      criticism DOES NOT have to come from an 'equal' for it to be constructive. why? because criticism is an important form of feedback mechanism meant to provide INPUTS on the good and bad of something (e.g. a policy). and whoever is affected by this policy (say person A) will have a personal interest in providing feedback to make sure the policy is sound - so that person A will not be ADVERSELY affected by the policy. THAT is the purpose of criticism. that the 'source' of the feedback (e.g. person A) is not an intellectual/career 'equal' to the policymaker is NOT a reason why that policy cannot be criticised by person A.
      otherwise, going by your logic, NO ONE other than goh chok tong (in singapore) can criticise lee hsien loong's policies, because goh chok tong is the only other person alive who's been a country's prime minister.
      The simplest analogy is the family context. A child's criticism of his parents' parenting should NOT be discredited simply because the child 'is still a child and does not know anything'. the child's criticism should STILL be taken into account, and then the parent can judge whether or not the criticism is sound. but the two matters - the 'credentials' of the critic and the merits of the criticism - are SEPARATE and should not be mixed up.
      let me draw another analogy. say person B is someone who cheated on his wife. he then finds out that his 18 year old son also cheated on his girlfriend. he then criticises his son for cheating on his gf. is person B's criticism invalid or wrong because he himself is a cheater? NO. his criticism is sound! just because the 'source' of the criticism is unworthy does not IN ITSELF defeat the merits of the criticism altogether!
      so pls rethink your comment.

    • @no1narutofanzz
      @no1narutofanzz 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      so for instance, some of the most famous criticisms of lee kuan yew - his intolerance of media freedom and political opposition, his views on eugenics (i.e. his belief that the smart and capable should breed together and more, while the less smart and less capable should breed less if at all), his support for (absurdly) high pay for ministers, and his indifference to public opinion (he believes a leader should not care about public opinion and simply do what he believes is right) - the repercussions of all of this are still felt today.
      of course i'm not saying ALL of these criticisms are right. but are the criticisms invalid simply because the makers of these criticisms are the common people? think about it.

    • @1336-s4y
      @1336-s4y 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      no1narutofanzz I disagree with many of his policies also especially high pay for minister, absolutely reviled. no1narutofanzz people like you are really funny, spewing out 2 strawman arguments you probably pride yourself on spending perhaps an hour thinking up of, with one of them of debatable outcome even, which you already deemed and dictated to be favourable to the point youre trying to prove.
      so when youre older, or have seeked help from someone older, reread what youve commented and think of a better argument to build your ego online on. here, i'll help you start:
      obviously when you take what GICKing said ultra literally, youll be feeling real correct. but everyone who has unfortunately taken time to read your comment (myself included) is wondering why you pit your examples of acts against one which is on the level of 'developing a nation from virtually scratch'. as you attempt to enlighten us, also read up on the meaning of 'strawman argument'.
      thanks, xoxo

