  • Still trying to chase down the cause of the rudder cable noise in the station 8 pulleys. And we terminate some wires...

I vote for bearings in the pulley. Great vid..

Well, never say never, but I really don’t think your pulley noise is related to the u-brackets being loose. It seems like something is binding/releasing in the motion of the cables. I would start at the rudder and move forward trying to isolate the problem. If you pull on both cables by hand with good force and pull the rudder side to side with the cables in your hands, do you feel the vibration? Not sure if you can get your hands in the tail cone to move the cables behind the pulleys though so this test may be tricky. If that is smooth, then I would do the same pulling in both cables by hand, but this time in front of the pulleys to see if the pulleys are the source of the vibration. I would keep moving forward to the rudders until the vibration starts pulling by hand until at the rudder pedal attach points. That should help you location the source of the issue. It may be in the rudder pedals or their pivot points. Tensioned cables are good at transmitting vibration so binding/releasing anywhere in the system will get transferred throughout the system by the cables.

Tony.....What year production was your kit please?..Mine was about June 2018...I hadnt heard anything about this rudder return mod.

Mark, mine is a June ‘20 kit. I hadn’t heard of the mod until recently either.

I see you’re using DT series Deutsch connectors. I ordered some DTM series thinking the kit would use mainly smaller lower amperage connectors. Do you recommend the DT instead?

No, the DT are what I was able to get at the time and thought it also gives a pretty good margin on amperage. It did get DTM for the stick grips and trim servo.

The rudder cable tension could be the cause.

Do you have a part number for the rudder mod? I just checked the RANS web site and see no reference to this anywhere. What problem does it solve?

Part number is RFK54. $169 plus shipping.
Looks to me that it removes some spongyness in the pedals. With the rudder cable at 17.5 lbs, when you push on both pedals (and it doesn’t take much) you get slack in the forward return cable. I think this tightens that up. Also adds the cover for the cables.

@@s-21project92 How did you learn about it? I’ve seen nothing from RANS.

Another builder mentioned it to me. I hadn’t seen anything on it either.
