I loved this interview so much that it made me realize that its okay that my journey with kathak wasnt so straightforward. I started learning Kathak from Devaniya almost 7 years back and since I was in college and had just started working, I gave up after a year of learning from them as I could not be very consistent with my classes and Riyaz. Also I had an ankle injury and despite my couch potato lifestyle, whatever I learnt from Devaniya struck with me and my love for kathak as an artform kept growing. I got my first ghungroo from Jiyasa mam who prayed and blessed that I'll continue my practice of Kathak for the entire lifetime and look I am back learning with her and her team! Hearing mam speak of her journey made me realize that I am proud of my journey too. My parents especially my mom could never understand why I was so obsessed with Kathak when I could learn other artforms like Bharatanatyam or Odissi. Kathak bols, music and as ma'am mentioned is so different from the classical carnatic music I grew up with. Even if I can sing Hindustani music, the raga and bols of Kathak is so different. It needs a different training! Even getting a decent ghungroo is so difficult 😢 At one point, I broke my ghungroo and made my own by using my crocheting skills and weaved my own ghungroo with 50 bells each so that it can be less disturbing to my mom when I practice. Dancing in our apartments with 50bells ghungroo is still noisy! After a gap, I restarted my kathak journey in 2022 and learnt for 2 years online until I decided to get back to offline classes. Although I'm starting from basics again, this whole journey is so worth it. Like Mam said I met so many like minded people in the class and I know now why people love offline dance classes ❤
I'm making my mom watch this interview so she understands how intricate an artform Kathak is and there is more to it than just chakkars, fast footwork and swift hand movements. Its so soft, endearing and there's so many tales about Radha, Krishna and even show Shiva tandav using kathak. There's a Mughal influence yes but we should not forget kathak was started in temples so the Hindu influence of telling mythical stories through dance is still there.
Even as an audience, I always made sure to go to every show that Devaniya puts up because the thought and execution of such shows is next level. Someday, I wish I can be a part of such a show which has so much love, dedication and commitment put behind it. Until then I'm happy being a blue eyed Rasika and a devoted student who adores this artform ❤