  • @bobbyt1318
    @bobbyt1318 9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I will preface my comment by expressing my respect for LKY, who, at the time of this comment is in hospital on a respirator. The man, his style of governance, the unprecedented economic growth and development he presided over, etc. will continue to be examined and written about long into the future.
    While Lee Kuan Yew's detractors will cite his role in undermining democracy in Singapore by snuffing out political dissent and his support for draconian laws (based on a non-romanticized, Pavlovian outlook of his fellow man) as the basis for their criticisms. Supporters will point out that Lee Kuan Yew presided over a period of unprecedented economic growth, social stability (no easy feat in a nation as ethically and religiously diverse as Singapore), and ultimately dynamically transformed Singapore into an economic powerhouse.
    With that said, at 1:20, the journalist asks Lee (essentially) why he doubts the ability of Singapore's educated populace to make rational, intelligent judgments if exposed to different/competing ideas, Mr. Lee boldly replies that his many years of governing Singaporeans tells him so; that Singaporeans lack the savvy and/or intellectual astuteness to contend with competing ideas and make a rational choice is the unavoidable implication. In fact, he states that his own opinion is founded upon his long experience as PM of Singapore; since the Western journalist lacks comparable experience, his criticism of Singapore's press freedoms, insinuated via his question, is based on his failure to understand the unique nature of Singapore and it's people.
    Yet experience is not necessarily a prerequisite for knowledge, and secondly, LKY is justifying the denial of a free-press because his years of experience has lead him to conclude that Singaporeans are just incapable of contending with competing ideas and then making a rational judgement....So basically,
    Journalist: Why don't you allow intelligent Singaporeans a free-press? They're smart, they can handle competing ideas and different points of view in the media.
    LKY: No, you're wrong, they are surprisingly naive and easily confused. That may sound harsh and perhaps even anti-democratic to your Western ears, but you have no experience governing and building a diverse, yet cohesive nation, whereas I have been its PM for 30 years -- trust me, a free-press and exposure to a diversity of ideas would only serve to confuse the people and potentially destabilize Singapore. Come talk to me after you have guided a third-world nation lacking abundant natural resources to a developed, first-world economic power!
    Whether you see him as an impassioned, pragmatist leader, a keen geo-political thinker, or a wealth-creating authoritarian, whose larger than life presence will be missed in his nation, like the absence of a strict father with exasperatingly high expectations is felt in his home, Lee Kuan Yew is one of a kind. .

  • @XaphiaraRayne
    @XaphiaraRayne 10 ปีที่แล้ว +39

    The reason why Singapore has been strong is through authoritarianism. Some people can't grasp that democracy doesn't work everywhere, nor do the countries that have it somehow miraculously become great.
    Democracy and freedom are the ideologies of inefficient people and nations who are scared of tyranny. They would rather a government that didn't push them so that they can do as little as they can, than a government that pushes them to be the best they can be.
    China is existing proof that democracy will inevitably lose. Singapore with democracy, hah, it will be just another hole like Malaysia around it.

    I'm Singaporean in my mid-20s currently doing my postgrad at a top London university. Having been in London for more than half a year, I really appreciate what LKY has done for Singapore. Singapore wouldn't be what it is today without Mr Lee. On many fronts, Singapore is already ahead of our old colonial master, Great Britain.
    Singaporeans who complain about Singapore should instead be thankful for what Singapore is today. Being fortunate to have lived in many major cities in the world i.e. Beijing, Barcelona, Vancouver and now London, I can say without any hesitation that people that complain about Singapore and LKY, don't know what it is like to be poor.
    I would like to end off by saying that those Singaporeans who don't like how Singapore is and is being run should, in most instance happens anyway, migrate to another country which you think the grass is greener. The true patriotic Singaporeans (the 3rd and 4th generations) will continue to build on Mr Lee's legacy to make this great city-state a better home for our future generations. I'm standing up for Singapore, will you?

      A Singaporean in their mid 20s (even more so, 4 years ago) being "fortunate to have lived in many major cities in the world" would clearly have to be from a more affluent background than the average Singaporean. You have no idea what it is like to be an 'average' or even a poor Singaporean.

Pure capitalism with absolute economic freedom excludes democracy because monopolies take all wealth and power and rule politicians through money like puppets to lobby their interest. And if politicians represent interests of few who are wealthy and not the many who are the people, it's not a democracy, it's a plutocracy.

    Hi Mr Lee,
    I am very worried about the future of Singapore when you have left us! As far as today, I have not seen any leaders that can be like you or near! Hope that you can last forever to lead Singapore! Without an iron fist leader, Singapore will goes nowhere! Singapore Prophet Jo.

      Suspicious Milk for me, russian empire would be better, than american empire. But the best thing, i think, is multipolar world

      Dude, I'm from Singapore. I love LKY and all, but, Putin isn't that bad.

      Anonymous Stilton no one even says he's bad. But there's a lot of problems in Russia he could have solved already if he was a little better. I know what I'm talking about, since I myself am russian and I'm living in Russia

    I'd rather remember Mr Lee as he was in healthy times, makes me happier to imagine he's still here with us. Thank you so much for sharing this with us to, just to hear his voice and laughing, "Ha ha!" comforts me.
